Sinclair Ross’ The Painted Door: A Review Sample Assignment

Sinclair Ross’ use of the motif of the “encroaching storm” in his short story “The Painted Door,” illustrates Ann’s internal struggle that builds continuously throughout the story. Through the use of imagery, Ross emphasizes Ann’s self destruction and her inner struggle of fidelity within her marriage and how that impacts her seven year marriage with John. Ross’ use of characterization implies that Ann deserves to live a happier live and enjoy it. 1) Ross parallels the exterior storm with the destruction of her seven year marriage with John.

Ann’s instincts tells her about the upcoming storm in her relationship – “Steven” as she stops John from leaving “it isn’t right to leave me here alone”. Her inner fear “it was the silence weighing upon her” arises with the storm. she distracts herself by painting “it’s a good chance when he’s away to paint” the door . 2)Ross’s use of “snow” and “fire” personifies the two men in Ann’s life. The comparison between the two characters are shown through the imagery. he fire stands for John because he wants to “ buy pretty clothes for her”, brings “plenty of wood” to keep her warm, and he supported her for seven years. The “chilled” and the “snow” represents her relationship with John and attraction toward steven.

Ann compares the two characters in many ways: John “old and uglier” and Steven “handsome, young and Attractive”. She puts her real happiness- “her seven year marriage” at jeopardy just for her lust that she has towards Steven. ) Ross’s demonstration of Ann’s character emphasises her hardship to have a better life in the future. She helps her husband by “[milks] the cow and hoed potatoes”. She finds her happiness in art, when she paints the door she gets “isolated” from the storm and the outside world. housewife demand “ spend more time with her” after john left the house the feeling of fear and desperation for love and happiness dominated her mind and she inattentively betrayed her husband.

The Student Council: A Model Of Good Governance

In every academic unit, their ultimate goal is to attain the welfare of all students. In the University of Northern Philippines the Student Council (SC) serves as the supreme student government in the academe. They serve as the main example for every organization in showing good governance to its constituents. The Council is also an excellent ground for building up leaders to be the role model to their fellow students. The Academic Unit Councils (AUC’S) serve as the group of students who shares common interest and ideologies.

Students involve themselves to this organization in order to develop their skills and field of expertise for their near future. The officers of the Academic Units Councils are the representatives of the students of the different course in the university. They serve as the voice of their organization to the Supreme Student Government. The Supreme Student Government cooperates with every Academic Unit Councils (AUC’S) to give assistance for the development and advancements for their constituents.

They also answer different hindrances by putting up projects and programs as an answer. The Student councils put up activities and projects like initiated, sponsored activities, co-sponsored, intangible, tangible activities and projects. This serves as a stepping stones and basis of the University in infrastructure and academic curriculum for development. The university also supports the development programs enabling the student’s welfare to capacitate their growth.

To sum up, the conduct of this study may provide a deeper and better analysis on the awareness of the officers of the Academic Unit Councils on the implementations of programs and projects of the Student Council of the University of Northern Philippines and may identify the areas in their performances to be improved. Statement of the problem This study aimed to assess the level of awareness of the Academic Unit Council on the implementation of projects and programs of the Student Council. Specifically, it sought to determine the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms: ) age, b) sex, c) religious affiliation, d) academic unit, and e) media exposure? 2. What is the level of awareness of the Academic Unit Council officers in terms of: a) initiated activities and projects, b) sponsored activities and projects, c) co-sponsored projects/activities, d) intangible projects/activities, and e) tangible projects? 3. Is there a significant relationship between the awareness of the Academic Unit Council officers and their profile? 4. Is there a significant relationship between and among the Academic Unit Council elected officers of the University of Northern Philippines?

Scope and Delimitation The scope of the study will be delimited to the awareness of the Academic Unit Council on the programs and projects of the Student Council. This study was limited its coverage on the elected officers of the different Academic Unit Councils of the University of Northern Philippines who generously involve themselves in student leadership and volunteerism. Each Academic Unit Councils officer was given a questionnaire to answer. The independent variables that will be included are the following selected variables: age, sex, religious affiliation, academic unit, and media exposure.

The dependent variables that are the following: initiated activities and projects, sponsored activities and projects, co-sponsored projects/activities, intangible projects/activities, and tangible projects. Thus, this study covered the awareness of the Academic Unit Council on the implementation of projects and programs of the Student Council. Operational Definition of Terms The following terms are defined operationally as follows: Academic Unit Council (AUC). This refers to the mother organization of a certain college in the university which requires mandatory existence as recognized by the Office of Student Affairs.

It was formerly known as Mandated Organization, authorized to perform tasks of supervising activities of students. Student Council. Is the supreme student government in the university. AUC Officers. This refers to the students who are elected into office to lead an Academic Unit Council. Sex. This refers to the biological status of a person, either as a male or female. Religious Affiliation. This refers to the involvement of the respondents depending on their belief in God. Academic Unit. This refers to the different colleges of the university. Media Exposure.

