Environmental Club At A High School Homework Essay Sample

This paper seeks to examine how the Environmental Club at a prominent all girls high school assists with the protection of the environment. Aim/ Objectives This research paper attempts to determine the following: The influence of the Environmental Club on the student population. What measure the club has put in place at the school to help protect and educate students about the environment. Show the effects the club has on their students and teachers. Literature Review The Environmental Club at ahigh school was founded in 2004 by their geography department.

The science department later joined forces. The club focus is to sensitize the public about the environment and how to conserve limited resources. They have promoted this through tree planting exercises, naming and explainting their purposes as well as bottle drives. The club promotes the protection of the environment by providing recycling bins within the school for plastic bottles and Styrofoam products. Many campaigns have been launched along with exhibition to inform the school community and visitors while teaching the students to be ambassadors for this cause.

They have also engaged other clubs and students in general to participate in cleaning up exercises of the beaches and watershed areas while promoting proper disposal of waste materials and how they affect the animals and the ecosystem. Through a 3r’s campaign person have been made aware of how to better care for the environment. The Environmental Club is considered as a special interest group as its main focus is to aid in the protection of the environment and passing on knowledge to others as they may help the cause.

According to Harilambus and Holbourn the Functionalist perspectives view society as being structured and social institutions aid in this. Education is considered one of the fundamental institutions in which a person is exposed to the norms, value as well as roles they are expected to fit into. “Homogeneity……. ; education perpetuates and reinforces this homogeneity by fixing in the child from the beginning the essentials similarities which collective life demands”, stated by Durkheim, 1961, first published in 1925.

An interest group seeks to educate the public on issue that affect majority of the population. Marxist have questioned education as a social institution since it tends to transmit a dominant culture which serves the interest of the ruling class rather than those of society on a whole as stated by Haralambus and Holbourn. The composition of interest group has evolved over time and has lead to study of three distinct approaches to the power these representational groups have.

An interest group refers to a group of individuals bonded together to exert pressure upon the government to achieve a common goal and acquire a common benefit. The interaction between both groups allows the government to listen to many people concern and find solution to them. Since the government is unable to deal with the immense responsibility which is delegated to it without interacting with every sector of national institution. The interest groups have immense power because they provide the government with the knowledge required to meet the many demands.

Every interest is seen as expressing a combines purpose of individuals that have come together to achieve certain objectives. The groups have limited organizational skills and knowledge of government to succeed in the few specific issue on their objectives. Since interest groups usually have a fluid membership due to which use the media and extreme action to obtain their goals. These groups usually are fighting for a change to private/public policy they find unfair but once they have met their goal the disband.

Burmese Pythons In Florida

Florida has a diverse range of snakes, from harmless garden snakes to the dangerous Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes. However, the focus for citizens and politicians is on the presence of Burmese Pythons in the Everglades, a National Park in southern Florida. These pythons have striking patterned skin and grow rapidly, making them popular as pets. Sadly, if not cared for properly, these pythons can attack their owners and even result in fatalities.

Due to negligence in caring for them, pythons are being released into the wild or nearby wooded areas. This has resulted in habitat depletion and a higher demand for Burmese pythons in the pet trade and hunting for their skins and flesh. As a result, these magnificent creatures have been added to the threatened species list. The Burmese Python, scientifically known as Python molurus bivittatus, is native to Southeast Asia. In Florida’s Everglades region, there has been an increasing population of Burmese Pythons.

According to USA Today, the Burmese Python, a popular exotic animal, has either been released or escaped from their owner’s homes or outdoor enclosures. These pythons originate from Southeast Asia and were brought to America as pets for trade. According to du Pre’s report in the mid-1990s, they first appeared in the Florida Everglades. National Geographic states that these snakes can grow up to 23 feet or longer and weigh up to 200 pounds. Furthermore, they possess exceptional swimming abilities and are capable of submerging themselves for up to 20 minutes.

According to du Pre, Florida’s Everglades may be home to “tens of thousands” of Burmese pythons. These carnivorous reptiles have been hunting various mammals such as raccoons, opossums, and bobcats. Scientists are worried about the situation getting worse. The presence of Burmese pythons in the Everglades was first reported in 1979 and they are considered invasive species because they have aggressively adapted to South Florida’s environment, as stated on Wikipedia. Between 2001 and 2005, over 200 Burmese pythons were seen within park boundaries.

There are around 180,000 pythons living in or near the Everglades area. They have also been seen in Big Cypress National Preserve and other areas. Burmese Pythons, which are one of four snake species not allowed to be imported into the United States, have caused significant problems for local communities because of what they eat. They can eat small rodents and even large animals like deer. Because of this, people who live nearby are very concerned about their pets becoming targets for these pythons.

