Impact Of Information Literacy On Safety Free Sample

In the digital age, information is pervasive, varied, and easily available, often being just a click away. However, the very fact that it is so ubiquitous and varied at the same time means that one needs skills to find relevant sources of information and evaluate their credibility and usefulness. This course shaped the understanding of information literacy not only in terms of improving specific skills in searching for and assessing sources but also by pointing out how it is relevant in specific professional fields.

Information literacy is particularly crucial today because due to the development ion information and communication technology (ICT), data is produced at an unprecedented pace. As a result, there is often too much data to find and extract the necessary information without a proper understanding of how to do it swiftly en efficiently. Web search systems provide access to only a fraction of knowledge on a given subject, as the rest is usually locked behind the paywalls, but it is already enough to be overwhelming (Yavapai College, 2011). In contrast, the person with sufficient literary skills will know how to use the databases most suited for finding precise and up-to-date credible information on a given subject (Yavapai College, 2011). Thus, without information literacy, it is nearly impossible to orient in the contemporary data landscapes.

Moreover, while useful for everyone, in general, information literacy skills are also particularly crucial for academic and professional success. It is all the more relevant because different academic disciplines and professional fields have characteristic modes of information generation and distribution. For example, HR & Safety ultimately belongs to the field of social sciences, which focus on the study of social interactions rather than human constructs or natural phenomena (Lanning, 2017). In this field, journals are the most important type of sources to look for the latest developments (Lanning, 2017). This kind of publishing literacy is essential for keeping up with the new developments in one’s chosen area of specialization.

This module’s resources have positively impacted the development of information literacy skills in several aspects simultaneously. To begin with, it clarified that information literacy is not merely a set of standardized skills but an “interconnected group of understandings” (Brooks et al., 2021, p. 278). Additionally, it emphasized the distinction between primary, secondary, and tertiary sources (“Exploring Types of Sources,” n.d.). Finally, it also raised the awareness of library databases as the tools for information search combining greater flexibility than many Web search engines with an emphasis on mostly credible sources (“Shapiro Library,” 2021). For example, navigating a database is a skill, but the understanding of which database would be better suited for which particular purpose is the true mark of information literacy.

Among the specific resources used in this course, Chapter 2 from Lanning (2017) was the most impactful in terms of developing information literacy. It was particularly useful in offering a standardized yet flexible model of information search from an initial inquiry to formulating the research question and identifying appropriate sources (Lanning, 2017). Thus, it not only aided in building specific skills related to searching for information but also provided an overall framework for it.

To summarize, information literacy is positively crucial for success in the contemporary world. It allows effectively searching for credible and useful information among the increasing volumes of data and is particularly useful for academic and professional success. This course has a positive impact on information literacy by developing specific skills, such as database search and sources classification, while also providing general frameworks for working with information.

Aspirin: Vascular Pharmacology

Aspirin is one of the most used medications worldwide, with its history going all the way back to 1897. It is a plant-based drug made out of salicylic acid, which can be found in Willow, scientifically known as Salix. Aspirin was originally intended as an anti-inflammatory drug but is currently also used to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (Montinari, Minelli & De Caterina, 2019). It is made in laboratory conditions, with the plant-sourced salicylic acid acting as a part of the chemical synthesis.

Currently, the production of aspirin is commercialized, and the drug can be bought in many forms, ranging from the simplest generic capsules to fizzy pills advertised as a hangover remedy. As an anti-inflammatory medicine and pain relief, aspirin has multiple substitutes, including ibuprofen and paracetamol. Few of the widely available drugs, however, can compare to it in the variety of possible applications, especially considering the latest research in aspirin use for cancer treatment and prevention (Montinari, Minelli & De Caterina, 2019). Aspirin remains one of the most successful examples of the use of plant components in medicine.

Invented in its semi-modern form at the end of the 19th century, aspirin was a part of the medical revolution in the late industrial period. But the history of using salicylic acid for pain relief can be traced back to Ancient Greece and the physician Hippocrates. I find its status of one of the first effectively life-saving drugs to be the fascinating piece of information about said product. Even if drugs or plant-based products in other fields outshine its effectiveness in the future, the history of aspirin and its newest applications in cancer treatment are extremely impressive.

Traumatic Impacts Of Community Violence, COVID-19, And Civil Unrest In Immigrant Families

The presentation is dedicated to the impact of community violence, structural racism, COVID-19, and community violence on immigrant and marginalized mixed-status families. Changes in federal immigration policies have led to increasing enforcement, reducing access to public benefits for immigrants, and removing their legal protection and their qualification for a different status. These changes lead to the development of the-racial trauma, defined as a particular type of distress experienced by a substantial number of people of color and marginalized individuals while living in a sexist, racist, and classist society (“Traumatic impacts of community violence, COVID-19, and civil unrest on immigrant families,” n.d.). Young children who live in mixed-status families where one parent or both of them are undocumented are particularly vulnerable to ethno-racial trauma due to social violence and structural inequities.

Threats for children from mixed-status families that have a highly negative and traumatic impact on their mental health include confusion, potential family separation, and the risk of parents’ detention and deportation. Traumatic stress for them is also determined by family rupture, community fragmentation, and political and social violence. In the United States, 7 million children live in mixed-status families – 4,9 million of them were born in the country, and 775,000 are undocumented (“Traumatic impacts of community violence, COVID-19, and civil unrest on immigrant families,” n.d.). During the COVID-19 pandemic, these families are the most socially unprotected as their access to public benefits and governmental services is substantially limited.

The presentation introduces the term syndemic as a particular model of health that includes complex biosocial elements: COVID-19, structural inequities, ethnic-racial violence, and immigration policy enforcement. As a response, radical healing should be allied when working with social and community violence in immigrant communities to promote their safe and respectful life. The components of radical healing include critical consciousness, collectivism, strength and resistance, self-knowledge and cultural authenticity, and radical hope. Support of immigrant and mixed-status families implies the increase in availability and accessibility of government services and the reduction of barriers to accessing vital resources.

For refugees, mixed-status families, and immigrants, traumatic experience is connected with community violence, poverty, hunger, political, cultural, social, and racial persecution, and targeted identity and beliefs. In addition, internal drug policy enforcement has led to discrimination against minority communities. At the same time, young people from immigrant families have a great potential for accommodation and acculturation due to family and community support, multilingual capacity, coping strategies, and resourcefulness. At the same time, adolescents from minority families that immigrated a long time ago are particularly vulnerable to increased substance, drug, and alcohol use during the pandemic. There are multiple reasons for it, including COVID-19-related distress, the impact of isolation, cyberbullying, mental health issues, structural inequities and racism, economic challenges, disrupted family support networks, and childcare policies.

Activating solutions to prevent increased drug, alcohol, and substance abuse among adolescents should include universal screening to detect trauma, adversity, and distress. All risk factors that contribute to inequities should be eliminated, while protective factors should be strengthened to encourage the establishment and development of positive cultural identity (“Traumatic impacts of community violence, COVID-19, and civil unrest on immigrant families,” n.d.). Finally, adolescents should be provided with access to all essential services to promote health and health-seeking behaviors. All in all, the presentation not only educates but forces people to review their social beliefs and contribute to the elimination of community violence.
