Analysis Of Individual Political Cartoon: “Josep” University Essay Example

Political cartoons are directed towards either praising a governmental regime or mocking it. In the film “Josep,” the cartoonist has used different approaches to portray the France government regime during the civil war in 1939. Aurel, the scriptwriter in the film, has used other elements like; characters, text, analogy, symbolism, irony, and colors.

The story opens with Spanish citizens fleeing the dictatorial government to move to France. Aurel brings his point in the cartoon by introducing the film with a small story concerning the main thesis statement of the comic that will be depicted in the movie. He also teaches Josep, who is an illustrator in the cartoon. Josep is one of the refugees who later finds himself making friends with a soldier from the French side, although he lives in the concentration camps designed to hold the over populous refugees. Josep is seen holding a photo of his fiancée, whom he hopes will join him soon. The author also portrays the character of the French soldiers as cruel and brutal towards the Spanish refugees in the camp (Aurel, min 45)

The author also uses analogy statements to ensure that the viewers get more interested in viewing the movie. He achieves this by using the illustrator to explain concepts that are not familiar to the viewers. He is also keen on choosing his contexts words to avoid repetition and maintain a clear and unique storyline that catches the viewer’s attention. Josep also encounters challenging situations that he must face and deal with throughout the film. Analogy and metaphors have worked together hand in hand to establish significant positive impacts for the cartoon to flourish.

Aurel has used a black and white background in some of the scenes in the cartoon. This color enables the viewers to know that its setting is during the colonial period. This feature also allows the reader to differentiate between (Aurel, min 5). The background gives the livelihood of the characters involved in the plot. Although the primary background color is black and white, the author also uses colored scenes as a means of beautification and mainly to show how the flourished lives of the French soldiers.

The author has employed a unique artistic style to persuade the viewer’s thoughts. This fantastic technique involves the use of irony. Ironically, Bartoli and Serge get along well, whereas Bartoli is a refugee and Serge a soldier. Serge even offers Bartoli a lifeline bond that helps Josep get anchored in the process. When the time had passed, an elderly Lopez Serge recounts all the memories to his grandson (Aurel, min 45).

In conclusion, the author uses analogy, symbolism, and irony as the main critical delivery techniques in making the film. In the political cartoon “Josep,” the viewers are introduced and well taken to France refugee camps, defining most of the characters present in the film. However, other issues have also stood out in the film, such as color and language use. Language use shows the correct choice of words by the author to focus on bringing out the full image of the film.

Analysis Of Sociology Of 1984 Movie Sample College Essay

Sociology focuses on investigating the overview formation and structure of various organizations, social unions, and societies and how people come together within such contexts. It involves social revolution, social way of life, social reasons and results of the way human characters. According to the movie directed by Michael Radford in 1984, sociology is viewed in the perception that both the future and the past are under the control of one person. Similarly, both the past and the present are controlled by one person. False and unrealistic information (propaganda) is part of human sociology as portrayed by the inner part of the movie. The movie is worth congratulating for its pretty and good job of giving a true reflection of the application of propaganda and having power and authority over the people. Sociology determines much of human dignity and knowledge, whereby we willingly give up our rights for skilled scientific administration (Porczyński, 2021). One may wonder whether science may solve the human dilemma by substituting obedience for self-knowledge, which has always been an elusive and difficult search. Having full knowledge about science fiction as the critical hostility between science and fiction gives many scenarios, effects and how sociology is truly reflected in our daily lives concerning the movie.

To begin with, sociology majorly investigates how the social world affects our way of thinking, feeling and acting. Humans can think and have the capacity to act as their nature. However, sometimes this may not be the case. Sometimes human requires guidance in their various social duties. Therefore, panoptic, whereby the concept of disciplinary is brought to life in the manner of specifying observation point of tower located within a geographical area of prisons, is introduced. The architecture established enables the guards to secretly watch those engaged in their various activities without noticing being watched. In the movie, the panopticon was used metaphorically by commanders in tracing the surveillance habits of disciplinarians through the use of a large screen in front of the workplace (Porczyński, 2021). The concept of the panopticon in sociology boosts the keeping of inmates to team up together in every which they are engaged. Hence it plays a key role in sociology.

Secondly, working in groups, one of the areas in sociology, ensures team and achievement of a given targeted goal of the jobs we see in the movie are monotonous. It enables people to engage in the same jobs according to their area of specialization for higher quality results. However, this is not the case in a movie directed by Michael Radford. Ironically, there are no single non-standard jobs completely for the inmate. In the movie, all the inmates are engaged in monotonous common jobs, except Charrington’s job. The case of Charrington is quite different since he is allowed to own a thrift shop and exempted from putting like others blue overalls did but instead puts a suit. The shop, however, belongs to one of the police officers. The situation, however, makes other inmates feel like they are looked down upon and treated inhumanly by exposing them to harder monotonic jobs, unlike Charrington. In this situation, sociology is not embraced since there is a lack of treatment of the inmates in the labor division.