Imagine being in their shoes, where their poor little pet is slowly squeezed to death and eaten by a five-foot snake after being put in their backyard. This is why they turn to their congressman, requesting the removal of these snakes to safeguard their animals. Burmese Pythons, available for as little as twenty dollars in pet shops, have become a lucrative business in the United States. Since 1990, the number of captive-bred snakes has exceeded 112,000. In 2007, nearly 250 snakes were removed from a National Park (Natural Resources…). Burmese Pythons can live for fifteen to twenty-five years, and female pythons can lay a hundred eggs. These hatchlings are larger than native snake hatchlings and grow rapidly with sufficient food. Despite being fierce predators, the Everglades’ pythons face threats from alligators, American crocodiles, black bears, and cougars as their most likely predators (Wikipedia). Considering the numerous factors that can cause harm to Burmese Pythons, stronger legislation should be enacted to protect them from being killed due to their size or because they prey on people’s pets.

The “2013 Python Challenge” took place from late January to February 18th, aiming to capture loose pythons outside of the National Park. The primary focus was on hunting Burmese pythons in the Everglades. A total of 1,600 participants from 38 states, Washington D.C., and Canada joined this competition for a chance to win cash prizes (Tuffley). Throughout the month-long Challenge, 68 pythons were successfully captured. The participant who caught the most pythons received a reward worth $1500, while $1000 was given to the hunter who caught the longest python.

At present, the University of Florida is housing 11 pythons that have been captured in the Everglades. These pythons are being kept there until the contest concludes. The main objective of this contest is to increase awareness about Burmese pythons and their negative effects on the Everglades ecosystem and indigenous wildlife. Additionally, it is crucial to recognize the sense of fulfillment individuals experience when they successfully catch and remove such a highly invasive snake.

The Burmese Pythons, originally native to Southern and Southeast Asia, were introduced as exotic pets. These pythons have a lifespan of up to 25 years and can grow to lengths of 25-26 feet, weighing over 200 pounds. While some see them as potential family pets, others view them as a threat to the Everglades environment. Some people who perceive them as pets may not fully comprehend the challenges associated with caring for these pythons. On the other hand, those who consider the pythons pests are often upset because their own pets have been killed or attacked by them. Despite government efforts to capture some of these pythons, there are still thousands remaining in the Everglades.

Echo By Walter De La Mare Analysis

In the first stanza of his poem, he gives us hints of this character being alone from the repeating of his echoing, “Who called? Who called?” “Through the whispering glades” meaning an empty space in the forest, this doesn’t necessary mean an forest, could represent the character’s mind. In the first stanza also tells of the character is unpleasant. “Hither, thither, baffled the birds”. Hither and thither both mean the coming of birds.

When we think of birds, we think freedom and not chained down but the word baffled in front of the word birds, means something happened. If the author were talking about freedom, why would he put that word that, simply indicating that what’s happening is far from good, the opposite of being free perhaps? “The coming of something that chains the character down” could be in different words the author is trying to suggest.

So far, we’ve seen that the author uses nature to describe or hint the character’s emotions. The second stanza is proof that nature has a main part in describing the character and maybe even the meaning the poem. “The leafy boughs on high”, means the “main” part of the branch, resaying nature is the main branch of the poem.

The second stanza also has the evidence that the character is depressed. “Hissed in the sun” Hissed mean a sharp note but can also mean displeasure. Figuring out that hissed could mean displeasure, resaying it would be” displeasure of the sun” The sun signals warm, light and hope, but saying there’s a displeasure to that could mean the opposite. “The dark air carried my cry” The author uses words of negativity, nature is also darken here, evidence that nature connects with the character. We for sure know that the character is depressed.

Green is the color of life, healing, growth and harmony. “Eyes in the green, in the shade. Saying it is in the shade, just decreases all those qualities of the color green to less to even nothing. “In the motionless brake” Says that this character is basically stuck in the shade. Stuck in depression, not being able to move on.

In the third stanza, we see that the character is frozen in his sorrow. In this stanza, we also figure out why the character feels the way he feels and why the poem maybe called “Echo”. “Voices I said what I said” What the character says” “For mockery sake” The character’s voice is a reflection of what people say to him or her. Mocking him or her again and again like a never-ending echo causing depression within the character. Going back to the first stanza, “Hither, thither, baffled the birds” now can be answered. What is causing the restriction of the character is people’s mockery.

Saying the words “Who cares” This signals strongest of the character but the continuation of “I bawled through my tears” signals that this character if at the point of giving up, the character can’t stand it anymore. “ The wind fell low” Wind shows force and strength. The wind fell low saying lost in power and will. Here the wind represents the Character losing his will and strength, he or she has given up by this part of the poem. “In the silence, who cares? Who cares? Shows that the character can only think of the mockery, even if alone, that is all the character can think about.

The character has given up is in the evidence of “Wailed to and fro”. Wailed to and fro means a high cry of angry and sorrow. The poem ends there meaning the character is unable move on from this and continues to always think the way he or she does now. If the character were to move on, the poem would not end like that but different.  If a person were to read the poem many time, he or she probably wouldn’t be able to get it.

Analyzing every part of the poem brought me to this conclusion, which shows that analyzing is very important in developing anything. Finding the definition is just one part of it. Identifying literary devices or tone is important as well. Is a lot of work but is important.
