The book Restart by the author Gordon Korman is a book based on emotions. Since the book is grounded on emotions, it was written in 1st person. The main character Chase Ambrose went through an extensive change. Not only did he fracture his former friendship but, he constructed a new friendship with Shoshanna Weber and Brendon Espinoza. This project is based on intuition and, his vast change on lifestyle. We will display emotions by doing a project called Mind Engine, which is a car engine similar to a brain, and we will present thoughts and emotions through a project called Brain Train, it will be shown as a train station in a brain.
The book is written in the first person, due to it being based on emotions and deep thoughts. Our opinion on the book is that it is a profound book solemnly based on the main characters feelings and, it was an extremely relatable book. The conflict of this book is the main character trying to start a new life despite his life (before he got amnesia) being immoral, and there were many tough obstacles along the way. The book took place in a fictional city which made the book more fascinating. The antagonists are Chase’s old life, Bear and Aaron, and of course Chase as the protagonist. The first project represents emotions by connecting it with Chase.
Brain Train: To begin with, my (Ramyanaga Nagarur) project is established on emotions and feelings. The visual is a brain with multiple train stations in the interior. The supplies to create this project are paint, canvas, sketches, paint brushes and, sharpies. Each station is dedicated to an emotion, which Chase goes through. In my perspective, I love this book because it is precise and has a well-planned plot. The purpose of this fable is to show how drastically Chase changes. The second project is a car that functions like a human brain.
Mind Engine: This project is based on the human brain. The car engine is similar to the human brain; therefore, making the cars complexity parallel to a human brain. The brain tells the body what to do which is equivalent to a vehicle’s engine. This project will be portrayed on a canvas with sections explaining the emotions and how the emotion correlates with the mechanism. The materials to construct this project are paint, canvas, optional sketches, paint brushes and, sharpies. I (Sejal Mogalgiddi) think the book was intense and I felt a connection every time I read it. My project moves through literature because the emotion moves through the book regularly and so does a car. Therefore, our project is creative and intriguing.
Thus to conclude, we had pleasure doing the project. In these projects, we displayed how his emotions and sentiments affected his development in this manuscript. To briefly summarize the book, Chase fell off a roof; therefore, leading him to a life with amnesia. ‘I remember falling. At least I think I do. Or maybe that’s just because I know I fell. The grass is far away- until it isn’t anymore. Somebody screams. Wait-it’s me.’ By the author Gordon Korman pg.1 chapter 1 ‘Restart’. This quote is the starting point of Chase’s new life. Suddenly, he became subtle and became friends with the people he used to bully. We learned that we should follow the orders’ given, and be on our best behavior, amnesia or not.
How Technology Hinders Emotions
When I was walking down my street I saw a mother and a child going the other way. The mom was running and listening to music, unaware of the child’s screaming at a black screen inside the stroller. This is a prime example of how technology weakens bonds and simplifies emotions. It fortifies the idea that either you are happily staring at a screen or you are depressed without it. These are exactly the problems Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, a realistic fiction novel about people created by technology, and ‘Alone Together’ by Sherry Turkle, an excerpt about human relations with robots and the internet. Both authors warn the reader that as inventions get more intricate, the interactions people make with the world around them will lose true meaning.
The advancement of technology in everyday life promotes the slow deterioration of human emotion and thought. To begin, an increase in the use of technology creates an emotional gap between coworkers, friends, and even family. Turkle describes the situation by saying, ‘People are lonely. The network is seductive. But if we are always on, we may deny ourselves the rewards of solitude’ (265). As society gets ripped apart from the seams, people look more and more to the internet for emotional solace. This is only part of the problem, as then they too rather prefer the flashy screens over a family dinner. A cycle that never ends can never be a good thing, as it separates families and friends slowly, replacing them with fake families like in the Sims and online friends. Huxley’s idea of soma, a happy drug, is not a distant concept from the inner workings of the internet. In Brave New World, the author proclaims ‘And if ever, by some unlucky chance, anything unpleasant should somehow happen, why, there’s always soma to give you a holiday from the facts. And there’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and longsuffering’ (237-8).
When a person takes soma they are drugged into a state of happiness, with no worries in the world. Huxley’s fear of an invention that allows humans to be oblivious to others around them has come true but in another form – social media. Websites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook all create a fake sense of connection, when in fact everyone is the loneliest they have ever been. People need to interact more with the real world to understand more emotions than happy and sad; because when people lose these emotions they lose a core part of themselves. Equally important, the added presence of technology into everything has taken the experiences and emotions that someone makes when he or she completes a task or see a new thing and has made them utterly useless.