Sociology and post-industrial society work together to improve our society’s economy. Despite sociology’s concentration on the social relationships between individuals, post-industrial society does not. On the other hand, post-industrial society emphasizes the many stages of social development in the case that the income generated by manufacturers is less than that of the economy’s service sector (Singh, S. Rape vs. Patriarchy: A Sociological Analysis). Because of this, the study of sociology shows that post-industrial society is characterized by an economic shift away from manufacturing toward services, which is linked to further societal changes. This is to ensure that manufacturing jobs are completely outsourced to other nations, that people may work from home, that there are global communities and global networking, and that these things all happen. I want to mention Daniel Bell’s “The Coming of Post-Industrial Society” towards the film’s end. A post-industrial civilization, according to Bell, is an information-based society. The government shapes information on this planet. So, it improves social control by this. We see how Smith manipulates the past to create a new reality. People go about their daily routines believing that the information they’ve been fed is accurate. Therefore, it is essential in sociology that the post-industrial society plays no assumed or taken-for-granted role.

Surveillance; fear of being observed to be doing anything improper. Additionally, criminology being part of sociology, concentrates on the way crime practices has altered its usage of using threats to inflict conflicts with the fear of getting physical punishment for the purpose of controlling via the surveillance. The shifting of castigation from being a violent public display to being kept away. Of late, punishment has moved from being physical way; the one that was practically done on the individual to psychological one. Currently, the technique of punishing people has often become about fluctuating the mentality and the passion. The wired practice indicates a change in how power is wielded in society, which is contrary to the sociological ethics, whereby there have been a shift of power through control to threat of force to punitive authority. The controller controls the disciplinary power through monitoring and surveillance of populations. The movie, directed by Michael Radford, depicts the usage of sovereign authority exercised on the inmates, especially when assigning them tedious labor and checking their various performances (JakościowejPP 240-249). It was realized from the movie that this form of dangerous castigation does not currently exist. Instead of that public punishment, it has been shifted to the prison where castigation is done in an enclosed prison room. Through this, authorities have been in a position to reduce the level of crime rates. Additionally, they attempted to reduce crime rate through the application of time tables interventions like the educational programs to aim at minimizing crime rate so as to develop sociology in the society. Unfortunately, disciplinary power, along with criminology, kills human rights and inflicts misery, notably on the citizens and the inmates.

Besides, Faith-based communities are dynamic and ever-evolving entities in contrast to popular conceptions of the two. Adaptations and inventions to ever-changing cultural, political, and economic circumstances can be seen in religious beliefs and structures. Eventually, religions would cease to have any relevance in the modern world if they did not undergo ongoing evolution. This has happened to a lot of religions throughout history. Religious movements can have a bigger impact on people’s beliefs and organizational structures than leaders who have the authority to make such changes. This essay examines the role of religious movements in bringing about both internal and external change. Their religion plays a key role in bringing people from different backgrounds together, enhancing sociology in society. The essay is divided into three sections. Based on the movement’s origins and objective of change, a simple typology of religious movements is used to analyze the traditional scientific literature on religious movements (Altheide, 1987). Second, the phenomena of religious fundamentalism are investigated as a model for religious movements to be compared to. Since fundamentalism was a significant religious movement in the twentieth century, it is an appropriate choice for this essay’s subject matter. Towards the end of the paper, the rising theoretical work on religious movements is connected to certain practical consequences and the future of religion in human cultures.

Roles Of Sociology in The Society

From the previous chapters of Sociology during lectures, it was realized that sociology plays some of the significant roles in society omitted in the movie. It would be important to point out that sociology is a wide area that covers fields such as engineering, agriculture and other branches. It impacts useful ideas such as those of the administrative, hence leadership skills. Through sociology, unified humanity has widely grown in a world which initially an isolated planet. Furthermore, building and evaluating aspects of social and culture, humanity will too effectively develop and overcome the archaic cultural level which at some point affects sociology in our society. It should therefore be responsibility of everyone to participate on the various ways of embracing sociology for the betterment of the society.

