Liberal And Conservative Political Impact On Media Sample Assignment

It is impossible to imagine the modern world without mass media. Moreover, the press rule over human minds: its power is so great that it can program the entire country to specific thoughts. The confrontation between adherents of conservative and liberal values has been going on for a long time. There were many examples when journalists were biased against a black person due to racial prejudice. I think one of the primary examples is the story of George Floyd. But there are also many cases when a person of the white race and conservative views was “awarded” the status of a racist. The confrontation in the political arena is especially noticeable. Liberals argue that public order spontaneously arises from the freedom of action of individuals. At the same time, conservatives believe that public order is paramount and creates the conditions for release. They refer to the influence of the family, church, traditions, and local associations to control changes, slowing them down.

The media in the United States are mainly controlled by a small number of large corporations, which the government rules. As with all corporations, power belongs to a few people at the top. Journalists are just employees who can be hired and fired. The promotion of radical or contradictory views can irritate those in power. That is why corporations do not need journalists who are troublemakers or whistleblowers. Presenters and journalists quickly realize that media owners will not tolerate certain types of critical stories.

Furthermore, insiders in the American media have admitted that they refuse controversial stories that may hurt their employees. Those critical of big business and the government’s foreign policy will not get into the best positions in mainstream news programs. In addition, it will be difficult for them to find work in major newspapers. A famous example of this was when the host of the American TV channel MSNBC, Phil Donahue, criticized the war in Iraq in 2003 and was quickly dismissed. MSNBC is owned by General Electric, one of the most giant US arms manufacturing companies.

There is one prevalent myth: most American media are left-liberal and have always been against Trump. Moreover, national-scale TV companies, such as CNN, CBS, NBC, and so on, only Fox News promotes a right-wing conservative ideology and supports Trump. However, in addition to large television companies, there are many local TV studios. Therefore, local news is watched by about ten times more people than national channels.

In the first two charts, the viewers’ number is from two to three million. In the third figure, there are about 12 million viewers in the morning and in and about 23 million in the evening (Pew Research Center, 2016). The largest company that owns hundreds of local TV channels is called Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBG). She became famous for holding extreme right-wing conservative views and recently supporting Trump. But the most important thing is that in contracts with other TV companies usually include a clause called “must-run.” Therefore, a TV company that has signed such a contract must insert those stories into its programs. As a result, SBG has become the mouthpiece of pro-Trump propaganda, so no wonder SBG was called Trump TV.

Several other examples of pro-Trump propaganda attract attention with their biased attitude toward the media. In the video, Boris Epstein, who now works as the chief political analyst of SBG, and before that, was an adviser to Trump during the election campaign, criticizes the American press in the White House and calls their actions “theater” (Your Voice, Your Future Town Hall Series, 2017). Because of this, they had a conflict with a local channel called KOMO TV, based in Washington state. Even though the track is considered liberal, they are forced to obey the rules prescribed in the contract with SBG. The journalists of this channel complained that they were forced to broadcast programs about the deep government.

The proof of the pro-Trump propaganda is another rather revealing situation. In different parts of the United States, almost simultaneously, letter by letter, the hosts of SBG TV channels read out the exact text on behalf of KOMO TV, very similar to Trump’s propaganda about “fake news”: “Our greatest responsibility is to serve our Northwest communities. We are extremely proud of the quality, balanced journalism that KOMO News produces, but we’re concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country. Sharing biased and false news has become too common on social media. More alarming, some media outlets publish these fake stories … stories that aren’t true, without checking facts first…” (Dessem, 2018). The trademarks of various TV companies that read this text are circled red in the pictures (Think Progress, 2018). As a result, the SBG was forced to read the exact text to both the “right” and “left”.

Trump, who became president, generously thanked SBG. His administration has made and is still going to make significant takeover deals. First, SBG bought a network of television stations called Bonten Media Group, and now an agreement to acquire a network called Tribune Media is still in question. An idea of how this deal will affect SBG can be obtained from this infographic (Pew Research Center, 2016). The graphs illustrate that SBG was present in 42 states before the takeover, but in the future, it will be in 46. Previously, 40% of families watched the TV channel, but now the number will increase to 72%. Such a percentage probably falls under the antimonopoly legislation, but they stubbornly turn a blind eye to it (Pew Research Center, 2016). Thus, Trump’s moral victory in the election comes into question.

By way of conclusion, the media should be objective and truthful. But we know that most of them serve the interests of different political forces. That is why to force the “masses” to look at the world from a certain point of view is a considerable power. In addition, achieving the objectivity of information may be hindered by other problems. One of the most important, according to the researchers, is that the objectivity of the data itself is not a guarantee of the neutrality of the publication since journalists can present it in a distorted form. Practical limitations of the detachment of the media include the lack of journalists’ ability to cover all the facts and stories. The influence of the government and censorship seriously affects the bias in the media. Therefore, this is a rather tricky question since the media profoundly influences people’s thinking. In addition, if we used to watch advertising and TV shows only on televisions, now the impact through the Internet and targeted advertising is becoming more and more popular.

“A Few Good Men” By Reiner

Are People Always Ready to Handle the Truth? – Many people believe that they need to and want to live a truthful life. Still, not all of them are actually ready to handle the truth and accept it as it is. The movie A Few Good Men directed by Rob Reiner is a good opportunity to learn how truth may influence and direct human lives and promote the development of interpersonal communication.

