Naturopathy: License, Regulation, And Usefulness Essay Example

Introduction

The principle of wholeness is a medical approach that treats the human being as an organism with interconnected parts, with all its problems requiring a holistic approach. Naturopathy is an example of such an approach that explores and uses the natural sources of human health: herbs, yoga, meditation, a healthy diet, and lifestyle. These practices are sometimes considered unscientific, as they include rejected healing methods such as homeopathy or spiritual practices. Still, many other naturopathy techniques are proven to work well by various branches of science, and it means that this field can be developed to be beneficial for humanity.

Naturopathy: The Definition

Naturopathy uses plants and other natural remedies for improving one’s health; it is part of complementary and alternative medicine. While its efficiency is contradictory, and many physicians do not accept it, people still use it and report the health improvement (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians: About us, 2021). Its methods include homeopathy, using a small number of substances as a cure, which healing effect is questionable. It also develops working practices, such as yoga, meditation, and psychotherapy; it also widely implements dietary recommendations and herbal substance usage. Naturopathy’s virtue is that it explores the healing potential of those practices and how they can be connected most beneficially.

Naturopathic principles are based on the human’s wholeness and respect toward life in general. They acknowledge the healing power of nature, identify the core causes of an issue or illness, making no harm at first, and recognize that the doctor should be a teacher for a patient (What Is Naturopathic Medicine, 2021). This means that naturopathy considers that the human body has intrinsic healing potential. The primary appointment of the doctor is to wake up this potential by examining the patient and prescribing natural remedies and exercises to them. They often use psychotherapy to improve the psychic health of patients along with physical prescriptions, such as dietary or medications (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians: About us, 2021). In that way, they combine various approaches to the human organism, searching for the best ones and implementing them.

Naturopathy Practices in the United States

The legislature and scale of naturopathy practices differ significantly from state to state. Some states limit the usage of naturopathy at all, while others have organizations and associations connected with the subject. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians is the organization that connects both doctors who practice it professionally and everyone interested in and supports this subject. Forty-two U.S. states and territories have naturopathic organizations, and several others also legally allow its practice (What Is Naturopathic Medicine, 2021). Those organizations are most active and developing, promoting their knowledge and ideas.

Naturopathic physicians struggle to obtain legislation and increase their community support. For example, a current active campaign supports the licensing of naturopathic medicine in Wisconsin (Naturopathic Medicine, 2021). Wisconsin Health Freedom Coalition is also supporting this legislation and promoting the principles of health freedom mentioned earlier. They argue that all people should have access to those practices they want, and no one should be persecuted for them if they do not harm (Take Action on Wisconsin’s Complementary and Alternative Health Practitioners Bill, 2021). Such methods include dietary prescriptions, herbal remedies, yoga, and meditations, all of which are elements of naturopathy.

There are various levels of education for naturopathic doctors and schools which train them. However, those schools often have no appropriate licenses, as traditional medical communities reject naturopathy. Still, naturopathy doctors can be found in all states; for example, there is a specific website for Wisconsin where one may browse and choose the appropriate doctor (Naturopathic Medicine, 2021). If one wants to become a naturopathic doctor, one may contact the local association of naturopathic medicine practitioners and obtain instructions on what they need to do. In that way, there is a strong and developing naturopathic community in the United States.

Health Freedom of Access Legislation of Naturopathy

Health freedom is the term that defines the essential human right to choose which healthcare system is the best suited for them. It is often used to advocate the usage of complementary and alternative medicine, which includes naturopathy. Three central freedoms are freedom to be alone, access, and act (Principles of Health Freedom, 2021). The first one means that no people should be the target of any pressure that limits their choice, directly or indirectly, and choose only on their own which practices they will use for their healing. Freedoms of access and act consider how easily practitioners can find, understand, and use those practices, including contacting qualified alternative medicine physicians. When those practices are in access, they will be developed more efficiently. For example, while there are claims against the scientific basis of naturopathy, it has evidence from psychology, pharmacognosy, and herbal and dietary sciences (What Is Naturopathic Medicine, 2021). In that way, health freedom is the approach that ensures the unrestricted exchange of knowledge and access to those practices that one finds helpful.

Why Naturopathy Can be Good for People

I think naturopathy is a good part of the healthcare system and should be developed, not rejected. While some of its practices, such as homeopathy, have limited or unproven efficiency, its approach, in general, is very beneficial. Psycho-spiritual health is an integral part of one’s well-being, no matter whether they believe in something supernatural or not, and it is the advantage of this approach that it acknowledges this. I think naturopathic medicine should develop and use knowledge from various branches of science to make its practices more efficient and, thus, more recognized.