In ‘Alone Together’ the author makes it clear: A true experience is not as good to people anymore as an online video or a robot is. In the text, Turkle remarks that ‘A ten-year-old girl told me that she would prefer a robotic turtle because aliveness comes with aesthetic inconvenience: ‘Its water looks dirty. Gross’ (265). A little girl would much rather have a fake robot than seeing a real-life Galapagos tortoise, which is usually a once in a lifetime experience. Many people will never get to experience the emotion of seeing something this good in a lifetime, and if there are robots of these tortoises all over, what is the point of the excitement? People will lose that sense of experience forever. Huxley takes this point further by stating ‘[And] everybody happy and no one ever sad or angry, and every one belonging to everyone else, and the boxes where you could see and hear what was happening at the other side of the world, and babies in lovely clean bottles—everything so clean’ (). In the novel, everything is so clean and easily accessible, which according to him is the perfect future. This is the problem though, people will lose excitement and grief and suspense if they have everything at their fingertips. Why go to a foreign country when you can see pictures from a box? A clean life with everything available for you is not as emotionally complex as a messy one. Furthermore, modern day relationships with other humans are threatened by robots and machines.
The main argument of Turkle’s article is exactly this, even stating ‘I find people willing to seriously consider robots not only as pets but as potential friends, confidants, and even romantic partners’ (271). Many people nowadays believe that robots are family, too, like pet robot dinosaurs or vacuum cleaners with a cute face. It further restricts human emotion, as you cannot feel strongly about a box of metal compared to a partner. Emotions passed through these machines are not meaningful, they are programmed to do these things. Huxley tackles this problem differently, creating a world where humans are engineered by technology to have useless relationships. In the novel, Huxley explains ‘I know you don’t. And that’s why we went to bed together yesterday—like infants—instead of being adults and waiting’ (). The side effect of a beautiful technological world is useless relationships, and therefore useless emotions. In Brave New World, one of the characters named Bernard commented on his depressed life due to a lack of an emotional bond with a significant other. This is because of technology – it separates people and substitutes itself in their place, taking out the emotion and feeling people have between one another.
Consequently, people all over the world are separating emotionally due to the invention and progression of the technology we make. In ‘Alone Together’, Turkle is warning us about the connections we are breaking and emotions we are forgetting today, and in Brave New World Huxley threatens us with the world to come. Feelings are a core part of everyday life, and without complex emotions, nobody can truly express themselves. People need to step back from their screens and look and the things and people around them. They are real, they are there, and it is up to the individual to create complex emotions that drive the populus forward.
Emotions And Human Interaction Essay
As many people spend a large part of their lives working and advancing in careers, these places can also be a source of negative emotions and stress. One of the negative emotions that people experience in the workplace is anger.
Anger in the workplace can be triggered by wide variety of things. It can be triggered by something that we see as not being done correctly or feel threatened ourselves (Understanding Anger in the Workplace, 2018). Some other causes of anger in the workplace include not getting a fair share of something, receiving more than the fair share of the workload, feeling as though your rights have been violated, being threatened, your pride feels threatened, or someone threatens your position (Understanding Anger in the Workplace, 2018). These are only some of the ways that make people feel angry in the workplace.
When anger strikes people in the workplace, it is important to be able to recognize this early so it doesn’t escalate. There are also important components of the anger the worker could be experiencing that may not be related to work that is vital to understand.
This anger may be coming from previously unsolved anger at work that is intensified by an event experienced at work (Understanding Anger in the Workplace, 2018). They may also be having thoughts such as blaming or judging someone for something said or experiences. They may also be taking out their anger at work from something that is going on at home (Understanding Anger in the Workplace, 2018).
When someone is angry at work the best thing is to try to understand the full situation without getting fully absorbed into the situation (Pearson, 2017). If multiple people are involved, separate them and listen to them each one-on-one (Pearson, 2017). The person listening to them should be someone who can remain neutral through the entire process and won’t be siding either way (Pearson, 2017). This will allow all parties involved to be heard equally. These workers may need time to regain themselves, but appropriate action should be taken and then they should carry on with work if that is possible (Pearson, 2017).
The phases that people can go through when they are angry are attacking, extreme, aggressive, destructive, dominant, discrediting, hostile, and combative (Anger Management, 2018). It is important to recognize the anger in first phases to avoid any unwanted statements or actions.
These negative emotions can make it hard for good co-worker relationships. Anger can make it so co-workers do not want to work with you on a daily basis or they do not want to say things for fear of making you angry. They don’t want to be the person involved in the incident so they may start to avoid this person. Some people who have anger issues may need to work on techniques to control this if it becomes a problem. One of the best things they can do is recognize when they notice a trigger and try to calm themselves at that point.
I think that this article points out some good things that I hadn’t thought of. Many of times we are taking feelings to work and then a little thing sets off a negative emotion. I see that a lot. Although none of us mean for it to happen it does. I think that more of us could be better at focusing on what we are at work to do and leaving home stuff at home. I also think that if someone is better at something than me, so what? I ask them to help me. Many people do feel threatened by that and we have made the workplace like that. I think that we as nurses need to be better of offering help, educating each other, and recognizing when someone is having a hard time.
