The play From the works of John Leguizamo East Coast to East Los was written by Ramiro Segovia and streamed online via the East Los Angeles College Theatre’s website on May 21, 2021. The director teaches acting disciplines in the college, and the location of the performance is ELAC’s stages, and the drama is amateur. Before watching, I expected an eccentric play based on John Leguizamo’s famous one-person shows. Within the first ten minutes, I thought that I was at a solo show, yet the actor and the location changed, and then other characters joined the play. That turnout exceeded my expectations, and I enjoyed the personal stories shared as monologues in various settings.

From the works of John Leguizamo made me think of our perception of Latino people, their culture, and the challenges they face as immigrants in huge cities like New York. Although many jokes were rather dark and contained various biases about relationships between men and women that people are ashamed to admit, I laughed. The play might have left me cold as the subject matter does not match my life’s values, however, I was interested in how people of other cultures live among us. Besides, people having romances to get a Green Card caused an emotional response as it is unfair to treat love that way.

The play’s overall theme is to reveal Latino immigrants’ lives in the United States and show how the struggles such families face shaping their values. It successfully communicated the play’s theme because exploring culture and challenges through personal stories is effective. The production and play were good because the actors’ moods and characters were relevant to the subject and performed in a powerfully emotional manner.

The actors created believable characterizations because of their tones, usage of English and Spanish languages, and performing emotionally while telling their stories. They changed voices, moved, and showed various gestures so professionally that although only one person was at a setting at a time, the play still was highly engaging. For example, a schoolboy describing his family used various tones, two languages and made me feel sorry for his tough life.

To me, the most convincing play was Manny the Fanny, a Latino streetwalker standing next to a club in a suburb. The character was portrayed in various details like frequent tone changes, rapid movements, and low-level jokes. The least convincing to me was a theatre student because the actor’s personality intervened in a character’s portrayal even though his gestures and voice changes were expressive. Playing with accents was difficult, and as a director, I would emphasize only the appearance necessary to play Englishmen. The actors clearly communicated the idea through performance, and each could tailor the message of Latino immigrant’s life difficulties.

My response to the acting was not solely intellectual because watching a person telling you a story looking in your eyes cannot leave you emotionless. I could not separate actors from their characters, and I did not want to do it. Although the people were separated by the acts, the characters were united by the culture they were supposed to share. Regardless of their real belonging to Latino immigrants, they created a believable world of the play. Their accents, frequent usage of Spanish, emotional gestures, and locations were appropriate to the time described in the plot.

The production considered essential details such as set design and costumes to separate characters and tell more about them. For instance, Gladyz from a laundry dressed in a hyperbolic manner revealed how Latino women are perceived in the United States. The technical details such as lighting, sounds, and camera frame were crucial for the play as they made it believable and entertaining. Indeed, different lights for each set were critical to helping the audience keep watching and not feel tired. The traditional Latina music theme played between the stories was a funny addition and created the appropriate atmosphere. The camera and various frame angles shared the characters’ moods and made the play visually appealing.

The Phoenix Hospital’s Workload-Shifting Strategy

Introduction

The chosen strategy is to make Phoenix Hospital the preferred hospital in Hanover County by employees and consumers by reducing the workload for the nursing department. This strategy can solve several problems of the hospital at once, since the hospital’s costs have increased significantly recently, which affects the economic condition of the hospital. Raising salaries or hiring more staff could lead to a significant crisis for the hospital. Because of this, the decision to improve the working conditions is made taking into account the existing weaknesses of the hospital, as well as the possibilities for restructuring work responsibilities and schedules. Nursing staff work long hours, receive low salaries and are considering moving to other clinics.

Strategy Execution Recommendations

The strategy is to offload the responsibilities of nurses. Thus, part of the work can be transferred to other employees of the Phoenix Hospital, without loss of quality. With the future performance of part of the work duties by other employees of the hospital, nurses will not have to work long hours, since their number of tasks will decrease. For the correct unloading of the nursing department, so as not to overload other departments, a full analysis of the work duties and tasks of each hospital employee must be carried out. Those employees should be identified who are less loaded with work than the norm and who can perform the same duties that are performed by nurses.