What Do People Know about Uncertainty, Self-Disclosure, Social Penetration? – These are the three main interpersonal concepts for discussion. Their essence may be understood through the movie.

Does the Military Stand for Justice? – The answer to this question should be given as soon as the movie as well as the concepts are discussed. People should know their rights, define their opportunities, and learn what to expect from those, who are protecting them.

Interpersonal Concepts and Their Role in Human Lives

Experts define interpersonal communication (IC) as a type of interactions that take place between two or more people, who may share a relationship, and aim at sharing and receiving information (Berko, Aitken, & Volvin, 2010). IC consists of a number of concepts, and the most crucial are social penetration by means of closeness’ development, self-disclosure that gives more information about a person, and uncertainty reduction throughout knowledge and abilities to listen.

Social penetration helps to develop a kind of relational closeness between different people. This concepts aims at discussing cultural, ethical, and other issues in order to find out the ideas that may unite people.

Self-disclosure is the concept that reveals information about a person. Berko et al. (2010) admit that “revealing a depth and breadth of yourself” provides people with an ability to “begin, maintain, and develop a relationship” (p. 222).

Uncertainty reduction makes it possible to predict what a person may do during the process of communication. This helpful concept is used by many people to develop thoughtful and interesting communicative process within a short period of time.

A Few Good Men and Its Ability to Show Actions through Words

A Few Good Men is a movie about honour, loyalty, and human abilities to survive following a number of rules and orders and meeting all the expectations. The connection between the interpersonal relations mentioned above and the ideas offered in the movie is obvious. The movie is about the military life and the necessity to obey the orders given. People want to believe that the army is the place, where orders and rules direct people.

However, they should also understand that all these directions should protect human rights, consider people’s ideals, and provide weaker people with protection if it is necessary. Self-disclosure is all about discovering the truth. One of the main ideas offered by Nathan Jessup (the character in the movie) is that people “can’t handle the truth” because they prefer to use such words like “honour, code, loyalty” as “the backbone of a life spent defending something” (Reiner, 1992). Finally, when the truth is discovered and the communication is developed, people may think about their duties and responsibilities upon the society. The last question takes place: “What did we do wrong?” (Reiner, 1992).

Conclusions

The attention to all these points is crucial for the life we live and the relations we try to develop. The movie helps to understand that the military people are the best examples of how interpersonal relations should be developed. Though people like Kaffee, Ross, or Weilnberg are not always ready for the truth, the movie teaches what they should do to become closer to the desirable truth. The evaluation of the lessons taken from the movie, skills, developed though the communication, and questions asked during the discussions is a good opportunity to become better and more helpful to the society we live in.

The Problem Of Overpopulation And Energy Scarcity

One of the main challenges for humanity in this century is the threat of overpopulation. The population is proliferating, and although environmental, geopolitical, and socioeconomic factors may be slowing this dynamic, growth remains evident. Along with population growth, the issue of providing for society’s increasing needs is becoming increasingly urgent. This essay focuses on providing energy supplies in which communities can use light, electricity, and heat to solve everyday problems.

The population is indeed proliferating, and this rate is different for each country. According to the World Bank, global population growth has been gradually declining since 1971, but numbers are still increasing (2021). By 2050, the global population is thought to surpass the 9.9 billion mark, and by the end of the century, the number will be 10.9 billion (Cilluffo & Ruiz, 2019). Among the countries contributing the most to population growth are the African regions and Central Asian countries. All that said, over time, the ability to provide safe, affordable, and valuable resources for everyone on the planet will become more complex.

The energy sector will be particularly affected by the lack of resources. In energy supply, the leading sources to generate light and heat are coal, natural gas, and oil. These materials are not endless, which means that the day will come when energy sources run out. It is authoritatively believed that oil could run out entirely by as early as 2060 (Howarth, 2019). If no additional measures are developed by then, the shortage of coal, gas, and oil will cause a worldwide crisis. Communities will not have enough resources to survive, probably leading to the most significant era of human extinction. The shortage of valuable resources will affect the relationship between countries, causing new waves of geopolitical wars and material competition. Thus, with the current agenda of mineral management and energy generation policies intact, it is safe to say that the future world will be in a state of energy crisis.

Already today, however, many laboratories and private companies are trying several strategies to minimize this risk. On the one hand, companies are trying to use resources more carefully and recycle them, which overall means wasting less energy. On the other hand, there are green fuel technologies that can recycle trash into valuable resources. One such innovation is biogas, which uses plant fuels to generate electricity, energy, and fertilizer. The essence of this technology is built on processing agricultural waste, whether it is organic garbage, fecal matter, rot, or weed, with the help of particular bacteria into a mixture of gases called biogas. Burning this substance produces a high yield of electricity and heat, and the organic residue from the garbage can be used as a special fertilizer for plants. In this way, the world can start the cycle of reusing garbage for energy. This, in turn, will take away the dependence on oil, gas, and coal as limited resources.

In conclusion, the problem of overpopulation of the earth is an essential threat to states because it creates the need for an adequate supply of affordable, safe raw materials for every individual. This threat seems even more urgent regarding the energy balance since oil, coal, and gas reserves are not infinite. It is believed that most precious fossils will be in short supply by mid-century, which can become a severe problem for the world. Investing in green technologies can solve this problem, such as biogas. The reuse of organic trash generates electricity, heat, and fertilizer, covering the dependence on the Earth’s limited resources.