Health freedom is an essential part of modern democracy, where people are treated as conscious, sentient beings who have access to knowledge and are responsible for their actions. Alternative medicine is very different, and instead of rejecting it, it would be better to develop it. Health freedom promotes this development, as it stimulates the free exchange of knowledge between specialists and various branches of knowledge, for example, plant science and psychotherapy.

What can be Changed in the Current Naturopathy Legislation

Naturopathy’s potential is understudied, underestimated, and often rejected; in addition, its standards and registrations are often unclear or absent. In that way, those who choose to practice this discipline should have better access to its practices and doctors. The lack of good standards based on evidence weakens the whole approach, leading to further rejection. In addition, naturopathy is not well-developed, being a mix of both good and unproven practices. In that way, it should be explored further, collecting the efficient remedies and rejecting inefficient ones; the development of strong standards and official registration would also benefit it.

Conclusion

As one sees, naturopathy is a complex topic that is often contradictory: while some of its practices are helpful, others seem to be delusions. An example of the former is using yoga, based on modern anatomy, to heal body problems. The latter includes such superstitions as homeopathy, which are primarily unsuccessful in proving their efficiency. Naturopathic specialists have a well-formed and constantly developing community in the United States that promotes health freedom and advocates unrestricted access to its practices. In general, this discipline has the potential to be a robust healing system, combining various efficient approaches in the most beneficial ways.

Plans To Expand Operation: Acquisition Options Of Seven Aircrafts

Introduction

A market analysis quantitatively and qualitatively assesses an industry’s market. It assists in understanding market size and value, the customer segments and their buying patterns, and the economic environment’s barriers. The airline industry provides passengers with transportation services via flights. The companies acquire the aircraft through various means, including purchase, rent, or lease. Moreover, the airline industry is characterized by acquisitions, mergers, and consolidation.

The airline industry has evolved over the years and only has room for significant players who have a monopoly over the market and decide on asset and transport prices. The new entrants into the airline industry have characteristically exploited two specialty segments, the price niche and the route niche (Gunarathna, 2020). These segments focus on offering more convenient and superior, less costly service for its customers. However, today, price positioning alone is no longer a concept when building an airline since the flying public expects low fares. Therefore, service mix and route selection have become the real market segment opportunities today.

The expansion of any business is a strategic exercise and requires the identification of specific reasons for the implementation. In most cases, it increases current sales or introduces new goods into the market. The expansion process of an airline involves planning, market analysis, and the use of funds to ensure the acquisition of quality assets (Bakır and Atalık, 2021). Some specific considerations are required for an airline company before expanding the business. These factors include customers, employees, vendors, and procurement contracts. Analyzing the customers is necessary to identify whether it is beneficial regarding money, time, and resources.

On the other hand, consideration of employees is vital since more staff are required in the new locations. Vendors are also considered to identify who is capable of continuing with service delivery. Finally, the procurement contracts of the business are a necessary factor. This paper elucidates the various acquisition options and recommends the best choice for expanding the company’s operation by adding seven aircraft.

Acquisition Options

The acquisition option of business equipment is dependent on the type of situation. The situation depends on the company’s number of funds and the reason for acquiring the items. These considerations assist in knowing how to purchase the equipment. Despite the uniqueness of each business, the decision of whether to buy, rent, or lease equipment has to be made on a case-by-case basis (Joshi et al., 2019). The airline industry has to consider various factors when procuring a new fleet, whether it is more beneficial and advantageous to lease the aircraft over purchasing them. If the organization hires the seven jets, it will require them to define terms and conditions under which the owners will agree to rent the items. The lease will allow the organization to continue using the aircraft as long as they make regular payments.

Leasing

Leasing of equipment by the company will provide flexibility and preserve capital but may lead to a rise in costs in the end. However, there are numerous advantages to this mode of acquisition. First, there are fewer initial expenses; it enables companies to acquire assets with minimum initial costs. Besides, leased equipment requires no down payment, and companies can receive items with minimum effect on the cash flow. Secondly, hired equipment is tax-deductible and can lower the lease’s net cost. Thirdly, there are flexible terms; this equipment is simpler to obtain and has more flexible terms for purchasing them. Finally, upgrading the equipment is straightforward; hence, the problem of obsolescence can be simply addressed. A lessee can shift to other high-end equipment once the initial lease is done. Despite numerous advantages to leasing, there are also disadvantages, including high overall cost, lack of ownership of the property, and obligation to pay for the entire lease.

Purchase

Buying equipment is another option for acquiring property for the business. This model is very advantageous. However, the high initial cost makes it difficult for people to use it. The main benefit is the company will have full ownership of the item. In addition, it becomes more advantageous when the equipment can be used for a long without quickly getting outdated. Tax incentives are another advantage of buying compared to the other acquisition modes. The revenue code permits companies to deduct the costs of some items purchased in the first year. Finally, this mode has a possibility of depreciation deduction, which will provide the company with tax savings. However, there are two main disadvantages of buying the equipment: high initial expense and being stuck with old equipment.

