Leader’s Shadow And Leadership Talent Essay Sample For College

Introduction

In my life, I have been on the lookout for an incomparable leader to shadow. One day I went shopping at one of the outlets of Mac’s Convenience Store where I met the store manager, Ramesh Thuong. From then on, I became very fond of him since any time I went to the shop; I had to chat with him for some time. Because I had befriended him, he quickly agreed when I told him that I wanted to shadow him during one of the peak seasons in the store’s operations and consequently write about him. Mac’s Convenience Store is the largest convenience store operator in Canada with many other stores in the U.S. (“About us”). Ramesh takes care of one of the busiest stores in this chain, which is evidence of his great leadership skills.

Ramesh’s philosophy

In my conversation with Ramesh, I discovered his philosophy. In influencing his subordinates to accomplish the company’s objectives, he sets the right example for them to follow. He believes that actions depict true leadership and not mere words. His actions are evident in the way he assigns the employees various duties. He assigns them based on the qualification that enables them to perform effectively the tasks given. In case an employee has been stuck while performing a duty, he makes every attempt to ensure that the employee gets through by offering his assistance. Ramesh’s leadership by example is an inspiration to his colleagues who always learn from his ways. In the period that I was shadowing Ramesh, I noticed that he followed up his philosophy by practicing servant leadership.

He devoted himself to serving the interests of the company. In several instances, employees could come to him seeking clarification about some urgent issues they were facing. He did not throw them away but faithfully attended to the concerns of every one of them. A good leader is indeed made, not born. Ramesh had developed his leadership skills through a thorough method of self-study, learning, training, and experience. Ramesh had a humble beginning as a cashier at Mac’s store. He was then elevated to the position of a marketing manager for about eighteen months. Through doing a lot of self-study, he soon became experienced with the various in-house practices. Because of his exemplary skills in leadership, he got a promotion to the position of store manager.

Ramesh leadership roles

During the time that I was shadowing Ramesh, several leadership qualities stood out. I noticed that he communicated effectively when he was addressing his subordinates. I asked him why he is concerned so much about effective communication. He reminded me that in any organization, communication is important since without it little can be achieved. Ramesh uses communication to state clearly the goals of the company; therefore, everyone has always felt involved in the running of the store.

To demonstrate good leadership qualities, one has to develop respect for himself or herself and respect for his or her colleagues. Respect is reciprocal since if a leader lacks respect, he or she cannot command a following. Ramesh recognizes the significance of this principle. He relates to all of his staff equally not considering their backgrounds. He regards the place of work as a professional environment and he has never been disrespectful to anyone. Occasionally, I could leave him to go and interact freely with the company staff. I found out that he had a great following because the staff members equally respect him.

Big dreams rarely become a reality through the efforts of one single person since it requires a team effort, solid trust, and strong relationships. Moreover, it needs deep competence and cool confidence, group collaboration, and lastly immense individual accountability. In having extraordinary things accomplished at Mac’s store, Ramesh always enabled others to act. I realized that he was on the road to becoming a good leader by the way he addresses his subordinates. I noticed that he frequently used the word we nearly three times more often than he uses the word I. In doing this, his subordinates responded more enthusiastically and his team became more cohesive when they realized that they were part of us. Ramesh recommended to me to use this magic word more often to make things turn around.

Ramesh fosters collaboration and the building of trust among the staff members. He adheres to this sense of teamwork by going far beyond a few direct reports or close confidants. He engages all the people who are working at the store. He does not restrict operations to a small group of loyalists, but he includes all those who have a stake in the vision of Mac’s store. In the team, he encourages everyone to be committed to responsibility. He usually reminds the team members that it is better to fail to accept a responsibility than to accept one and deliver poor results. This has earned him credibility in the business cycles.

For the whole period that I had been shadowing Ramesh, I noticed that he was strict in keeping time. I asked him about this. He told me that time in the store is constant and irreversible and nothing can be substituted for it since any moment wasted can never be regained. He developed workable time management techniques that ensured that everything around him moves as though on a timer. He regards time as of essence since it keeps getting away and no one is capable of changing it to suit his or her needs. Therefore, Ramesh managed time efficiently to be an efficient manager.

Conclusion

All through my shadowing activity that lasted close to ten hours, I learned one important lesson. The leadership talent that Ramesh possesses illustrates that anybody is capable of becoming a leader. It all depends on the dedication that one puts in making this dream become a reality. Ramesh was not born a manager, but he painstakingly made his way to the top. He capitalized on every available opportunity to sharpen his leadership skills. In his current position, he dedicates a great deal of time and energy to the fulfillment of the goals of Mac’s store. This shadowing experience has enabled me to realize that I also have a leadership potential that when properly nurtured can bring great benefits. I have recognized that if I believe in myself, I can be able to fulfill my ambitions. In the meantime, I have to provide direction and support to my peers especially during uncertain times, utilize fully my leadership talents and strive to set a positive example of what honesty and ethics mean in my daily life.

