Aistear’s Four Themes That Are Represented In Montessori Method Research Paper Sample College Essay

Identify how Aistear’s four themes – Well Being; Identity and Belonging; Communication; and Exploring and Thinking – are represented in the pedagogical approaches of Montessori and HighScope. The aim of this essay is to show how Aistear’s four themes – Well Being; Identity and Belonging; Communication; and Exploring and Thinking – are represented in the Montessori and HighScope method. One may dispute, in order to show how these themes are represented within these methods, one needs to investigate these methods individually (Aistear, HighScope and Montessori).

By investigating these methods at first, one may find where the aistear themes are existing within these methods and then one can link how they correspond. Thus providing confidence and knowledge in any childcare setting. “A worker’s knowledge of childcare development is one of the main contributory factors to a high quality service across all types of childcare facility” (DLRCCC, 2012, 30/10/2012). “Aistear is the curriculum framework for children from birth to six years” (jaggo, 2012, 30/10/2012). Aistear can be used in a range of settings, including children’s own homes, childminding settings, creches, playgroups, pre-schools, naionrai, and infant classes in primary and special schools” (NCCA, 2009, 30/10/2012). After investigation, it is clear that Aistear’s main function is to provide each child from 0 – 6 years with the same learning and growing opportunities all based within a happy and safe environment (NCCA, 2008; Quality Childcare, 2012; Early Childhood Ireland, 2012).

The importance of Aistear cannot be denied, Aistear is the Irish word for journey which is quite apt as the early years education stage aims to prepare children for their journey through life. “The aim of Aistear is to help every child to grow and develop as a competent and confident learner” (Early Childhood Ireland, 2012, 30/10/2012). “Aistear uses four themes that connect and overlap with each other to outline childrens learning and development” (Cavan County Childcare Committee, 2012, 30/10/2012). These four themes are, Well being, Identity and Belonging, Exploring and Thinking, and Communicating.

Each of these themes are devised in a way to allow children develop holistically. “Aistear is designed to work with the great variety of curriculum materials currently in use in early childhood settings (NCCA, 2012, 30/10/2012). “Aistear has the potential to make a significant contribution to children’s early learning and development” (NCCA, 2012, 30/10/2012). “HighScope is a quality approach to early childhood care and education which has been shaped and developed by research and practice over a forty year period” (Early Childhood Ireland, 2012, 30/10/2012). The central belief of the HighScope approach is that children construct their own learning by doing and being actively involved in working with materials, people and ideas” (ECI, 2012, 30/10/2012). Children develop self-confidence, initiative, creativity and problem-solving skills, they learn about social relationships, the world about them, maths, science and technology, reasoning and language, finally, they develop positive attitudes to self, others and to future learning (ECI, 2012).

The HighScope curriculum fits in very well with what Aistear is asking as the HighScope curriculum encourages all of Aistear’s themes. Well Being, by developing meaningful relationships with children and allowing them to express their feelings. Identity and Belonging, by promoting each child’s uniqueness, by sharing control with the children and by providing an environment where they can find things for themselves. Communicating, by asking children what they plan to do and reviewing what they have done, and by talking about problems to resolve them together.

Exploring and Thinking, by providing a wide range of materials that children can choose to use in whatever way they desire, by embracing nature at outside time, by providing opportunities for mathematics and science, language and literacy, music and movement (Woodland Park Preschool, 2012, 30/10/2012). “Montessori education is based on the understanding that education begins at birth and is a natural process which develops spontaneously (ECI, 2012, 30/10/2012). ”Respect for the child is the core principle of the Montessori Method of Education” (ECI, 2012, 30/10/2012). The Montessori curriculum comprises of five subject areas, Practical life, Sensorial, Language, Maths and Culture” (Playmates Montessori School, 2012, 30/10/2012). “The Montessori curriculum allows children preparing for primary to develop their full potential, building their leadership skills and confidence, establishing them as valued and respected members of their community” (Montessori Matters, 2012, 30/10/2012). “As a framework Aistear is very well suited to Montessori settings as it places importance on following the stages of development of each individual child” (Montessori Matters, 2012, 30/10/2012).

Aistear’s themes can very easily be implemented with a Montessori approach. Well Being, children will be physically strong, as healthy and fit as they can be, they will be creative and spiritual with a positive outlook on learning and life (Montessori Alliance, 2012, 30/10/2012). Communication, by the use of non-verbal communication skills, language, children will broaden their understanding of the world by making sense of experiences through language and express themselves creatively and imaginatively (Montessori Alliance, 2012, 30/10/2012).