Whether the company should buy or lease the aircraft is mainly dependent on the net cost of the planes, tax breaks, and the resale value. Once the procurement team or the purchasing department has determined a cost-effective option, we consider other factors, including the possibility of the aircraft becoming obsolete or damaged before the lease time ends. Also, we must consider the length of time the company will need the airplanes, whether the organization values convenience more than cost, and whether the organization’s needs are constantly changing.

Recommendation

The recommended form of acquiring the two additional wide-body jets (Airbus A320) and the five additional narrow-body jets (BOEING 767-200ER) is to purchase. The option of buying the seven aircraft is more convenient and will save more money for the organization in the end. I believe the available cash budget is sufficient to procure quality aircraft without the need for leasing. Furthermore, the possibility of the equipment becoming obsolete is very low since the technology used in their creation is high-valued. Engineers and other experts in the aviation industry have taken it through various tests and simulations. Moreover, upgrading the aircraft is not difficult since the producers have amicable terms and manufacture high-quality spare parts in line with the current technological trends.

In addition, ownership of the aircraft is more convenient for the organization since it will ensure its independence and prevent the possibility of the competitors or the lessors themselves exploiting the company or the asset itself. Additionally, by owning, the availability of the investment will always be guaranteed, and the company can do anything it wants with it, which provides excellent flexibility. Moreover, through cash purchases, the company can customize the aircraft according to its own unique needs. Finally, there are very few aircraft suppliers and manufacturers in the airline industry. This low number makes it possible to differentiate the different brands of aircraft. Below is the proposed budget for buying the seven jets.

Purchase of 2 WB Jets: Airbus A320 – $77,400,000 x 2 = $154,800,000

Purchase of 5 NB Jets: BOEING 767-200ER – $20,000,000 x 5 = $100,000,000

Total – $254,800,000

Acquisition Process and Timeline

A formal acquisition process is essential when acquiring goods for an organization. It ensures reduced fraud, theft, and rogue spending caused by non-optimized, undocumented buying habits. In addition, it creates an efficient buying process for direct and indirect expenditures, optimal supply chain management, provides a clear audit trail for external and internal review, and assists in managing supplier relationships. Regardless of the organization’s size, a formalized purchasing process is required to compete in the modern market. A formal purchasing process follows a set of well-established steps, each with its unique advantage.

Process and Timeline

Purchasing the aircraft will incorporate two stages, pre-purchase inspection, and closure of the deal. A pre-buy review of the airplanes is meant to allow research and analysis of every aspect of the potential investment. This stage primarily includes a detailed inspection of the plane, including both the cosmetic and mechanical conditions. The research is also crucial for determining the right aircraft for the company’s operation. Once the airplanes are verified to be in good condition, the acquisition process then begins,

The acquisition process has several steps that need to be followed for the transaction to be successful with minimum errors and minimum resources. The first step in the acquisition is needs analysis (Kuang, 2020). At this stage, the organization identifies and records the problems that procuring the aircraft will solve. The need to purchase the seven additional airplanes is to assist in expanding the company’s operation. The addition of jets into the fleet will mean that more passengers will be able to travel from various destinations simultaneously. This will enable the company to solve people’s problem of booking their flights a week before the trip. Also, this will ensure a significant increase in the company’s profits, hence can compete with the tough competitors who have been in the industry for a long time.

The second stage of acquisition is purchase requisition to purchase order. After identifying the needs to be met by the additional jets, the procurement team develops a purchase requisition that is submitted to the purchasing manager or the department responsible for acquisitions. The purchase requisition has a detailed description of the aircraft the organization intends to obtain. When the purchase request is below the budget, they are immediately updated to purchase orders, and the organization contacts the preferred supplier. Those purchases that are more expensive or not present in the budget are submitted for review by appropriate individuals. The rejected purchase requests that do not meet the expected threshold are returned to the issuing party for clarification, review, and correction. The $250 million cash budget available for acquiring the extra fleet is sufficient for purchasing the two additional WB and the five additional NB aircraft instead of leasing or renting. The suppliers in the airline industry deliver high-quality jets with costs that are even lower than those stated in the budget.

The acquisition orders that the purchasing department has approved are sent to accounting to check whether the available funds are sufficient to cover the requested item. The next step after approval is the request for proposal step. These requests are made once Pos receives the budget approval, and the procurement department is made aware. These RFQs are sent to various suppliers to solicit bids to secure the order for goods. The interested vendors submit their proposals, which the organization reviews based on their compliance records, performance history, and other factors, including price, reputation, and lead times.