The distribution should be gradual among employees. If the analysis reveals that all hospital staff are working to the maximum, the best option would be to hire students for internships who can perform simple nursing duties. For medical students, internships are often a compulsory part of their studies. Moreover, internships are either paid below the standard rate, or not paid at all. Thus, it will not bring additional financial costs to the hospital.

Employee and Customer Satisfaction Impacts

By unloading the nurses, the hospital will gain more efficiency in their work. Employee satisfaction directly affects the quality and productivity of work (Ali & Anwar, 2021). In addition, such actions on the part of the employer can lead to greater loyalty of the company’s employees, which will increase the retention rate. The quality of the hospital staff performance also affects the level of satisfaction of hospital clients who meet with nursing services on a daily basis. Customer satisfaction, in turn, directly affects the profit and reputation of the hospital, which is also an important component of its continued success.

Financial Impacts

Attracting new employees is always more expensive for a business than retaining old ones. The hospital will not incur additional financial costs in connection with the recruitment of new employees or an increase in salaries. Thus, developing a strategy to retain nurses in the hospital and increase their job satisfaction can be profitable. In an unstable economic situation, such strategies that address several weak points in the hospital at once can be decisive for the continued success of the Phoenix Hospital.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a workload-shifting strategy has a direct effect on employee and client satisfaction, and the hospital’s economic situation. The strategy is to analyze the workload of employees and transfer some of the responsibilities of the nursing department, which is now reloaded, to other employees. The analysis showed that such a redistribution is beneficial for the Phoenix Hospital and can close several of its weaknesses at once.

Themes, Imagery, And Diction Of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18

“Sonnet 18” of Shakespeare belongs to the group of poems addressed by the author to Pure Youth, the embodiment of the beauty of features, the clarity of the soul of a young man. The addressee of this poem is the very embodiment of youth and beauty, the combination of which constitutes the theme of the sonnet. From here the poet draws on a grandiose set of philosophical images of the seasons and natural phenomena. Youth for Shakespeare is something as majestic as a natural phenomenon and something with the same deep philosophical significance. In this poem, the author uses bright and vivid natural imagery. Through comparing a person with a natural phenomenon, he makes an attempt at a detailed praise for the beauty of youth, which overcomes aging and even death.

The poem analyzed in this work is a classic example of the traditional form of poetic expression that dominated the literature of the late Renaissance. The sonnet form of the poem, in this case, obviously works in interaction with the thought that the poet consistently conveys (Quackenbush et al. 234). His great mastery of form and diction gives a special dynamic to the reasoning presented in the poem. The specificity of a sonnet as a special poetic form is often considered to be a witty statement of an idea or a detailed compliment (Runsdorf 235). The stylistic feature of the sonnet, expressed through diction, imagery and range of themes, is the striving for a logical conclusion and the most artistic and clear expression of thought. This poem contains at the heart of its composition a rhetorical turn, ingeniously giving comparison in an unexpected and unobtrusive way (Moll 139). Having suggested a comparison of the beauty of a young man with a summer day, Shakespeare unfolds this reasoning, placing human beauty higher than natural, as more charming and at the same time modest.

Youth in this sonnet is extensively compared with summer time. However, nature, like everything earthly, is doomed to decay, since the laws of nature doom absolutely everything to change. Thus, towards its middle, the sonnet passes to the rhetorical phase of doubt, a melancholic experience associated with a presentiment of finitude. However, the beauty described by Shakespeare also has a certain eternal quality that distinguishes it from nature. Shakespeare refers to Youth as a specific philosophical category of being. Changing youth ceases to be itself and is transformed into something else. But the beauty of Eternal Youth can never fade because it is constant and enduring.

Consequently, the third quatrain of this sonnet produces a kind of transformation of the sad conclusions from the previous semantic passage (Shakespeare 25). The beauty of youth for Shakespeare turns out to be eternal because it has a certain quality that surpasses time itself and the frailty of being. Beauty is even able to overcome death, which may be subject to the human body, youth, but not Eternal Beauty as a kind of idea that can withstand the test of time.

Beauty, as the last two lines of the sonnet emphasize, is in the eye of the beholder. Therefore, in Shakespeare’s poem, as long as people are alive and as long as they are given the gift of sight, that is, the possibility of aesthetic evaluation, beauty remains eternal and unquenchable. This sonnet as a whole expresses a deep understanding of beauty and at the same time contains a desire and a call to people to be able to find and appreciate it.
