Plato’s “Symposium”: An Explanation Of Love Essay Example

Plato’s Symposium 201d-212c is primarily focused on Socrates’s speech. The Greek philosopher and thinker addresses Agathon about the notion and nature of Love. He uses the wisdom he received from Diotima of Mantinea in order to explain what role and place Love holds. The first aspect of the speech focuses on Agathon’s arguments about Love being inherently good and beautiful. Such a statement implies that Love is self-sufficient and, thus, does not need or require external sources for goodness and beauty. Socrates recalls that he then assumed that Love must be ugly if it is not inherently beautiful. Diotima called the statement blasphemy, pointing out the highly limited “black and white” view of Socrates. She revealed that there is always a space between two extremes, where Love can also reside. The author writes, “what is he, Diotima? He is a great spirit (daimon), and like all spirits, he is intermediate between the divine and the mortal” (Plato, n.d., p. 1). In other words, it is explained that Love is not inherently beautiful or ugly but rather a concept, which is a constant need for beauty and goodness. It is neither a god nor mortal but rather a spirit that communicates the latter two entities.

Moreover, the spirit of Love is explained to be a daimon, who is a child of two other gods, Poros and Penia. Penia or Poverty conceived Love by seizing the opportunity when Poros or Plenty was asleep in the garden of Zeus (Plato, n.d.). In other words, Love encompasses the dualistic natures of its parents, which resulted in the uniqueness and intricacy of Love as a force of nature and spirit. The spirit of Love is “by nature neither mortal nor immortal, but alive and flourishing at one moment when he is in plenty, and dead at another moment, and again alive by reason of his father’s nature” (Plato, n.d., p. 2). Therefore, the daimon is not a fixed entity but rather something that resembles a process under constant change.

Diotima further explains that wisdom is not sought out by gods or wise people, who are wise enough already, and ignorant. Therefore, wisdom is only of interest to people in between wisdom and ignorance. It is stated, “they are those who are in a mean between the two; Love is one of them. For wisdom is a most beautiful thing, and Love is of the beautiful; and therefore Love is also a philosopher” (Plato, n.d., p. 2). Therefore, Love is a concept, which manifests itself in need for wisdom and beauty, but it is not inherently good as gods.

It is important to note that the narrative suggests that Love comes in layers of revelations, which is why it is similar to a learnable skill. It is explained that one needs to seek beautiful forms in order to develop an appreciation and Love for beauty, meaning that the former needs the latter. After this process, one will be highly protective and appreciative of the newfound beauty. Next, one will learn to see beauty in other forms as well, which will make him or her appreciates the beauty in many forms. Then, one will eventually learn that all forms contain beauty, and they are all equivalent to each other. After this step, one will ascend to see beauty in knowledge, which will lead to the beauty of laws and institutions, which will lead to the beauty of science. The following step is one’s appreciation of beauty in nature, which leads to the final stage, which is the beauty of communion.

Blockchain Technologies By FinTech For Enhanced Security

The financial department within an organization or any given entity is one of the most delicate sectors that help ensure high levels of productivity within any profitable and non-profit firm. Most firms have taken measures that help ensure high levels of security are maintained to avoid unnecessary losses. FinTech is one of the most productive innovations within the financial sector that have enabled the maintenance of high-level security in most financial institutions worldwide (Gomber et al., 2018). The emerging technologies have also helped in enhancing quality service delivery to the clients of various institutions.

FinTech innovations are among the world’s leading innovators to develop very effective technologies that have positively impacted the financial sectors globally. Some of the most productive technologies that various financial organizations can adopt to enhance their productivity in the market include mobile banking, artificial intelligence, biometric technologies, big data, blockchains, and open banking APIs. The technologies have efficiently penetrated the market and industry due to the qualitative productivity they have brought about into the operations of various firms in the financial sector, such as the banking industry (Gomber et al., 2018). The main aim of adopting emerging technologies in the banking sector is to ensure customer satisfaction.

Some of the main accelerators for the adoption of emerging financial technologies for security are the rapidly increasing numbers of clients depending on various institutions for satisfactory services. Most banks and other financial institutions have recorded increased numbers of customers whose wants cannot be fully satisfied by the available human resources, which leads to most organizations acquiring various technologies suitable for customer satisfaction. One of the new technological innovations that have had a positive impact on the banking sector includes blockchain.

A blockchain is an innovation that enables any financial organization or system to record big amounts of data, making it impossible for an individual to hack into the system and change any information in the records. Technically, a blockchain can be considered an online ledger for firms and banks dealing with big and confidential data. Blockchain technologies have also brought about cryptocurrencies, which have made safer and faster transactions within online platforms.

Blockchain technologies have helped in maintaining trustworthy relationships between firms and their clients. Most financial institutions globally have embraced internet banking which enables their clients to perform different tasks online. Blockchain enhances secure transactions that are conducted within online platforms. Blockchain has greatly helped in filling in the loopholes that exposed them to risky situations.