Besides, despite different countries in the world currently involving themselves in the war due to disagreements, sociology is not left behind in providing solutions to the various challenges, such as those that cause wars. Nations against nations occasionally involve themselves. They do us through the use of dangerous weapons and harmful poisonous atomic gases which are dangerous to human health. Through this, millions of people in such war torn areas lose their lives and lotes of property are damaged, hence weaking of the sociology in the society. (Glevarec & Cibois, 2021). Furthermore, it proves us with up-to-date global information. Its role in adding knowledge to society and identifying the government with the community is crucial. The practical individualism role of the sociology month the people assist them in their various daily activities. These values include; self-understanding, understanding of self-resource limitations, and individual potentialities. It further builds the understanding of human society and how the social system operates. Comparative various roles of sociology in society play various keys roles which can not be assumed nor neglected.

Challenges Affecting Sociologies

Despite the many functions in modern society, performing activities and medical conditions are among the issues sociological faces. As discussed in earlier chapters, eating disorder is a key issue in sociology. Childhood obesity is also sometimes viewed as a form of the emotional problem caused by inadequate self-control, a low sense of self-worth, or other issues. This may be a reasonable argument, but it doesn’t explain why some people suffer from disordered eating in the first place (Sociology, pp 271-291). A belief that ignores the greater social and cultural dynamics that contribute to these problems can occasionally continue to influence individuals. A worldview that ignores the greater cultural and economic dynamics that contribute to these problems can occasionally continue to influence people. In a previous session, we saw some illustrations of this circumstance. Many people suffering from eating disorders in the United States were women, not men, as we discovered. Why are women more likely to suffer from disordered eating in the United States than men, and why are they more likely to die? Only by looking at the norm of attractiveness for women, which promotes a slender figure, can we answer these hard problems. There would be significantly fewer weight problems in women in the United States today if this societal expectation didn’t exist. No matter how well we treat the girls and women who suffer from eating disorders, there will always be others who will rise to their position. Eating disorders should be viewed as a public health problem, not just a personal one.

Even when dealing with personal and public issues, sociology is no different. Personal issues; are problems that affect both people and the broader community. Such issues blame the individual for their failures. One example of such circumstances is eating problems, divorce, and unemployment. Social problems that affect many people are referred to as “public concerns,” and their roots can be found in a society’s social structure and culture. Individuals’ difficulties are consequently linked to problems in society. Because of these difficulties, sociologists have discovered that many issues that were previously thought of as private woes can now be seen as public concerns, allowing them to understand better the structural causes of individual problems (Bulaeva, 2021). Sociology is also affected by unemployment, in addition to the issues listed. Having only a few people out of work can be interpreted as laziness and a lack of work ethic. In this case, their joblessness could be viewed as their problem. However, because millions of individuals are affected by the same unemployment problem, the issue of joblessness is best viewed as a public problem and a national concern. In most cases the correct definition of the problem as well as that of spectrum of the available solutions needs our evaluation of the economic together with political bodies of the society. In most cases, it does not only the personal position and values of a fling of individuals to come up with solutions to these challenges. Through doing this, sociology’s problems in our daily lives will be solved in minutes.

To help us understand a blaming the victim ideology, it is necessary to consider why vulnerable kids brought up in towns normally learn very little in their schools. The technique of blame game the guardians and parents of such children do not care about their education, fail to train them on the desirable study methods, similarly fail to give them encouragement on matters of their serious academics. This particular technique of justification applies to some parents, ignoring more crucial evidence: the sad shape of America’s municipal schools, which majorly are overpopulated with learners, decrepit structures housing old textbooks and out-of-date equipment (Bulaeva, 2021). Improving the education standards of these poor children requires improvement of the schools together with other learning facilities, just like it is done in western nations such as the united states.

Furthermore, women’s ability to sire children is dependent on their duty in society. This limits them to taking responsibility of upbringing the child and, at the same time, taking responsibility for taking care of the husband. However, the original conflict is viewed in perspective as justifiable since it failed to pay much attention to the subjugation of women inherent in man’s authority. Pressure on women from men due to patriarch makes women view men as the cause of problems in the various families. Such problems include social violence and sexual violence against women, including physical and sexual violence against women. Sociologists who campaign against patriarchs make the first line of analysis of sociology. Gender inequity rests because of the weakness of women in society (Bulaeva, 2021). The patriarchal mentality of men makes them feel superior to women and have absolute authority over women. The sociological problem of feminism and patriarch similarly affects a woman’s well-being, making her look like a lesser human being before the eye of her husband and in the community. Therefore, it should be dealt with to grass root level.

