Sociology In My Society Sample College Essay

Robert Alan states that the difference in culture and values among the people should not separate them from each other; the diversity in culture should impact a collective strength that is beneficial to the whole of humanity. Living a life entails making decisions, and everyone thinks that obviously, every individual makes their own choices. Nevertheless, it has never been right because invisible influence exists: a series of hidden forces that shape a person’s behavior. Social influence is more like a magnet that sometimes attracts and leads us to do the same things as other people, while in other cases, it repels and leads us into doing things differently from others. The desire to be different pushes us to pick on something else even when it makes us less happy because we have an antagonistic desire to be unique from the rest of the pack. This paper seeks to explain how social forces shaped respect as my core value, how agents of socialization and a global event have built this value in me, and a reflection of how social forces have influenced respect as a core value in me.

Respect has always been a value in me appreciated by myself and everyone I happen to interact with at all times. Respect entails the ability within me to value and honor other people, their words, and actions, even when we hardly approve or share everything they do. It is the art to accept other people without any trials to change them. I have always respected people’s attitudes or thoughts without expecting them to be otherwise. However, respect in me began with personal respect. Self-respect is essential as it has enabled me to value other people to the extent that I can value myself at all times.

Socialization happens to be a lifetime process that educates us on interacting with others and learning about people’s social expectations. We learn to walk, talk, and feed ourselves about the norms of behaviors that keep us fit into society through socialization. Most essential socialization happens in childhood though it is a continuous lifetime activity (Liu et al., 2020). Various agents are influential in socialization, as discussed.

First, one might think that they can only be influenced by people they know or the people we are often interacting with, but then it is evident that the skimpy fact that someone else around watching us can change our behavior. The fact that someone else makes us perform worse even when the persons say nothing ultimately. The fact that I had people watching me and the people I engaged in talks with really motivated the building of my respect as a core value positively. I wanted to carry myself as the descent and courteous man among the people around therefore building respect for myself and others.

Secondly, peers have also proven to be a powerful tool of influence. The youths can encourage individuals to work harder and be better if exploited in the correct ways. When NBA teams were faintly behind at halftime, they were more likely to win after halftime because of the pressure from their peers. Telling the team that they are behind the competition leads the team or the individual to put in more hours and improve the outcome. Though the peers have always been viewed negatively by smoking, drinking, and getting into trouble, the very same peers can also be motivating. Regular interactions with my fellow peers shaped the respect belief in me. Whenever I acted disrespectfully, they always pointed out that they would challenge me to make up for my wrong and always be better. The peers also provided a background that has enabled me to practice and build my respect all along.

Thirdly, a family consisting of parents or guardians can also influence the values of the children. In most cases, when the parents carry themselves with love and respect, the children will also be motivated to act with love and respect. Children will always be motivated to build and develop on the positive sides of their parents. However, it is notable that children can also adopt addictive characteristics like smoking, drinking, and violence from their parents. Parents will always be an achieved status that I am often proud of for the foundation they laid in my life. Parents with these characteristics risk influencing their children to the same paths. However, loving parents with vast actions depicting respect and other positive values and beliefs can influence their children. I grew up among parents who were always eager to help, always listening, and apologetic whenever they messed up. It is fascinating how the same was easily influenced as I mostly endeavored to be like them and even a better version of them. Whenever I did something wrong, they could point it out, and I would apologize and feel included and given a chance to be the better version of me. I built my respectful nature from them and always worked on being the better version of me yet achieving the best version of me.

Similarly, schools are an essential agent of childhood socialization. The primary purpose of the school is to relinquish knowledge and educate on the life skills like adhering to instructions and deadlines. Students learn from the academic modules prepared by teachers and administrators. We can learn specific social skills through interaction with teachers, staff, and other students. I learned to obey authority by obeying my teachers and the school prefects. From the school environment, I learned to be quiet, wait, and act interested even when I am not interested. I learned many things from the teachers that they did not intend to teach. Respect was among the various things I learned without necessarily being compelled to learn and know. I listened to instructions by the teachers, respected them, and responded to the bell without being chased around to follow the rules.

