Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and served as governor from 1779 to 1781. Despite facing an investigation during his final year as governor, which was later discredited, he remained sensitive to criticism throughout his life. In 1784, he returned to public service as a trades commissioner and then became the minister after Benjamin Franklin. He accepted the position of secretary of state in 1790. In the 1796 election, he ran for president but narrowly lost to John Adams by three votes, making him vice president instead. During the 1800 election, Jefferson tied with Aaron Burr with both receiving 73 votes each. This led to thirty-five tie votes in the House of Representatives until James Bayard broke the deadlock by voting for Jefferson.
The United States’s third president was inaugurated.
Jefferson is renowned for being the first peaceful transfer of power in the United States. He collaborated with Congress to reform the government based on Republican principles, which prioritized liberty and land ownership as vital elements for nation-building. Jefferson utilized tactics such as trading, negotiating, debating, and making purchases to effectively achieve The Louisiana Purchase.
In 1806, Jefferson began building a new house in a well-known forest. Monticello underwent renovations from 1807 to 1824. In 1825, the University of Virginia was founded. Just one year later, Thomas Jefferson passed away at the age of 83. He had a long and influential life, leading his country with immense ambitions. Ultimately, he is revered as the U.S.’s greatest third president and left an indelible mark on our lives, nation, and history!

Tom And Lily Contrasted
The FinalEveryone in a story is bound to be a dynamic character for it to become more interesting. Samuel, Lily, and Tom were all filling this role as dynamic characters in these two stories. This essay of the stories Searching for Summer and A Son from America will be analyzed. They will first be explained in how Tom and Lily went to a Ms. Hatchings house, and also will speak of why Samuel went to America. The essay will explain the reasons for coming back and what some of their worries were about. Then last in this essay there will be a part on the similarities of the endings.
In the story Searching for Summer there was a man named Tom and a lady named Lily. They got married and then after that they went to look for a bit of sunshine. They got married and went a little trip to find that sunshine. They drove their scooter to look for this sunshine but on the way it broke down. It so happens that this scooter broke down in a little town of Molesworth. A man named Mr. Nokes greeted them who you could say came off them as a little different. He was nice enough though to offer a room to them until their scooter got fixed in his little pub that he owned. Tom and Lily instead found this purse that this lady had left there by an accident and went on to ask Mr. Nokes where bouts they would be able to find the owner. After Mr. Nokes told them where they could find Ms. Hatching’s house they were off to return the purse to this lady. When Tom and Lily finally came to Ms. Hatchings house where they gave the purse back to her and then Ms. Hatchings Son who was blind offered Tom and Lily to stay with them. Tom and Lily agreed to stay with the Hatchings and when Tom and Lily woke up the next morning they were amazed to see the sun shining high and bright. In A Son from America Samuel went to America at suck a young age because he wanted to make himself a better life then his parents and he also wanted a better life for his parents. He didn’t want to have to go out in the sun every day and work for long days and only have enough to make it by he wanted more. He went to America under the impression that he will be able to give back to his parents and be able to make there life easier by sending money to them so they wouldn’t have to work anymore and also so he could not have to work very hard either. This is why he is sending them money every month to his parents. Tom and Lily left Ms. Hatching’s house knowing that Mr. Nokes would come looking for them in the woods. So Tom and Lily left and returned to Molesworth and there Mr. Nokes asked them where they got there tan skin and they told him that they had ran into a friend far away where they were able to see the sun for a little bit. Then they go ton their scooter and drove away never mentioning the sun ever again to anyone.
The reason Samuel came back to his parent’s town is because he had been away from his family for a long time and wanted to check up on them. I believe that it had to be more then twenty years ago when he saw his parents. He went to his parents home thinking that they would be relaxing and enjoying life and not working and working for someone else and having to do those things normal people would have to do to survive. When Samuel got home they were so surprised because the letter that he had sent to them had never got there and so they had no idea that Samuel was coming home to visit. The similarities of Searching For Summer and A Son From America are that in the Tom and Lily in Searching For Summer went on a trip to find a little sunshine to bless their marriage. This of course posed problems on the way to finding some of this sunshine. They had a faulty scooter and they had to return a purse to a sweet old Ms. Hatching that live in the middle of god knows where. So in the end Tom and Lily went threw a lot just to get a glimpse of the sun. In A Son from America Samuel left his parents house ant a very young age and must have been difficult to blend in with a whole new life style and doing it by yourself is remarkable. He obviously though in the end had accomplished what he wanted to in the end which is make a lot of money and share it with his mother and father. In both stories there is a point where they are meaning to do something that means a great deal to them. In Searching for Summer Tom and Lily return a purse and lie to Mr. Nokes in order to keep their sunshine paradise a secret. In A Son from America Samuel wants to come home and see how his parents are doing and he wants also check up on them. In both stories there is a happy ending and everything works out for the dynamic characters. Samuel saw his parents were doing well even without the money and Tom and Lily got to see the sun that they had searched for. In the end both stories and there dynamic characters got to accomplish there goals that they had sent out to do and they both had there way of making themselves happy in the end and all satisfied with the accomplishments. Decriminalization vs. ProhibitionThe idea of Drug Prohibition made sense: lower the availability of drugsby the use of law enforcement. Unfortunately, Drug Prohibition means heavycosts while proving to be ineffective and counterproductive.