Sociological Theory

The approach. Structural functionalism, conflict, and functionalism are the three main socio-cultural principles that new learners develop in their first year of college. And each has a unique method of understanding different sectors of society and human psychology. Comparing and contrasting theoretical approaches might help shed light on the topic. In terms of micro-sociology, a suitable example would be the interactional school of thought. As this theory is known, this approach asserts that our actions are heavily impacted by the interpretations and symbols we give to words. The labels we are given by others impact our sense of self, which is shaped by our interactions with others since this label gives us a different perspective on ourselves. Engaging with other people in the community develops meaning for us (Glevarec & Cibois, 2021).

In other words, the social cognition viewpoint stresses people’s behavior as a response to one’s subjective understanding of the world. Regardless of whether we truly believe the world will end at a specific time and date, the notion would substantially impact our actions. Consequently, even if our reality views are erroneous, the objects we perceive as real can nonetheless be real.

Emerging Issues of Sociology

Some of the emerging issues are those that deals with sociological family morals, schooling, familiarity, as well as tradition. This is because such sociological issues helps in communicating ethics to the youths. To put it another way, all components of society are viewed as either functional or dysfunctional depending on whether they contribute to society’s stability. However, what is social stability? Even within the ranks of functionalists, you’ll discover a wide range of responses. However, there are some situations which are posing more challenge for identification as compared to others. On the other hand, some features of society may participate in and at the same time limit from social instability. For example, crime has been linked to societal unrest. However, it can also serve a practical purpose by fostering a sense of community and helping to modify societal standards. Please find out more about the field of sociology by reading up on it. When we look at society through the lens of the conflict perspective, we see that it comprises disparate groups, each with its own set of goals and objectives. This chapter focuses on the social approach to the theory of disabilities. As a field of study, sociology is inquisitive and divisive by its very nature. Sociologists are in the business of answering questions, honing in on specific issues, and offering critiques of how things are in society. Sociologists have generally accepted the dominant hegemony when discussing Disability in terms of medical and psychiatric issues (Glevarec & Cibois, 2021). How disabled people act as a powerful social movement has been disregarded by sociological studies focused on developing theories of contemporary societies and the pursuit of change. As a result of their position in the wider socio-economic and political context, disabled individuals are held in high regard.

Tourism economics plays significant progress tourism in terms of profit maximization. In the field of tourism, sociology enhances tourism economics to expand rapidly compared to the previous years. This gives a good reflection on the progressively increasing interest and profits earned in the tourism sector. With the emergence of new sociology in tourism, tourism papers are published in tourism and economics journals. Similarly, there is a current unique journal (Farber & Harris, 2022).

Those who work for wages and those who control the system of industry form separate social strata as a result of industrialization. To sustain power inequalities, the capitalists, who earn products, use their excessive dominance and power over governmental systems to reshape society. A zero-sum game, says conflict theory emphasizes theorists, dictates that development for one organization can only be achieved at the price of a rival group’s gains. Some people are of the opposite opinion. However, conflict theory isn’t just about class. Religious, racial, sex, and political groups can be defined in numerous ways. Each group’s members are motivated by what is best for the group. Interaction theory encourages us to examine which organizations already have authority and who is prospering from the existing societal structures within every scenario. For example, the incidence of various forms of cancer in men and women is quite variable. How does the money for research studies end up going? Theories on criminal behavior. Sociologists’ work has had a significant impact on the denial of its utility, even writing a book titled Why Anthropology Does Not Apply.

It is widely accepted in American sociology that information has the power to influence them typically. Social scientists observe a growing divide between those conducting ordinary discipline research and those conducting research into public policy issues (Farber, & Harris, 2022). The scientific accomplishments of the social sciences as a whole. A doctorate in sociology is on par with a doctorate in medicine, physics, or agriculture. Dangerous atomic arms, nuclear electricity, new types of therapy, and new advances in food production are all examples of technological advancements that are not included. The cognitive achievements of the field are also not considered comparable to those of many other disciplines. And practical research in sociology, unlike applied research in the natural sciences or medicine, does not include using scientifically tested general principles to explain and manage specific social issues since such principles do not yet exist. This chapter argues that statisticians’ self-doubt regarding their subject’s practical relevance is incorrect, while the seemingly powerful arguments against credible practical criminology hinge on a misguided conception of the process of knowledge application in the social sciences. Its cognitive abilities are not comparable to those of many other disciplines. The scientific accomplishments of the social sciences as a field of study. Sociology, medicine, physics, and agriculture are all analogous. Dangerous poisonous and autonomic arms, nuclear electricity, new types of therapy, and new advances in food production are all examples of technological advancements that are not included (Barton, 2018). Because sociology does not yet have scientifically validated general principles that can explain and manage specific social problems, employed explore in sociology is considered distinct from applied research in the natural and medical sciences. This chapter argues that sociologists’ self-doubt regarding their subject’s practical relevance is incorrect, and on the other hand, the seemingly influential opinions in contradiction to a reliably applied sociology hinge on a misguided commencement of the procedure of information application in the social sciences.