Samuel Johnson’s “Rambler #5” And “Idler #31”

“Idler #31”

Samuel Johnson revealed his ideas on idle people and the nature of idleness in his essay “Idler #31”. The author contemplates the essence of idleness. First, Johnson depicts an idler who buries him/herself in the complete darkness. One could understand Johnson’s words literally, but the author does not leave such a chance as he proceeds with a kind of interpretation of his ideas on idleness. Johnson states that idleness is not simply staying in bed, but idleness is the inability to act and develop. The author reveals a very important idea that “nobody is busy to censure or detect it” as idleness is often covert (Johnson 2678).

Thus, Johnson introduces his “old friend Sober” (2679). The author notes that Mr. Sober is not seen as an idle man as he is always busy with some affairs. Mr. Sober tries to find something by carrying out various experiments. However, Johnson claims that this is the true idleness as no one needs experiments held by Mr. Sober. No one can find Mr. Sober’s words and viewpoints useful. He is seemingly active, though he does not do anything worthy.

“Rambler #5”

Another Johnson’s essay “Rambler #5” dwells upon people’s life. This essay is very didactic as many other writings by the writer. Here Johnson contemplates one of the people’s characteristic features, i.e. dissatisfaction. The writer states that people are always dissatisfied and even if they get what they want they manage to find various things to be discontent about. Johnson reveals a man’s secret of being satisfied by “referring the removal of all his uneasiness to the coming of the next spring” (2675).

The writer expresses his fascination with this season. The writer contemplates the diversity of nature, and he also stresses that there should be some diversity among people. At the end of the essay, the writer states that people should remember that beauty of spring flowers is only certain preparation for autumnal fruit. Thus, it becomes clear that the essays are not only about nature, it is also about youth which is the period when people should be delighted with new experiences, and they should never forget about gaining knowledge which will become the basis of their maturity.

Idlers Are Among Us

Notably, though the two essays touch upon very important ideas, I would like to focus on the essay “Idler #31”. I agree with Johnson in every point made. I have also noticed that some people only seem to do something important while they simply waste other people’s (and their own) time. Many people try to occupy themselves with some things which are ‘convenient’, i.e. the things which do not require much effort. These people choose the easiest path which leads nowhere.

Unfortunately, there are too many idlers in our world (in every society). What is more, idleness is quite difficult to detect. Johnson is right in claiming that idleness is often disregarded by people who usually focus on ‘overt’ vices. However, idleness is a dangerous sin that can spread quickly. Johnson calls to attention. I agree that people should be more attentive to each other, and, more importantly, they must be more attentive to themselves. It is essential to make sure idleness has not penetrated one’s life. It is important to look for new ways and choose paths that require a lot of attention and courage. This is the only way to live to avoid idleness in one’s life. Eventually, if everyone is attentive and active enough, idleness can be driven away from all societies.

Happy Life: Critical Thinking And Ethics

If we are to live our life in harmony with nature, what qualities must our mind have?

Seneca admits that if people want to live a life in a harmony with nature, it is necessary for a human mind to have and develop several qualities. Soundness, sanity, courage, moral energy, and the ability to define the advantages “that adorn life” and remain to be not a slave, but the user “of the gifts of fortune” (Seneca, 2015, p. 477) are these main qualities. It is not an easy task to live in harmony with nature because it is necessary to live according to virtue. People should have a mind that can understand the standards and use the above-mentioned qualities in order to realize what virtue actually means and how it may define the quality and the whole essence of this life.

What is the only true good? The only true evil?

Seneca is one of the philosophers, whose attempts to define the peculiarities of the true good and the true evil are successful indeed. In addition to the explanations, he offers some examples to explain a true worth of his words. For example, the true good, or “the highest good” is introduced as “a mind that scorns the happenings of chance and rejoices only in virtue” (Seneca, 2015, p. 477). Seneca believes that the only true good is that portion of virtue that provides a person with a sense of living. At the same time, Seneca does not pay much attention to the definition of the true evil. He just underlines that the absence of virtue is not good. The true evil may be everything free from virtue.

How is pleasure related to virtue?

Seneca writes about the connection that exists between pleasure and virtue. In fact, the way of how these two concepts are related is rather controversial. Both, pleasure and virtue are the components of the concept of happiness. However, Seneca offers to believe that happiness can be attained through virtue but not through pleasure. In other words, the relation between virtue and pleasure lies in their counter positions in regards to the idea of happiness. In fact, the life is full of pleasures and virtue. It is hard for a person to be happy without any of these concepts. At the same time, it is necessary to remember that one concept is good, and another is evil, and a person is free to decide what kind of life he/she wants to get.

Why is it a blunder to ask why we should seek virtue?

Some people still want to know why they have to seek for virtue, and Seneca explains that this kind of request as a kind of a blunder due to the virtue’s essence. The point is that virtue is already a pick of everything in this life. And it is wrong or even impossible to believe that something more can be achieved. This is why people have to understand that their attempts to achieve virtue should become the main goal in a life that promotes sense and happiness.

Why does the wise person prefer having riches to not having them? When we have riches, what attitude should we take toward them?

Discussing happiness and riches, Seneca mentions that a wise man has a chance to be happy even without riches; still, he prefers to have some. Such attitude to riches can be easily explained: riches become a serious underground for a person’s development and happiness. Any person has more chances to be happy and successful if some material values are present in the life and do not cause any emotions or feeling. A person needs some guarantee that something material is present in the life.
