Internal Conflict In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” Character Analysis Sample Paper

            The conflict in the plot of a story makes it or breaks it. It is what makes a work of fiction such as a short story or a novel interesting or boring. It is the part of the plot which causes the readers to be excited in knowing what becomes of the characters at the end of the story. The conflict can either be external which means a struggle between two individuals or it can be internal which refers to a struggle of a character within himself or herself caused by conflicting emotions and thoughts. Hence, the internal conflict within the mother and her son, Paul which is present in the short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence makes reading it worthwhile because of the universal themes on parenting and on the negative effects of greediness and materialistic obsession.

            First, the internal conflict in the mother shows how parents have become passive in their parenting and have become more concerned with materialistic needs rather than with their children’s emotional and psychological needs. This is evident in these lines: “She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them…when her children were present … she was all the more gentle and anxious for her children, as if she loved them very much.” (Lawrence, 1926) These thoughts of the mother reveal that she does not really love her children and she feels that she became a mother without any choice. This condition of her heart made her passive and unconcerned with her children’s psychological needs. Consequently, she becomes more materialistic as she thinks: “Her children were growing up, they would have to go to school. There must be more money, there must be more money.” (Lawrence, 1926) These thoughts dictated her actions in the story as she leaves her children to go to work and earn money. And even when she was given money during her birthday by an anonymous relative who was actually her son, she spent the “whole five thousand” on “new furnishings” and many other things and she wanted to get even more money. Consequently, she has become greedy because of her materialism that she did not even think about what is happening to her son who has caused her to enjoy all that she wanted.

            Second, the internal conflict in Paul demonstrates the negative effects of a parent’s obsession to become lucky and have more money to a young child like him. Paul thought of wanting to be lucky after his mother told him: “If you’re lucky you have money. That’s why it’s better to be born lucky than rich. If you’re rich, you may lose your money. But if you’re lucky, you will always get more money.” (Lawrence, 1926) Because of this, Paul went to search out for luck in his own childish way by riding furiously on his rocking horse. But, what he is actually doing in secret is placing his bets on horse racing with the help of Basset. He is able to get thousands of pounds yet he wanted to get more money from gambling when he heard “the voices in the house… There must be more money!.. Now-w-w- there must be more money! – more than ever!” (Lawrence, 1926) This made him try harder “to get to know” what horse will win in the races until he becomes “wide-eyed”. Eventually, this obsession caused him to ride furiously in his rocking-horse one night which caused his illness and his death. Thus, his parents’ passive concern and materialistic obsession lead to his obsession in gambling and his death.

            In conclusion, the struggles and internal conflict of each character such as the mother and Paul are unsaid and unknown yet these conflicting thoughts and feelings manifested through each character’s actions that somehow affected one another. Hence, it is the internal conflict of the characters that creates the development and progress of the story. It is what makes the characters do what they do in the story which leads to the ending. The internal conflict also revealed to the readers the recurring themes of the importance of parenting and the negative effects of greed and materialism. Indeed, it is conflict that makes or breaks the story.

The Company chosen by me to explain the internal equity and external competitiveness in an organization is Binovia Informatics and Biomedical ( Binovia.com). This company is a pioneer in its field and enjoys a credible reputation amongst its customers and competitors alike. The company is engaged in the business of informatics, biomedical services and integrated solutions, and boasts of an enviable HR structure that imbibes the latest and most effective techniques to retain and take care of its staff in a way that over the past several years there have been very few people leaving the organization in search of better avenues and opportunities.

The Company takes credible care of the compensation package of the staff that includes other than salary and wages, lucrative performance based bonuses as also long term incentives, health insurance, life and personal accident insurance, retirement plans and other miscellaneous compensation. The organizational hierarchy of the company is such that the internal equity method is undertaken in true spirit that balances the compensation amongst junior and senior level executives and fairness to all is guaranteed by using job ranking, job classification, management levels, and factor comparison. Consequently all employees are a satisfied lot and contribute a great deal to the well being and profitability of the Company which adds to the strength of the company in terms of its competition with other companies.

The Company has been very particular in formulating its compensation package keeping in view the external equities and competition, that necessitates doing market pricing analysis of compensation strategies keeping in view prevailing industry standards. The company has always strived to give fair treatment to its people by aligning compensation packages that are higher than current market trends so that no one becomes disgruntled. This way the Company has succeeded in retaining the best talent thus giving it an upper edge over its competitors.

A major reason for the consistent success of Binovia Informatics and Biomedical is its policy of taking care of its people in a way that is much better than industry standards.