Conclusively, the movie, which Michael Radford directed, is full of sociological irony. Especially the way inmates are treated by the soldiers. The work shows much inhuman treatment and carelessness, especially by the senior officials. Furthermore, it displays cow senior officials practice corruption, especially in government offices, which do not show any sociology signs. Since sociology is a product of the new society, theories of sociology hold to embrace modern civilization; with various due roles of sociology in our lives and society, it should be reaffirmed and built strongly for its positive contributions. Therefore, it should be our responsibility to understand sociology as part of our daily lives and its many different functions in our lives.

Analyzing How Civil War Evolved From A War To Maintain Union To An Attempt To End Slavery In The United States Sample College Essay

The American Civil War was a battle between the United States and the Confederate States of America. During the conflict, the United States was referred to as the North, and the Confederate states were referred to as the South. Abraham Lincoln served as President of the United States of America, and Jefferson Davis served as President of the South. At the end of the battle, 620,000 soldiers had died, and the damage in the South was immense (Nps.gov. n.d). What was the root of all this carnage? The Civil War was sparked by a significant divide between the South and the North over various political and economic reasons. The most crucial problems for the North and the South were those of the state’s rights and slavery. Thus, it is essential to understand how American Civil War evolved to maintain Union and to an attempt to end slavery.

The first reason which led to civil war was disagreement between the North and South north regarding the power of the federal government and state government. The South believed that the federal government should be kept to a bare minimum while granting the states additional power regarding state rights. This debate had been raging between politicians from the South and those from the North who believed that more authority should be concentrated at the federal level. The Southern states were adamant that they were not subject to the dictates of the federal government and that they may at any time choose to secede from the Union (Nps.gov. n.d). Their belief was primarily based on their interpretation of the Constitution. The Preamble of the Constitution begins with the words We the people of the United States. This paragraph, along with other passages in the Constitution, was the one in which the interpretations of the North and the South varied (Finkelman, 17). In the South, the only option to provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare was to devolve authority to the states. The Southern states feared that they would be disadvantaged since the more populous Northern states had radically different requirements as a people. The North was more industrial, and they imported products, while the South was more agricultural and exported commodities. Because they perceived themselves to be at a disadvantage, they promptly erected defenses against the North’s assault on their rights as sovereign states. When the North chose Abraham Lincoln as its president, the South reacted. The secession of the South was unavoidable.

The second reason the civil war evolved to end slavery is because of the election of President Lincoln, who was against slavery. When President Lincoln was elected, the Southern states wished to secede because of his firm belief in the moral evil of slavery. Since the founding of the United States, the Southern states had been pressured by their northern counterparts to abolish slavery. This was impossible since slavery was such an integral element of the prosperity of the South. The agriculture of the South was primarily reliant on the usage of slavery since they required enslaved people to pick crops such as cotton (Nps.gov. n.d). When the newly elected president ran a campaign that fiercely opposed the use and spread of slavery in the United States, the southern states were outraged. Relations between the South and the North have only deteriorated more due to the presidential election. The fight over slavery had been simmering before Lincoln’s election in 1860 (Finkelman, 14). When the South recognized that Lincoln had been elected, the tensions between abolitionists and pro-slavery supporters reached a boiling point. On December 20, 1860, the state of South Carolina declared its intention to secede from the Union, prompting other states to follow suit.

Another reason why the civil war prompted the end of slavery was the instance when the Confederate States of America fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. This marked the beginning of a brand-new period in the history of the United States (Finkelman, 15). A protracted and deadly battle erupted due to the combined issues of state rights and slavery. In the end, the South surrendered, signing the peace treaty at the Appomattox Courthouse in 1865. At the end of the war, the South’s most prized aspects of its economy and governance were taken away (Nps.gov. n.d). The Southern states that had seceded were allowed to rejoin the Union as long as slavery was abolished and their powers as states were restricted. They rejoined the rest of the states under the protection of a more powerful central authority.

Finally, it should be noted that the Civil War was initially conceived as a war to maintain the Union. Slavery, on the other hand, was a part of it from the outset. Following a series of events, the conflict evolved into a campaign to abolish slavery. Even though the war was initially a limited conflict aimed to maintain the Union, it had other dimensions, one of which was slavery. In the first instance, factions located in both the North and South backed the opposing side. The southern states supported slavery, and they banded together to maintain it against all opposition. The northern states opposed slavery. The election of Abraham Lincoln as president was a vote for preserving the Union while also pushing for the abolition of slavery, which he was successful in accomplishing.