Identity and Belonging, through encouraging active listening skills, circle time, grace and courtesy exercises and allowing free choice of work and activities (Montessori Alliance, 2012, 30/10/2012). Exploring and Thinking, by allowing freedom of choice, circle time, changing learning opportunities frequently, allowing all areas of the Montessori Approach to Education contribute to child’s development of a sense of time, shape, space and place and by using real objects and real world situations to contribute to child’s understanding of concepts (Montessori Alliance, 2012, 30/10/2012).

Research shows that, “young people born in poverty experience fewer emotional problems and felony arrests if they attended a preschool programme that focused on child initiated learning activities rather than scripted academic instruction” (Schweinhart & Weikhart, 1997, 30/10/2012). “The first six years of a child’s life are vital for their development as they absorb all things around them. It is during these first six years that all patterns for their future thought and behaviour are firmly established” (Montessori Matters, 2012, 30/10/2012).

We can see how important it is that Aistear be implemented, be it through the Montessori or HighScope approach within an Early Years Education setting to allow each child to develop holistically thus giving them the best foundations possible on which to continue to flourish throughout their lives. “Empowering children through early education could allow them to voice their fears and equip them with a knowledge of their rights” (Gunning, 2010, 30/1/2012). Aistear, Montessori nd HighScope all aim to nurture the love of learning, encourage respect for others and above all, ensure that children experience a warm, positive environment where they feel safe and at ease (Nourrice, 2012, 30/10/2012). It is clear from international research that high quality childcare can have many long term benefits for children and their families. “Children who have attended high quality pre-school services are likely to perform better in school and have less chance of leaving early” (DLRCC, 2012, 30/10/2012).

Stevie Wonder did not let his disability stop his success in life. Blind sense infancy, as a result of receiving too much oxygen in the incubator as a premature baby, Stevie showed an early gift for music. He overcame many obstacles to still become successful in his music career. He always found a way to preach and guild threw his music and affects the lives around him. Stevie recorded more than thirty top ten hits and was awarded with two Grammy awards, which are the most by any male solo artist.

Stevie showed his blindness disability could not overcome his dreams. Stevie had a very early development of music. First, with a church choir in Detroit, where he and his family had moved to when he was four years old, He developed his love through music with many instruments including the harmonica, piano, and drums, He learned to play the harmonica, piano and drums by age nine and by the time he was ten, his singing and other musical skills were known throughout his neighborhood.

When the family moved to Detroit, impressed adults made his talents known to the owners of Motown Records, who gave him a recording contract when he was age twelve. He was just 11 years old when he was discovered by Ronnie White of the Motown band, the Miracles. An audition followed with Motown founder, Berry Gordy Jr. , who didn’t hesitate to sign the young musician to a record deal. In 1962, the newly renamed Little Stevie Wonder, working with a Motown songwriter, released his debut album, Little Stevie Wonder the Twelve Year Old Genius.

The record, which included the hit “Fingertips”, was an immediate hit. It is one of my mother’s favorite songs. But rather than rest on his pre-successful people the hard working Wonder, who would go on to study classical piano, pushed to improve his musicianship and songwriting capabilities. Beginning in 1967, he began writing more of his own material. In 1968, he recorded an album of instrumental soul/jazz tracks, mostly harmonica solos. The album was called Eivets Rednow, which is “Stevie Wonder” spelled backwards. The album failed to get much attention.

Reaching his twenty-first birthday on May 13, 1971, he allowed his Motown contract to expire. In 1970, Wonder co-wrote, and played numerous instruments on the hit “It’s a Shame” for fellow Motown act The Spinners. His contribution was meant to be a showcase of his talent and thus a weapon in his ongoing negotiations with Gordy about creative autonomy. (Stevie Wonder) Wonder independently recorded two albums, which he used as a bargaining tool while negotiating with Motown. Eventually the label agreed to his demands for full creative control and the rights to his own songs.

The 120-page contract was a precedent at Motown and gave Wonder a much higher royalty rate. Wonder returned to Motown in March 1972 with “Music of My Mind”. Unlike most previous albums on Motown, which usually consisted of a collection of singles, and covers, “Music of My Mind” was a full-length artistic statement with songs flowing together thematically. Wonder’s lyrics dealt with social, political, and mystical themes as well as standard romantic ones, while musically Wonder began exploring overdubbing and recording most of the instrumental parts himself.