Lastly, religion was also an informal institution that enabled me to focus on the institution’s practices. Religion is an essential platform of socialization among many individuals. There are synagogues, temples, churches, mosques, and other similar religious communities that facilitate the gathering of people to worship and learn. The institutions teach the people interaction with religious material and the values for upright growth. Religious institutions teach on gender norms and facilitate enactment by socialization. Organized religious nurture socialized values passed on through the society. From religion, I learned to respect the rules of the church leaders and the various leaders. I was following the rules without necessarily being followed around or forced to participate in building the respectful aspect in me. Respect has been my master status in the institution, highlighting my presence. I also learned to keep time and stay by the required without being compelled, even when sometimes I felt like the rules were too severe and demanding to follow.

When growing up, I familiarized myself with the Global Code of Ethics, a set of standards that guides the professional conduct of social workers internationally. However, through this code of values, one can learn to be respectful and socialize effectively with the environment. The codes built belief in me and encouraged the self-improvement of my skills. The code stipulates ethical standards by which the public holds social work professionals to account for their actions. Through integrity and human relationships, I learned about being respectful to be accommodated by the world and the people I get to interact with. Learning about the codes of ethics built my being because I was hopeful that I would be a social worker and society would expect certain traits. I was influenced by the many social workers who were given prizes for observing integrity in their course of action and wanted to uphold the same standards in the future, and with time I developed the aspect of respect without any pressure.

Other social forces influencing respect is my core value include self-belief. A belief includes the idea that I hold to be true. I am always willing to defend respect as my core value because it forms part of my belief system. I have always upheld respect as an essential value because it has enabled me to acquire a lot of favors from the school, home, religion, and all the surrounding institutions. I have also received the same in showing respect, which is a value I strongly believe in.

Similarly, a belief often develops into a personal value when commitment grows, and they see it as an essential aspect. Respect has outgrown into a personal value has enabled me to make rational and responsible decisions. I have built my skills and developed them to be trusted by my parents and friends. My parents can confidently delegate duties and listen to my ideas in the family because of my respectful nature.

The presentation of self in everyday life is a book in which Erving Goffman believes that when individuals contact other persons, the individuals attempt to control the impression that others may make on them by changing their setting, appearance, and behavior (1959). The person, the individual, interacts with tries to from and retrieve information from the individual. Many data have been collected by the Global Survey Service and supported the theory in the book. Through my contact with the family members, the teachers, my peers, and the religious leaders, I built my respectful nature by changing my behaviors to fit the environment and portray a better version of myself. Through the regular changes, I adopted respect to my core value and positively influenced many people around me.

In conclusion, values help shape society by offering an overview of good and evil. Living up to the cultures of the society can be tricky sometimes. Values only suggest the expected behavior of people but are not an accurate reflection of the people’s behavior. Various theories and concepts strongly analyze how social forces shape the core values in an individual. Respect is not only a core value but rather a personal value that I have grown to embrace and live up for because of the many changes it has opened for my good. A society is built by the founding values of the region’s individuals.

Specific War Happening In A Country (Interview Writing Assignment) Essay Example

Abdul Aziz is a 23-year-old Yemeni national young man who has witnessed war periods during his entire life in Yemen. The interviewee (Abdul Aziz) is tall, slim, and brown and wears a thobe (Islamic clothing for men). Abdul Aziz has long dark hair, which is curly in some ways. Since he was born 23 years ago, Abdul Aziz has never known peace because the war continues even after peace efforts bear fruit. Abdul Aziz’s academic life has constantly been interrupted by continuous war periods. For example, he stopped school at the age of 14. He was supposed to join high school but could not because of political instability, which continued affecting the country during this age. Presently, Abdul Aziz lives in the United States, granted asylum because of war. In this regard, he is still planning to go back to school and further his education to improve his skills and competencies. He hopes to further his education and get better job opportunities to utilize his skills and competencies.

What do you think is the Primary Cause of the Crisis in Yemen?