I was thirteen when I saw drugs for the first time. I was with some ofmy friends that live down the road from me. They asked me if I wanted to gethigh with them. At the time, I didn’t know what getting high meant, so I askedthem. One of them pulled ut a long slender object, similar to a cigarette, buttwisted on either end. They told me it was something special. I was stillbewildered. They said “It’s pot, you know, marijuana?” Immediately I said no.
I had seen several anti-dug commercials, all with the same motto, “Just Say No”. I felt so good about myself. I had done the right thing. I said no to myfriends, which is a very hard decision to make at that age. I was not going tobe one of those sad cases, where my life is wasted away. I was not going to bea crazed addict, who would stop at nothing to get a hit. I was not going to bedodging the law my whole life. I was going to be everything I wanted to be, anddrugs were definitely not going to get in the way. I promised myself I wouldnot end up like Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin, both found dead after overdoses,because I had the power to say no. I had read stories and seen news flashesabout the side effects of some drugs. I had read newspaper articles aboutpeople in Rome, which is just a few minutes away, dying of heroin overdoses. Ihad seen people on TV that were alive, but were not conscious of theirsurroundings, because of drug use. Their lives were basically over. I hadlistened to speakers preach that drugs were one of the Devil’s tools. There wasno way I would even consider ever trying them, because once a person starts,they can’t stop.
It was a few years later that I heard the other side of the story. Ilearned that not only were we losing the war on drugs, but that the war had beencorrupted. The government was wasting money on something without a cause, orhope. It wasn’t long after that when I tried marijuana for the first time. Iremember it well. I was with my sister, who was the only person that I couldn’tsay no to. I took a hit. Within fifteen minutes, I felt the most exquisitefeeling I had ever experienced. I felt as though I was in a different world.
It was at this moment that I knew things would be different for me, but I wasstill unsure about it, because I had heard of the dangers of drug use. Idecided to do a little research. I looked in health magazines, I looked inRolling Stone magazine, and I read some computer articles about the sixties. Ialso casually talked to several people who had experience with drugs. It wasthrough this research that I found out some interesting facts. First was the mere cost of the war on drugs. The federal governmentspends billions of dollars a year on drug enforcement and billions more on drug-related crimes and punishment. The estimated cost to the United States for thiswar on drugs is $200 billion a year, or $770 per person, according to statisticsposted by CNN, and that does not include the money spent by state and localgovernments. Despite this expensive effort to enforce drug laws, the result israther poor.
According to the United States history, Prohibition has not only provedineffective, but also counterproductive, when referring to the eighteenthamendment. Not only is the illegality of drugs today also ineffective, it leadsto huge profits for drug traffickers, which leads to other crimes. Studies haveshown that while the amount of money spent on the war on drugs has increaseddramatically, so has the amount of drug use. A study conducted by CNN has showna twenty percent increase in the use of marijuana.
Another interesting fact is that most illegal drugs are less dangerous,and could be legal. Even harsh drugs, such as heroin and cocaine are proving tobe less dangerous. In fact, in the twenties, cocaine was viewed as a wonderdrug. It was an effective pain killer, it relaxed the body and proved todramatically reduce stress, yet it showed very few side effects. After a while,however, people started finding new ways to use it. These ways would not onlyperform the tasks the drug was intended to perform, they would actually give theperson a euphoric sensation. However, these ways of using it were not as safeas using pills or soft drinks, which also had cocaine in them. People diedafter inhaling too much cocaine. The government had to take action, so theymade cocaine completely illegal, taking away a very good drug.
Heroin is also not as bad as was originally thought. Heroin, likecocaine, is a very effective pain killer. The problem with heroin is that it ishighly addictive, and too much of it can kill. However, this is the case withmany prescription drugs. Too much Tylenol could kill a person, as ibuprofen isdefinitely harmful in large amounts. If heroin was used strictly for medicalpurposes, and was not only prescribed by doctors, but also regulated by doctors,it’s use could be an asset. There is also the issue of marijuana. Every year close to twentythousand people die of alcohol related incidents. Each year close to thirtythousand people die of tobacco related diseases, either lung cancer or emphysema,yet there has never been a death on record that is directly related to marijuana.
The only deaths related to marijuana have been murders associated with drugdealers and traffickers. If marijuana was legal, these deaths would cease tooccur. Also, compared to the side effects of alcohol, the side effects ofmarijuana are minimal. The only side effects of marijuana are induced hungerand what is referred to as “cotton mouth”, which is a dry, pasty feeling in themouth. The side effects of alcohol, however include nausea, possibly vomiting,loss of coordination, not to mention deterioration of the liver and stomach.
Marijuana, like cocaine and heroin, could also have medical purposes. THC,which is the chemical in marijuana that affects the nervous system, can be usedto counteract the side effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients. There isvirtually no solid reason why marijuana should be illegal.
I personally believe that some drugs should be legal. If they are beingused for medical purposes, the government should pass legislation tightening theavailability of prescriptions for these drugs, not make them completely illegal,taking away their good sides as well as their bad sides.