Music of My Mind marked the beginning of a long collaboration. (Lodder, Stevie) After such a concentrated and sustained level of creativity, Wonder stopped recording for three years. The albums Wonder released during this period were very influential on the music world. The 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guide said they “pioneered stylistic approaches that helped to determine the shape of pop music for the next decade” Rolling Stone magazine’s 2003 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time included four of the five albums, with three in the top 90.

The 1980s saw Wonder scoring his biggest hits and reaching an unprecedented level of fame evidenced by increased album sales, charity participation, political impact, and television appearances. “Hotter than July” became Wonder’s first platinum-selling single album. (Wonder Stevie) Wonder has recorded more than thirty U. S. top ten hits and won twenty-two Grammy Awards (the most ever won by a solo artist) as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also won an Academy Award for Best Song and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. He as also been awarded the Polar Music Prize. American music magazine Rolling Stone named him the ninth greatest singer of all time. In June 2009, he became the fourth artist to receive the Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award. Stevie Wonder was voted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends online Hall of Fame in 2005. He has ten U. S. number-one hits on the pop charts as well as twenty R&B number one hits, and album sales totaling more than 100 million units. Wonder has recorded several critically acclaimed albums and hit singles, and writes and produces songs for many of his label mates and outside artists as well.

Wonder plays the piano, synthesizer, harmonica, congas, drums, bass guitar, bongos, organ, melodica, and clavinet. In his childhood, he was best known for his harmonica work, but today he is better known for his keyboard skills and vocal ability. Stevie Wonder was the first Motown artist and second African American musician to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song. (Wonder Stevie) Wonder’s songs are renowned for being quite difficult to sing. He has a very developed sense of harmony and uses many extended chords utilizing extensions such as ninths, elevenths, thirteenths, etc. n his compositions. Many of his melodies make abrupt, unpredictable changes. Many of his vocal melodies are also melismatic, meaning that a syllable is sung over several notes. Some of his best known and most frequently covered songs are played in keys which are more often found in jazz than in pop and rock. For example, “Superstition”, “Higher Ground” and “I Wish” are in the key of E flat minor, and feature distinctive riffs in the E flat minor pentatonic scale (i. e. largely on the black notes of the keyboard).

Wonder played a large role in bringing synthesizers to the forefront of popular music. He developed many new textures and sounds never heard before. They may not have good eyesight like you and me, but they are not daunted; instead they struggled to move ahead and ventured into business to be on par with normal persons. Their determination and perseverance paid off and today they are standing proud with the success. (Stevie Wonder) Stevie Wonder has been making music and impacting lives for more than four decades.

His life has impacted the history of one of the most remarkable periods of American music culture. But Stevie Wonder long ago crossed over from pop icon to a leader deeply committed to making a social impact in both America’s communities and around the world. He secured a place in U. S. History with his successful drive to make a difference. “We Are the World” fundraiser for hunger is working with American Express to lead the “Charge against Hunger” by raising more than $150 million to feed nearly six million hungry Americans yearly.

Songwriter, singer, producer, poet, musician, and performer throughout his career, this pop star is impossible to categorize. But one thing is certain, Stevie Wonder is a legendary artist. The Greatest Discovery

There can be no doubt that the twentieth century is one of the most remarkable in human history for its previously unparalleled rate of scientific discoveries. In fact, there were so many new gadgets invented and discoveries made in the last century that it’s difficult to write the list down. However, I think I can say ten innovations or technologies that have had the greatest influence on humanity—both positively and the negatively. First of all, I want to remember penicillin: this drug (eventually group of drugs) was discovered in 1928, it opened the door to the discovery of antibiotics.

Penicillin remains the most widely used antibiotic, despite the fact that many diseases it was once used to treat have now become resistant to it. Nevertheless, this discovery had a far reaching impact in the medical world. It’s difficult to imagine our world today without computers too. Today, of course, they are everywhere and we have become so dependent upon them that many people almost feel naked without one. For some, they even provide the very means of maintaining a livelihood: we use them to keep track of our finances, write books, design logos and sell real estate.

Plus, they are rapidly replacing the stereo and television in their ability to entertain us with music, movies, and games. Also today, we will hardly find a home without a television set. Watching TV is a favorite leisure activity for most of us. In addition, they are a such inventions as: nuclear power, the personal computer, the airplane, the automobile, roketry, the submarine, antibiotics, television, the Internet, radio. These inventions have changed the face of the world and the way we live. It is would be very hard for us lives, for example, without computer, the Internet, the microwave, the automobile and so on.