This refers to the medium which the respondents are using in order to gather their needed information. Tangible. Things that able to be touched or perceived through the sense of touch Intangible. Nonmaterial or lacking material qualities, and so not able to be touched or seen Assumptions This study assumes that: 1. The questionnaire that will be administered to the officers of the Academic Unit Council is reliable and valid. 2. The respondent’s answers are honest to their awareness on the different projects and programs that are being implemented by the Student council. Hypothesis

This study will test the null hypothesis stated as: 1. That there was no significant relationship between the level of awareness of the respondents and their profile. 2. There a significant relationship between and among the Academic Unit Council elected officers of the University of Northern Philippines. Methodology This section presents the research design, population, instrumentation and data gathering techniques. Research design. The descriptive-correlational method of research will be used in this study. It is descriptive- correlational because it sought to determine and find out the profile of the respondents.

The descriptive method looks into the awareness of the Academic Unit Council officers on the implementation of the projects and programs of the Student Council. Population. The elected officers of the different Academic Unit Councils of the University of Northern Philippines will be the respondents of this study. Part I is on the profile of the respondents and Part II is on the data on the awareness of the Academic Unit Council(AUC) elected officers on the implementation of the projects and programs of the Student Council.

It is composed of five components, to wit: initiated activities and projects, sponsored activities and projects, co-sponsored projects/activities, intangible projects/activities, and tangible projects. Data Gathering Techniques. In the conduct of the study, the researchers will request permission from the Deans of the different colleges the College Dean for the administration of the questionnaires of which the researchers had prepared. After the request, the questionnaires will be given to the espondents and will be retrieving after a week from the day they were administered. Statistical Treatment of Data. The researchers will be using the following statistical tools in the treatment of the data gathered to come out with valid and reliable results: 1. Frequency count and Percentage will be use to describe the officers in terms of socio-demographic factors. 2. Mean will be use to determine the level of awareness of the AUC’s on the implementation of the projects and programs of the Student Council.

Symbolism’s Of Hell In “The Pit And The Pendulum” Short Summary

In the short story, Poe uses the pit to symbolize hell. In the beginning, the soldier describes going into the pit as “a mad rushing descent as of the soul into Hades” (Poe 268). The descent reminds the reader of hell in that it is beneath the surface of the ground. Also, when the soldier describes the mad rushing, it can represent hell because nothing in hell is supposed to be orderly or calm. In the Bible, hell is described as a chaotic and tortuous place. “Hades” is an allusion to Greek mythology and describes the underworld.

Through the description of the pit from the soldier, the pit is considered hell because it is a chaotic and underground place. The soldier also says, “faces in coal that glow”, after he is brought down into the pit (Poe 268). This could also allude to hell because fire is an element commonly related to hell. Another element of hell that is used in the pit is the demon drawings on the walls. They are used to scare the prisoners that are being tortured. Demonic figures are a symbol of hell and because they are used in the short story, they add to the pit being a symbol of hell.

In the pit, there is a hole near the middle that is a deep abyss. This abyss provides terror when the soldier realizes he has almost fallen into it, just as hell provides lasting terror. This abyss reminds the reader of hell because it seems like hell is a bottomless pit of lasting eternity. Through the elements described in the pit, Poe uses it as a symbol to guide the reader to view the story as a decent into hell. Another symbol used in “The Pit and the Pendulum”, that contributes to the story being read as a descent into hell, is the pendulum.

After seeing the pendulum, the narrator notes that it is “perceptively descended” as he realizes that the pendulum is slowly falling closer to him (Poe 274). This pendulum has a sharp bottom that will cut the soldier in half when it reaches him. As the pendulum gets nearer to hitting him, the solider knows his life is getting closer to ending. Whenever the pendulum reaches him, the soldier will die. The soldier also says that the pendulum “swung through the air” (Poe 274). The movement of the pendulum is similar to a clock, which goes along with the theme that the pendulum symbolizes time.

Depending on how low the pendulum is, the life of the soldier is slowly getting closer to ending. The pendulum provides imminent death just like hell provides imminent and lasting torture. Watching the pendulum as it descends closer to him tortures the soldier mentally as if he is in hell. When the soldier uses the rats to save himself from the pendulum, it reminds the reader of hell because rodents are imagined to be in hell. The pendulum is symbolic of a clock and life ending, making it a key element in the idea of the story being read as a descent into hell.

The final symbol that allows the short story, “The Pit and the Pendulum”, to be read as a descent into hell is General Lasalle. As the soldier is about to fall into the pit after many tribulations and struggles to stay alive, he is saved. The soldier says, “An outstretched arm caught my own as I fell fainting into the abyss” while describing his saving (Poe 280). This is symbolic of salvation because the soldier was saved moments before he would have fallen to his death. A man named General Lasalle saved the soldier from dying and can represent Jesus.

This is symbolic of salvation because just like the General saved the soldier, Jesus will save us in the end. After being saved, the soldier describes hearing trumpets playing, and he says, “there was a loud blast as of many trumpets” (Poe 280). In the Bible there are many times that trumpets blasting represent holy events. This is an element that makes the saving symbolic of salvation because in the Bible music plays a role in salvation. Poe uses many symbols throughout “The Pit and the Pendulum” that allow the reader to discern the short story as a descent into hell.

The pit is used to symbolize hell because it is underground and is described as having demons drawn on the walls. Poe also uses elements that are commonly perceived as relating to hell such as fire and torture. Another element used is the pendulum, which symbolizes the amount of time left in the soldier’s life. General Lasalle is symbolic of salvation in that he saves the soldier. Also, the element of music is present, which relates to salvation. “The Pit and the Pendulum”, by Edgar Allan Poe, can be read as a descent into hell through the symbolisms in the pit, the pendulum, and General Lasalle.