[Abdul Aziz tries to think hard to provide an answer and seems not to be ready to answer the question. However, he gains courage and explains]. The Yemeni civil war has been fought since 2014 and has been caused by conflicts between various factions. For example, there has always been a conflict between the Houthi armed movement and the Yemeni government, claiming responsibility for governing the country (Arjona, p. 6). The Yemeni government can embrace the negotiated political settlement with the factions to avoid the war. Many political divisions have led to the escalation of the political crisis in Yemen. The Houthi takeover, increased fuel prices, Saudi intervention, and military division are some of the factors. For example, the pressure from the international community such as the World Bank and IMF led to promised loans to the country based on economic reforms. The interference by neighboring countries has continued to contribute to the crisis in Yemen. For example, in March 2015, various regional countries with the United States and other Western countries have been fuelling the war in Yemen. As a result, the situation deteriorated, leading to more problems.

How Can This War Affect the Politics of the Middle East?

[Abdul Aziz hesitates for a moment as if to form an answer]. The crisis emanated after conflicts between different factions in the country and the failure of political processes, which were supposed to bring stability after the 2011 uprising (Brandt, p. 10). “Such a crisis led to the president handing over power to his deputy”. The Yemeni war has affected the Middle East leading to a humanitarian, military, economic, and political crisis. For example, the Yemeni war led to a financial conflict to control the country’s economy and the entire Middle East, leading to a political stalemate. In addition, the war in Yemen has led to some external influences such as Saudi Arabia and Iran who have been known to finance armed groups within the country. As a result, the war in Yemen has led to sustained destabilization and internal fighting. The war had also led to weak national security capabilities and the proliferation of small arms leading to more security issues in the Middle East. There are millions of weapons in Yemen, facilitating conflict and violence on a larger scale.

What changes would you suggest in solving the conflict between the warring factions in the country?

[Abdul Aziz stares at me in the eye and shakes his head as if to demonstrate disapproval for the question]. The international approach is the best remedy to solve the ongoing Yemeni war. It is time to change how things have always been done and it is not business as usual (Egel, p. 8). In this regard, the international community should mediate the warring factions to come to an amicable solution. De-escalation of violence is one of the best political solutions to the war situation in the country. Building an enduring or lasting peace in Yemen is the way forward in solving the crisis. Negotiated ceasefires are a good strategy of handling the political and economic crisis in Yemen. Supporting peace processes to tackle issues of humanitarian, economic, and security situations are some of the best strategies. In addition, there is a need to support and strengthen local capacities for peace for promoting peaceful coexistence. For example, the use of civil society and youth groups may help to implement small projects on how people can coexistence peacefully. In addition, conducting public relations campaigns can provide an educational purpose to support peaceful coexistence.

How has living in a war-torn country affected your development as a person and your life in general?

[Abdul Aziz puts his right hand into the cheek and observes a moment of silence for some few seconds without responding]. Living in Yemen as a war-torn area is one of the most horrific things a person can go through (Fraihat, p. 9). I have been “deprived of my rights to traveling, entertainment, education, and leisure” as a young man. In this regard, I have been subjected to subsequent abuses which seem to curtail my freedom of association, expression, and movement. Living in Yemen provide economic, social, humanitarian, and political crisis of monumental proportions. In this regard, the war in Yemen provides the country with one of the most pronounced humanitarian crisis in the world. Therefore, children have been robbed off their futures and cannot complete their education. The inability of people to complete their studies is has caused the vicious cycle of poverty. Since the escalation of the crisis in 2015, the country has become very problematic for the country’s children. As a result of the war, less than half of healthcare facilities are functioning and a few which remain operational lack the basic amenities.

What is the most traumatizing experience you ever had while living in a war zone territory like Yemen?

[Abdul Aziz becomes sad because of this question and suddenly touches his right cheek with his hand]. Because of the war situation in Yemen, I have developed mental problems. In this regard, I often overthink when I think about how I have suffered and lost some of my close family members because of the war. Like my uncle……[tears start rolling down his cheeks and his voice fades away]. However, he suddenly gains the courage to narrate how he lost his uncle when some armed militia attacked him in cold blood slashing him to death (Brandt, p. 4). In addition, this incident has consistently made him traumatized, and has mental issues which will not fade away. Although there are so many things that Abdul Aziz has hated about the way, losing his uncle was the climax of such issues.