The fifth stage in the acquisition process is contract negotiation and approval. The company then gives the contract to the supplier who wins the bid. The organization and the supplier then do further negotiation to guarantee favorable terms and conditions for both parties before they agree to sign it. Once they are done with signing the contract, the order will legally bind the buyer and the seller. The timeframe for delivery of the item is then agreed upon, and the supplier is expected to meet the deadline (Ritorto and Fisher, 2017). Once the organization receives the goods, it carefully reviews them to ensure the supplier delivered what was promised. In case of any issues, they notify the vendor through the procurement department. The supplier then issues the invoice, and three-way matching is done to compare shipping documents with the initial order of purchase. In case of discrepancies, they must be corrected quickly to prevent extra charges, damage to supplier reputation, and delays in payment or production. The orders that match are then approved for payments, and if additional charges are required, another layer of approvals is made before issuing the payments. Payments are usually made early to score discounts and to avoid extra charges due to late payment fees. Completed orders are then documented in the company’s book and securely kept in a central location.

Conclusion

There are various acquisition options to consider when acquiring aircraft. The options include renting, leasing, or purchasing. The choice of an option is based on the organization’s needs, the amount of funds available, and the length of time the asset is needed. Since the airline industry has very few known suppliers who are well known and have a reputation to keep, it is easier to keep track of purchases. I recommend that the best option for acquiring the seven aircraft for expansion is to purchase them since the available budget is sufficient to procure them, it guarantees ownership of the property, and the company can customize them according to their needs.

“East Brains, West Brains” By Sharon Begley

The society in which individuals live comprises different cultural practices due to many people from different cultural backgrounds and orientations staying together. For a long time, Western experts have considered that people around the globe see and interpret the surrounding world in the same way. However, from the moment when the studies began to be conducted on non-Westerners as well, the picture of the situation became different. In her article East Brains, West Brains, Sharon Begley states that people of different cultures perceive the whole picture of the world, as well as other people, differently. An analysis of the article leads to the conclusion that people of various cultures see everything – starting from the facial features of their interlocutors and ending with the details of the picture or surroundings.

The context in which this work is written consists of cultural and political relations between Western and Eastern people, who try to overcome their differences to work together productively. Because the article was written in the first decade of the 21st century, it represents the current political and cultural direction – the diplomacy between the West and the East. Such countries as the United States and the United Kingdom are typical representatives of Western values and culture. At the same time, China and Japan may be defined as good examples of Eastern culture. In their book, Curtis Martin and Bruce Stronach analyze the differences between two modern democracies – Britain and Japan (2017). These two countries, at first glance, have the same political system; “the countries represent unique and incomparable political systems” (Martin and Stronach 2017). Thus, the author reflects on the given cultural context in her article, comparing two separate, and sometimes opposed, cultures.

One of defining features of the culture is its bias toward individualism or collectivism, which significantly influences a person’s overall perception of the surrounding world. Individualism makes a person regards himself as a separated autonomous unit of the society, while at the same time, the collectivist person regards himself as a part of a solid societal structure. As it was said in the article, – “Westerners tend to look at particular features on a face, such as the eyes or mouth, while East Asians focus on the center of the face” (Begley, 2021). Begley separates these two approaches and marks the first as focused on particular features and the second as holistic (2021). Thus, such feature as a degree of collectivism or individualism in the culture defines a person’s focusing points, making him outline the distinct traits of an object or regard it as a whole.

Another factor that may influence the culture’s ethics and, therefore, an individual’s perception is the external environment in which individuals and cultures are developing. A person grows as a representative of a given culture and cannot be entirely separated from society. Thus, the community in which an individual exists will inevitably affect his worldview. In her article, Sharon Begley supports the opinion that the external environment, especially society, influences a person’s perceptual mechanisms (Begley, 2021). Thus, the experience, that an individual gains in the process of his interaction with society, shapes his worldview and moral values (Begley, 2021). Considering this information, it is impossible to regard a person as a fully independent unit.

Some scholars and researchers claim that in the modern era of globalization, the worldview of individuals becomes unified and connects with Western values. Although this claim has some degree of validity, it has several gaps. For example, if to analyze the history of the Central Asian peoples, it is possible to understand that they are currently undergoing the “cultural revival of their traditional values” (Khodjamkulov, Makhmudov snd Shofkorov 2020 6694). Although Western media or transnational companies may have become a part of Eastern people’s life, they mostly do not influence an individual’s way of thinking. Thus, the aspect of a strong cultural heritage cannot be disregarded as insignificant.

Westerners have many differences from Eastern people, starting from their political views and ending with the perception of others. This cultural gulf between the two mentioned cultures is a reason for various misunderstandings and conflicts, based on the inability to accept the existence of a value system, which differs from that of a given individual. In the analyzed article author displays how seriously values may vary, thus promoting the need to accept and understand that there is more than one culture, more than one language, and more than one opinion.