Internal Proposal In Letter Format

The mission of Phoenix Advertising Agency is derived from the presentation of the best and most excellent creative services all over the country to all our dear clients. This can goal can achieved by grasping the essence of our core company values for dedication, integrity and personalized clientele service. More so, we ensure that the standards and goals set by the company are passed down the four branches to establish a unified and solid advertising company.

For the fourth quarter of this business year, the executive team had noticed the dwindling performance and manpower of Roanoke branch. To get a clearer picture of the real situation at the branch, I, Vice-President for Human Resources, I was tasked to prepare a plan on how tackle and resolve the issues of the mentioned branch.

Clients have complained about the unsatisfactory outputs of the Roanoke, Virginia branch of the agency. This situation can be attributed to the recent resignation of two of the top management people in the branch which are the Art Director and the Account Executive. To make matters worse, three graphic designers and four copywriters are threatening to quit their posts because they feel that their creative efforts are being rejected or revised without prior consultation from the top management.

To resolve this issue, the Branch Director has accepted new clients without evaluating the possible detrimental effects of the new accounts on the current project workload. Because of the need to cater to all the needs of the clients, all employees are mandated to work long hours each day of the week without any financial compensation. As a result, employees’ attrition rate is climbing and the productivity level is decreasing every single day. Furthermore, the Roanoke, Virginia branch handles one of the agency’s vital accounts and valuable clients

To advance this objective, I have visited Roanoke branch last August and conducted a field investigation regarding the problems that the branch has been experiencing for the past few months. The purpose of my visit was to assess the outputs and services rendered by Roanoke branch for the last two quarters. Also, I carried out an investigation regarding the recent human resource problems that have negatively affected the productivity of most of the employees.

To ensure the quality of the outputs of Phoenix Advertising Agency, I propose the following plan for Roanoke branch:

  • Motivation. This is the key in encouraging employees to perform better with regards to their respective duties. If all employees are highly motivated, the productivity rate of the branch will also increase.
  • Communication. This is the key in eliminating misunderstanding and misinterpretation which will lessen the occurrence of conflict within the workplace. If all employees get along together well, the possibility of producing high-quality outputs is very high.
  • Compensations. This will help make the employees feel that their contributions to the company are being well-compensated. Monetary compensations for overtime and additional tasks will reward all the hard work of the employees.
  • Recruitment. This procedure will help fill vital positions that have been vacated in order to give direction to the path that the teams will take in order to yield high-quality outputs and restore the confidence of the clients to Roanoke branch.

The recruitment should be immediately implemented before the end of 2008. A month will be allotted for the Branch director to employ personnel who are capable of doing the tasks at hand.  There will be an internal hiring within the branch and external hiring to recruit fresh competent professionals.

Harry Cartier is the Roanoke Branch Director. He will be supervising that all the objectives of the plan are met. He had been the branch director of the Roanoke Branch for almost two years. More so, he had received an excellence award from Phoenix Advertising Agency headquarters for having the most productive and profitable branch in 2007.

To assist the Branch Director in drafting and implementing the new regulations would be the five team leaders, Brendan Fraser, Jason Walsh, Kelly Taylor, Dylan Thomas and Randy Jackson. All of them have been with the company for two to five years giving them ample knowledge about the complexities and difficulties of the branch operations.

As the Vice-president for Human Resources, I will be in charge of revising the compensations and benefits packages of the employees of Roanoke branch in accordance to their current needs.

Phoenix Advertising Agency has been in the advertising business for almost ten years. In these long fruitful years, we have shown our excellence in our craft and our professionalism in providing the best service for our world-renowned clientele. Even though the company had experienced a few setbacks in the recent quarters at the Roanoke branch due to human resource problems, the resurgence of Roanoke employees from this drawback can be guaranteed if all the recommendations are implemented in the soonest time possible.

The proposed plan is directed in bringing back the distinction and prestige that Phoenix Advertising Agency Roanoke Branch had once boasted. Though the tainted reputation of the Roanoke branch have been only been realized by a few clients, there is still room to reverse this bad publicity. By empowering the employees and appreciating their outputs, there will be a significant increase in productivity thus it will also increase the revenue for the whole company and at the same time it will boost up the excellence associated with the name of Phoenix Advertising Agency.

Having part in the formulation of the solutions for the problems at Roanoke branch is a truly an honor for me. I appreciate the opportunity and the people who helped make this field investigation a success. I am very positive that this proposal will yield productive outcomes for the Roanoke branch and the whole company. In relation t this, I expect that this proposal will be approved by November 22 in order to prevent the occurrence of new problems as well as the degeneration of the current situation.
