Culture Dynamics: Social Changes And Role Of Migration Writing Sample

Introduction

Social changes are intrinsically interwoven into the cultural ones, which is why the role of migration has to be considered when exploring culture dynamics. For instance, the period of rapid industrialization in the 19th century aligns with the extensive increase in immigration rates observed roughly at the same time (Freilich and Addad 97). The migration process was easily explained by the fact that the industrialization process rendered small towns and villages nearly useless in the grand scheme of the technological progress. Consequently, the levels of unemployment rose drastically in the rural setting, causing people to flee to the urban environments. The resulting cultural exchange between migrants from the rural areas and residents of urban ones determined the further evolution of the U.S. culture.

However, negative dynamics in migration rates also has a tangible effect on the culture dynamics. For example, the Caucasian migration to the U.S., which started in the 1880s, was put to a halt as the Spanish flu became a pandemic among the specified population. The cessation of the migration process, in turn, defined the opportunity for a larger cultural variety and the preservation of the local traditions. Likewise, the incident in Jamestown in 1619, which involved the attack and subsequent death of local Native Americans defines the years of animosity toward the specified cultural minority. Finally, the Ides of March of 1944 mark the time in world history when the global conflict swept the entire humankind, causing the representatives of different cultures to collaborate against Nazism (White 28).

Catastrophes

Cataclysms represent another type of change that promotes massive alterations in the cultural landscape of a range of populations. For example, the Noachian flood as one of the most notorious catastrophes can be seen as the representation of a universal change that brings people of all ethnicities and nations closer. Described in “Gilgamesh,” the theme of the flood is linked to that one of immortality, thus possibly implying that the cultural legacy of a civilization survives even the most damaging events, down to catastrophes and cataclysms. Another catastrophe that plays a pivotal role in the global culture is that one of Sodom and Gomorrah, yet the specified narrative has a distinctively different purpose, making one question the problem of morality and its possible outcomes in the form of self-destruction. Likewise, the destruction of Pompeii caused by a volcano eruption is often colored in the same moral tone in most narratives.

War

Warfare is another inseparable element of the legacy of the humankind. Causing immense destructions, war typically leads to dramatic changes in the cultural landscape, from centuries of conflicts between people of certain cultures to the destruction of specific cultures and people belonging to them. The case of Hyksos in 1600 BC proves the dramatic impact that warfare has on culture on local and global levels. As Hyksos took over Thebes in 1700 BC, the culture of the latter was diluted to a considerable extent by the introduction of new ones into the specified environment, with an array of changes to how Thebans expressed themselves in the art (Connolly et al. 16). In fact, the specified culture fusion defined the progress that Hyksos achieved in the Middle East afterward. In turn, once the Hyksos Empire was overthrown, the cultural dynamics and the exchange in experience nearly ceased to exist.

Long-Term Economic Growth In The East Asian States

The economic status of East Asia has increased drastically in the past few decades. Most nations in the region can currently be compared to Western European countries. Foreigners are lured into the region to seek better living standards which they are unable to experience from their native countries. Although immigrants contribute positively to the economy, they cause overpopulation, native culture erosion, low wages, and unemployment.

East Asian countries are striving to control population growth by reducing the number of births. Most families have one child per household to enhance the sustainability of resources. However, foreign immigration increases the population even though the government documents some settlers. For instance, Singapore had 1,351,8000 foreign workers in June 2020, and the number was projected to increase (ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, 2020). It, therefore, implies that a quarter of the population is people from other countries. Hence, foreign workers cause overpopulation on the Eastern side of the Asian continent.

Second, the immigration of foreign workers to East Asia will lead to the erosion of the native culture. Every country has its traditions, which are subscribed from the local practices. However, when foreigners come into the area, they introduce new beliefs which may influence the original practices. Yilmaz (2016) illustrates that the workers also adopt the new values, making them forget their original traditions. In the long term, the culture of the locals will be eroded with new and mixed cultures.

Third, foreign workers will cause low wage payments and unemployment for the locals. Although educated East Asians prefer white-collar jobs, some natives are not well educated to get employments informal sectors. As a result, they seek employment in informal jobs currently dominated by foreigners (Ullah, 2016). Therefore, they are forced to compete with immigrants for available opportunities. Moreover, a surge in demand for jobs leads to low salaries since there are many people seeking employment. Thus, foreign workers will take the employment opportunities of the locals and also cause low income.

Succinctly, foreign workers should be controlled by going to East Asia. Though they contribute to the region’s economic growth, their presence leads to overpopulation, culture erosion, and unemployment for the natives who lack higher education qualifications. A surge in population will lead to the depletion of the resources needed by the future generation of the natives. Hence, foreign workers are not essential to long-term economic growth in the East Asian State.

Pizza Hut Dance Party for NFL

As an official NFL sponsor, Pizza Hut launched an augmented reality experience that allowed fans to interact and dance together with two stars of Pittsburgh Steelers (Maze, 2018). Free pizza was provided as well during the game. Smith-Shuster was selected as the ambassador of the “Doorbell Dance” campaign and the face of social media promotions. Fans posted numerous “Doorbell” dances on Instagram, tagging Pizza Hut.

Coca-Cola Line-up Campaigns

Coca-Cola used the idea from its “Share a Coke” campaign to announce new line-ups for various MLB teams (“Top 13 best sports activations,” 2018). The Atlanta Braves, the Dodgers, the Astros were some of the Major League teams that posted photos of the beverage bottles with the names of the players for the upcoming games on various social media platforms, such as Instagram and Twitter.

Sleep Numbers Beds Giveaway Campaign

Another successful sponsorship activation campaign was done by Sleep Number in 2018. The Company gave a free bed to every NFL player, and the fans had an opportunity to use a digital backdrop at the NFL Experience and create their unique fan room (Enoch, 2020). The campaign was received well on social media, and multiple fans shared the photos of their ultimate fan bedrooms.

The Best Example of Sports Activation

3M partnered with Minnesota Vikings and lit the whole U. S. Bank Stadium purple before the game against the Green Bay Packers. The 66 thousand fans participated by using a purple film on command to create the now-famous purple glow (“Top 13 best sports activations,” 2018). This economic activation employed social media on a large scale to successfully bring the desired message to the audience.