The major element required for any financial institution in the banking sector to successfully adopt blockchain technology is providing proper education to the employees and customers about the innovation. Proper education on blockchain technology will enable both financial institutions and their customers to make very productive choices during their financial operations (Paul & Sadath, 2021). Some of the variables required to ensure that all the emerging technologies are fruitful for an organization are the robustness of the technology, understanding of how the new technology operates, and faster internet connectivity. The other necessary element for inserting the innovation is revising the equipment of the firm and the necessary tools to make the system function properly.

Some of the probable changes that will come up as a result of adopting blockchain and other various technologies within the banking sector are reduced over-dependence on human resources, reduced financial costs on security and maintenance, faster speed of transactions, and better personal data control. Most operations will be done through automated machines and applications, which are faster and safer as compared to human resources (Paul & Sadath, 2021). Implementing blockchain is an innovative action leading to the rapid development of the company, its reliability, and safe data usage.

How Technology Has Affected Communication

Introduction

Communication is an important part of the social, economic, and cultural aspects of human society. There is a need for a proper exchange of ideas, facts, and emotions between different parties for human development to existing. Communication is a great facilitator of collaboration in any community. The way people communicate has evolved over the years, and technology has marked a major revolution. Technological development has redefined communication over the years by early age designs such as blowing horns to modern internet communication. The milestones achieved through technological development has impacted contemporary communication widely.

Positive Impact of Technology on Communication

The integration of technology in communication has made it easier and simple to undertake communication. There are different information technology applications which are able to provide the ability to make instant communication. As a result, due to the use of telecommunication technology, people can communicate with those in remote areas in real-time. This is something that would not have been possible in the earlier years. By using the internet or a mobile phone, individuals can communicate with each other thereby saving the time it takes to move from one place to another trying to communicate (Neuman, 2016). This has helped to reduce the time to make decisions such as business deals can be made over the phone without the need to meet physically. Therefore, real-time communication has been made easier and cheaper through telecommunication technology.

The adoption of new media alongside existing traditional media has provided a social change impact in communication. social media is a powerful communication tool that has impacted every aspect of modern communication. while traditional media technology has provided impressive ways of communicating in the past, the adoption of new media has revolutionized the publishing and sharing of information between different parties (Pratt & Cakula, 2021). The use of social media has created new ways of communicating that would not be possible before. As a result of enabling real-time communication with each other, people can create and strengthen relationships in a way that would never have been possible.

The changing telecommunication and information technologies have provided better solutions to modern problems. As a result of the ability to undertake communication through technology, international collaboration has been made possible. For instance, the Coronavirus movement restrictions have been made better through videoconferencing applications such as Zoom and Google Meet. Through the adoption of these technologies, people have been able to recreate meetings and education environments in a virtual setup (Raja & Nagasubramani, 2018). The use of technology in eLearning has allowed remote and distant learning thereby helping the continuation of learning even when in-person class attendance is untenable.

Through social media and traditional media services such as television and radio, brands can communicate their products and services to the masses. This is a game-changer as it makes it possible to speak to larger audiences within a shorter time and at a fraction of the cost (Neuman, 2016). Furthermore, the adoption of machine learning and artificial intelligence in social media has allowed for personalized and automated communication between a brand and its customers (Pratt & Cakula, 2021). this allows a business to undertake personalized communications with each client automatically and easily. This has changed how companies run their marketing campaigns.

Negative Impact of Technology on Communication

The successful integration of telecommunication and information technologies has also had some negative effects on communication. In-person, communication allows for personal appeal and develops interpersonal relationships easier. However, the use of technology has stripped off the chance for proper personal appeal in communication as most communication in the modern era is done through different technological platforms. Although platforms such as videos conferencing try to replicate in-person meetings in virtual cyberspace, it is evident that the current generation has failed to gain interpersonal skills which can only be learnt through face-to-face communication scenarios. The use of technology in communication involves the use of text-based communications and other multimedia elements. However, this has led to an effect on non-verbal communication.

As a result of adoption and overreliance on technology for communication has led to reduced social interactions. For instance, instead of individuals taking time to undertake meetings and share ideas, people have resulted in sharing emails and messages which denies such communications the chance of social interactions. Social media is a big part of modern communication and poses the problem of addiction. Interment and mobile phone addiction are a major issue of concern, especially for millennials. As a result of the addiction to communication technologies, individuals have developed effects such as isolation and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, technological platforms have been used as a platform for harassment which has led to determinantal results including suicides. Many people undergo cyberbullying on social media which is regretful.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the milestones achieved through technological development has impacted contemporary communication widely. The adoption and integration of telecommunication and information technologies in modern commutation is a game-changer in human interactions. Many benefits come with the adoption of technology in communication such as removed barriers to remote communication, strengthened relationships, better solutions, social change, and the possibility of e-learning. However, there is a downside to the use of technology in communication such as cyberbullying, poor interpersonal communication skills, reduced social interactions, and social media addiction. From the discussion above it is apparent that technology has revolutionized modern communication and it is bound to grow exponentially. However, the negative impacts will also continue to be experienced. As a result, despite the negative impacts, technology has provided important milestones in modern communication and with proper measures, in place, the negative effects can be dealt with.
