The generation gap is one which cannot be bridged

The so-called “generation gap” always exists as an inevitable social phenomenon of all time. The nature of this is differences and misunderstandings between the young and their elders causing a big gap that cannot be bridged as many considered. However, there are still multiple people believing in the “possibility” and attempting to bridge generations by narrowing the gap gradually.

To start with, we all cannot deny the truism that each generation has its own thinking and lifestyle and wants to uphold the principles they believe in. This, unfortunately, leads to the contradiction between the young and the elderly. It goes without saying that our parents or even grandparents normally tend to stick with the perfectionism and lead us go the way they did. Thus, they might derive discomfort and even angry from their children’s new tattoos, face makeup, sexy clothing, etc. Meanwhile, the young views everything more open and simpler, so they are more flexible than their elders in adapting and approaching to new changes or frontiers. In short, these two distinct types of perception are increasingly extending the existed gap between the old and young people.

What is more, communication-related issue, especially language, is another factor that prevents generations from bridging the gap. Along with our culture, language is developing and changing rapidly. Young people today uses slang and acronyms as a contemporary trend that the elderly does not know. Besides, with the development of technology, the young nowadays spends most of their time on the internet and mobile phone to communicate with each other. Consequently, they are going to talk less to their parents, who are mostly unfamiliar with these modern means of communication. Accidentally, the relationship becomes worse synonymous with the greater gap.

On the other hand, we can find a few cases in which the young and old maintain good relationship with each other. It is not necessary to live as our parents did but we need their guidance and support as well as should be grateful for how they lived to set our today lives by their devotion. Instead of protesting, we should learn how to reinforce their belief in us. In the side of parents, they should at least once put themselves in the position of their children to feel and consider every problem in the most objective way. By this way, it is believed that people in every age possibly become closer to each other and the huge gap can be narrower. If you walk around Hoan Kiem Lake in the early morning, you can see a striking example for this, there is the image of a group of elderly people, instead of doing exercise or Tai Chi, practicing hip-hop dance with some juvenile teachers. This might be a vivid illustration for the possibility to bridge the generation gap.

All in all, we have to admit that people cannot break away from the generation gap at all due to the solid barrier of differences and misunderstandings. Still, it does not mean hopeless, I myself always trust that we can entirely improve the situation by making some effort from both sides, such as talking, understanding, feeling what the other people want to convey to us.

Purifying Acetanilide By Recrystallization

Discussion:

Acenatilide is a synthetic organic compound introduced in therapy in 1866 as a fever-reducing drug. Its effectiveness in relieving pain was discovered soon thereafter, and it was used as an alternative to aspirin.

The solvent that I selected to recrystallize the crude acenatillide was water. The pure acenatilide did not dissolve in water at room temperature but did dissolve in the water once boiled. The other possible selection would have been petroleum ether but the compound did not dissolve in the solvent when heated to its melting point. After dissolving the crude compound in the boiling solvent, I cooled the compound and filtered the solution. The crystals are allowed to dry and then the mass is measured to determine the recovery percentage.

Water is a good solvent for recrystallization at high temperatures in this experiment only because at high temperature, the water molecules move faster and bump into the solute more often. The heat also loosens and breaks apart the molecular forces of acenatilide. The polar ends attract the solute’s charged ends and they are diffused. The acetanilide needs the high temperature of boiling water to keep from crystallizing. The compound has a polar group, which allows it to interact with other polar groups.

My results are less than the theoretical maximum percent recovery. In order to know the number of moles of pure acetanilide recovered, I would have to know the molecular formula of the impure acetanilide. If the acetanilide and water mixture was not boiled long enough, there would still be impurities present leading to a decreased yield in pure crystals formed. Some crystals may have been lost in the Buchner funnel or when transferring from the funnel to the beaker. Some crystals may have been lost when transferred from the filter paper to the beaker before obtaining the mass of the crystals. I may have also used too much solvent to the acenatilide leading to a smaller recovery of crystals. There may have also been impurities present in the flask used to heat the mixture creating impurities in my sample. Theory:

The purpose of this experiment is to select a recrystallizing solvent to be able to purify and separate pure acetanilide from a crude acetanillide. Organic compounds that have been synthesized in the laboratory or isolated from natural sources often contain impurities. Recrystallization is a process which removes impurities from solid organic compounds that are solids at room temperature. The solubility of a compound increases with temperature. As the solution cools the solubility of the compound decreases and crystals begin to form and grow.

Pure compounds can be produced from recrystallization. As the heated solution of the compound cools, a pure seed crystal of the compound forms. Additional molecules attach to the crystal in layers forming a crystal lattice. Crystals have a higher affinity for similar molecules than they do from impurities in the solution, removing impurities from the mixture.

We selected a suitable recrystallizing solvent from water, ethane, acetone and petroleum ether. A suitable solvent should dissolve the pure acetinillide at increased temperatures but not completely soluble in the cold solvent. After selecting the solvent, a sample of crude acetinillide is dissolved in boiling solvent. The compound is slowly cooled to room temperature then cooled in an ice bath to promote maximum crystal growth formation.

Lastly, the crystals are recovered through vacuum filtration, dried, and their mass recorded. The major criteria for an ideal recrystallizing solvent are that the compound must be insoluble in the solvent at room temperature, must be soluble at high temperature, the boiling point must be lower than that of the compound, and an abundant amount of crystals must be recovered from the cool solvent.

The Execution Of Gomburza Summary

The priests, Gomez, Burgos and Zamora were jailed in Fort Santiago before they were tried for rebellion. Priests both regular and secular were allowed to see them. Each one of them had a confessor. During the trial, the government failed to prove convincingly that the accused were really connected with the January mutiny. The governor-general promised to present documents to prove that the three priests were guilty of rebellion which to many was actually a mutiny. But he never presented any document and to this day, no document had been found to show that Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora were in any way, connected with the mutiny. Nevertheless, they were sentenced to death by garrote. On February 17, 1872, the three priests marched from Fort Santiago to Bagumbayan Field (now Luneta). It is said that Zamora loast his mind and silently accepted to be garroted.

He, together with Burgos and Gomez maintainedtheir innocence until the end. While they were being executed one by one —first Zamora, then Gomez and lastly Burgos — the witnesses of the event took off theirhats and knelt to pray for the souls of the innocent priests. The Spaniards who were present thinking that the Filipinos were preparing to rise in revolt,fled toward the city. The importance of the execution of the three priests rested on the fact that the Filipinos who witnessed the execution began to think and feel as Filipinos not as Ilocanos, Tagalogs, visayans Bicolanos, and others They suspected that because they belonged to a different race. the Spaniards who had always felt superior over the Filipinos took them for beasts of burden. From this time forward, they began to feel the necessity, for unity. Rizal who was eleven years ols at that time, would later dedicate his second novel El Filibusterismo ( the rebel) to the memory of the three martyred priests.
