Boston Beer Company’s Supply Chain Management Sample Paper

Every company should pay specific attention to supply chain management because it contributes to a smooth and successful overall performance. Supply chains consist of many aspects, which makes it challenging to assess whether they are useful. That is why various metrics can be used to evaluate the efficiency of these phenomena. As for Boston Beer Company, both soft and core metrics are suitable to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the company’s supply chain management.

Soft metrics allow to the analysis of a general state of supply chain management. Among them, collaboration with supply chain partners and even competitors deserves specific attention. This indicator demonstrates whether a firm can overcome existing difficulties in cooperation. Risk management methods stand for the second soft metric to be considered. Effective supply chain management focuses on developing many ways to handle and minimize possible risks and their consequences. In the modern world, information is said to be the most valuable asset. That is why companies should take appropriate measures to protect their data. As for supply chain management, its effectiveness becomes higher if helpful cybersecurity systems accompany it.

In addition to that, core metrics also can be used to evaluate supply chain management. On the one hand, it is reasonable to pay attention to the average days of inventory. This indicator shows how many days it takes for a company to turn its stock into sales. It is calculated by dividing 365 (the number of days in a year) by inventory turnover. As for the latter metric, it demonstrates how many times a company’s inventory cycles per year. To find it, one should divide the cost of goods sold by average inventory.

At present, it is necessary to apply the metrics above to evaluate the effectiveness of the Boston Beer Company’s supply chain management. Thus, there is no evidence that Boston Beer Company cooperates in the given sphere with one of 7,000 rival breweries.1 At the same time, the company considers many risk factors that can be material for them in the future, which means that ways to overcome them.2 What is more, the company heavily relies on complex information systems that are designed to contribute to both better supply chain management and cyber safety.3

Furthermore, the core metrics can provide more detailed information on the phenomenon under consideration. Applying the data from balance sheets and statement of comprehensive income of the company, one can calculate that inventory turnover is 7.99.4 It means that the company’s turnover cycles almost eight times per year. The obtained information makes it possible to calculate the value of the average days of inventory. It accounts for 45.68 days, meaning that it takes this period for Boston Beer Company to convert its stock into sales.

In conclusion, various metrics of supply chain management have been identified and assessed. As for the soft ones, two of three indicators point out that Boston Beer Company can impress with a decent level of this management. What is more, the absence of cooperation with rivals is not the most crucial weakness as to supply chain management. The core metrics demonstrate that the phenomenon under consideration is of a decent level because the inventory rate of 7.99 and average days of inventory of 45.68 are adequate indicators for a brewery company. Thus, both core and soft metrics prove that Boston Beer Company has decent supply chain management.

Ecofeminism: Women Against Climate Change

Ecofeminism is one of the essential trends of a coherent society that includes many ideas and concepts prevalent in the modern world. For this reason, the given course can be considered an important source of knowledge that provides learners with information that is fundamental for an enhanced understanding of this phenomenon. One of the critical outtakes is that balance is a core component of nature that should be observed to guarantee that the planet will be able to evolve and recover from the pernicious impact of human activity. The ruthless exploitation of its resources, as well as the discrimination and oppression of women, becomes central reasons for the fast deterioration of the state of the environment and the health of the nation, which proves the ideas of this movement.

These assumptions can be paralleled to the beliefs of goddess mythology. In ancient times people correctly realized the importance of both these two aspects. In a significant number of cultures, females are identified with nature because of their ability to give life, protect, and care about people. Many goddesses that were created by different nations served as the embodiment of qualities critical for people, and the choice of a woman, as the character who combined them, was not accidental. They represented the balance of a person and nature, their ability to cooperate with the world and remain in harmony.

In general, ecofeminism can be determined as the belief that the domination of women and nature is the basis for the hierarchy of male and female and relations. At the same time, women and the earth are taken as the core of the natural world and its future existence. From the ecofeminist perspective, the domination of men and the exploitation of women result in the destruction of the environment and the appearance of multiple issues that deteriorate the health of the nation. For this reason, there is a critical need for finding the balance that can be achieved by the promotion of feminism and green incentives that will help to save the planet. In this regard, ecofeminism becomes a combination of these elements.

The given concept rests on various ancient mythologies and visions created by people with an attempt to describe the rules of nature and the way it works. Many created goddesses represented characteristics of the earth and its basic features. For this reason, ecofeminism becomes closely connected to goddess mythology and such recognizable images as Athena, who embodies multiple qualities such as wisdom, power, creativity, and protection. Moreover, today, the existing environmental issues can be analyzed from the perspective of women’s activism and the need for balance in relations with nature and between genders, which is one of the basic assumptions of ecofeminism. In general, the reconsideration of society’s relationship with the planet seems the most effective method that can be used to solve many environmental problems and create new positive tendencies.

Topic of Interest

Regarding these concepts, the area that is most interesting to me is climate change. It is an extremely broad concept that includes such elements as global warming, greening the planted, litter, deforestation, different kinds of pollution, and extinction of species. I think that these factors are critical for contemporary society as their further disregard might result in unrecoverable changes in nature and deterioration of the health of populations globally. It is vital to save our planet, give it to our descendants, and start the process of its recovery until it is too late. At the same time, today, people can already see the results of their unwise exploitation of natural resources and disregard critical problems. From the perspective of ecofeminism, the primary cause for these outcomes is the absence of balance in relation to nature. In patriarchal societies, power is one of the core values, which means that following this concept, humanity will continue to exploit the planet. At the same time, the wiser and more effective approach to cooperation with nature might presuppose the look for new forms that could help to avoid substantial damage to its resources. A new balance can be achieved by analyzing the most problematic climate issues from the perspective of an equal, not patriarchal, society.

That is why women, who possess a better understanding of compromise and balance because of their nature, become more active in their attempts to reconsider patterns that are used today and stop the further destruction of the planet. There are multiple sources of their growing interest in the given problem. In many cases, females are also more vulnerable to climate change and are the first to experience its negative impact. It means that they have to act, to improve their states via the protection of the planet. Moreover, being responsible for children and their upbringing, women are more concerned about the deterioration of the climate as a direct threat to the next generations.

The given question is critically important to me. I correctly realize the fact that now the planet is slowly dying because of the development of various industries and consumer society. That is why the balance is a key to solving the problems mentioned above, as the inclusion of oppressed women in the international discourse might help to add new and fresh ideas and eliminate many problematic issues in relations with nature and between genders.

Research Question

The scope of the selected area means that there is a need to narrow the research with the primary goal to investigate a particular aspect and provide clear answers that can be used as the basis for new projects. For this reason, regarding the sphere of interest, the following research question can be formulated:

What are the main sources of women’s activism around climate change, and how this relates to their oppression as women in patriarchal societies?

The theme remains broad; however, the main idea is to investigate the sources of women’s eco-activism and how it can be correlated with their oppression in patriarchal societies. The study will offer conclusions that can be used to evidence the role of ecofeminism in modern society and its positive impact on traditionally complex environmental and gender themes.

However, the given structure can be changed in the course of the research as new discovered factors or information might precondition the appearance of new ideas or directions of the study. In general, the following outline can be followed to create the paper that would be able to answer the research question mentioned above.

White Racial Identity: When I Learned About Race

In the modern world, where globalization has impacted diverse spheres of human life and migration is a natural process, people of different nationalities, races, and classes live in the same social spaces. When one perceives race of others, he or she realizes his or her own racial identity, thus becoming aware of oneself as a member of a multinational society. The process of such an understanding is related to cognition and might evolve consciously or subconsciously. In this paper, I will reflect on my personal experience of race to claim that white racial identity is often perceived as default with more opportunities provided for them while non-whites are exposed to racism.

Since my early childhood, I have not been aware of race as a concept. My whole family is all Italian, including parents and grandparents. I did not consciously realize that I am white, and some people are not because, at an early age, I did not encounter anyone of other race than mine. However, it changed with my entrance to the school. Since I was a student of an American international catholic school in Rome, I interacted with many students coming from different cultures and nationalities. Such diversity influenced not only the way I interacted with others but also shaped my self-perception as a white Italian.

I remember my first acquaintances with people from China and Latin America. They were memorable because it was challenging for me to pronounce and remember some of their names, which were so different from those I got used to; however, they memorized my name quickly. Such a message about race and diversity came from my school community and taught me about the differences between the students of a different race and me. That was one of the first encounters with white privilege in my life.

Other messages about race I received through my life came from educational materials and media. I learned English while being in Rome, and as a part of my acquaintance with the language, I studied the culture and history of the USA, which is filled with racial disparities. The more I thought about black people suffering from racism either implicitly or explicitly, the more I understood how I have always take my whiteness for granted. When I watched movies about black Americans, I noticed that they were often portrayed as those involved in illegal actions or of poor reputation. I felt distanced from such reality because nobody ever suspected me in anything only because I was white. As Sullivan states, white privilege is “about white people having unfair advantages because of their whiteness” (7). However, this idea may only be understood in the context of the acknowledgment of the existence of other races, which must be equal in right with white.

Before these experiences, I have never consciously applied the notion of race to myself. Every time I heard such words as ‘race,’ or ‘racism,’ I immediately attributed them to African-Americans or Latinos but not to white people. Such a predisposition to being reluctant to acknowledge racism by white people imposes even more significant racial disparity in the world, where, despite striving for equality, there exists implicit bias (Sullivan 66). Therefore, in my adolescent years and later, the things I learned from my communication with the diverse school community and media shifted my self-perception from being a person who does not think about racial identity to the one who consciously acknowledges it.

When I moved to Los Angeles and entered the society that was very diverse in terms of race, the experiences I had in Rome helped me better assimilate into the new environment. Being aware of my own racial identity and the implied privilege I had as a white person, I managed to integrate into the multicultural society more easily. Nonetheless, the journey of understanding oneself as a representative of a particular race is a time-consuming and complicated cognitive process that involves self-analysis and openness. Now that I reexamine my racial identity as a representative of a dominating race, I compare white privilege to the default perception of the world by healthy people. My younger brother is autistic and has difficulties in speaking, which imposes significant complications for him in integration to the society. As people with disparities struggle to enter the world of dominant healthy people, national minorities struggle to withstand the imposed dominance of whiteness in the same way. We should understand ourselves as human beings of a particular race to be able to live in a diverse community that the modern world becomes.

To summarize the discussion, it is evident that one learns about race through different sources of influence, including personal life experience of interaction with other people, education, or media. However, being a white person, I have gone through the process of racial acknowledgment without traumatizing encounters with people of other races. In the course of my integration into a multicultural society, I observed how white privilege is a real phenomenon. That is why it is essential to understand race as a crucial element of perceiving oneself to ensure a conscious understanding of one’s identity.