What Career Path do You Wish to Pursue in the Future, and What Will its Relevance be in Resolving this Ongoing Conflict in Your Country?

[For the first time, Abdul Aziz smiles sheepishly as if to lack confidence on how to answer that query]. I wish to study international relations (diplomacy) and conflict resolutions that suit our current predicament of war (Arjona, p. 11). Even though I have always wanted to be an Engineer, our war situation has influenced me to change my career plan. I need to “understand issues to do with conflict resolutions and peace-building”. In addition, I also feel like being a public speaker will help in the war situation because it will capture people’s attention and help prevent further crises. Being a public speaker will also help involve and influence the audience who might have played a role in the war. Therefore, it will help persuade people to stop certain things that could have contributed to the war situation. As a public speaker, I will also have the ability and moral ground to encourage people to stop the war to study. I am a victim of a war situation in Yemen where I could not finish school because of the crisis. At the tender age of 14, I stopped my education and could not join high school.

Assuming you had the power to make changes, what exactly would you do to ensure your fellows and the future generations get educated equally?

[Abdul Aziz adjusts his posture as if to move the seat forward and gaze at me]. I would primarily focus on security and peace-building initiatives given a chance. Others issues like social and economic development will take a back seat for the time being until I focus more on peace efforts. Social welfare will also be my principal concern, like offering free healthcare for small children (Brandt, p. 4). In addition, I would involve the international donors or sponsors to support educational programs with long-term funding. Furthermore, I would ensure all teachers or learning instructors get regular pay so that children can continue to grow and learn. There is also the need to discourage or stop the attacks on educational institutions. In the recent past, there has been many such attacks on schools which have been leading to a crisis in the educational sector. I would involve international bodies like UNICEF who would call all the stakeholders in the country to uphold the rights of the children. In this regard, such an initiative would promote educational opportunities for such children and promote a conducive environment to work together to achieve an inclusive and lasting peace.

What role does the international community have to play regarding the war in Yemen?

[Abdul Aziz stares at me as if he does not have an answer and is almost overcome by emotions]. “Even with the willingness of the international community to assist the suffering people of Yemen, there is a failure of providing food aid for the people which is the worst international dilemma facing the country.” Abdul Aziz shakes his head and is overcome by emotions. The international community like the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and other leading powers have a relevant role in peace and diplomatic efforts in Yemen (Egel, p. 4). For example, the US economic and political policies have a leading role. “The US can closely evaluate and sometimes reject arms sales to the country”. In addition, it can impose sanctions on the country that will ensure rebels do not have a regular supply of dangerous weapons. “Thus, even with the willingness of the international community to assist the suffering people of Yemen, there is a failure of providing food aid for the people which is the worst international dilemma facing the country.” Abdul Aziz shakes his head and is overcome by emotions.

All in all, Yemen is one of the leading countries affected by war in the world. Since 2014, Yemen has never seen peace because of conflicts between different warring factions. For example, the Houthi Movement and the Yemeni government have always had intermittent conflicts leading to further crises.

Sportswear Market Analysis Free Essay

Sportswear Market

The sports equipment sector is continuously developing because of the increased acceptance of modern sports technology and current trends among the young population. This market is divided into two sections: sports apparel and fitness apparel. Each segment’s target market is distinct. According to worldwide industry experts, the United States has the world’s biggest sports and fitness apparel market (Business Wire, 2020). The report’s geographic segmentation covers market value and volume for important countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and North America. Adidas, Nike, and Puma are key companies in the worldwide sports and fitness industry.

Firms and their Market Positions

The global sportswear sector is highly diversified, with low-cost firms competing for market share alongside top designer name brands. In the United States, Nike is the leading multinational sports corporation brand and the world’s top brand in athletic gear and footwear. Nike’s worldwide income exceeds its main competitors, Adidas and Puma combined. North America is a significant market for Nike, providing for half of the company’s global revenue in 2020, primarily via footwear sales (Statista, 2020). Nike’s prosperity may be partly attributed to the company’s marketing technique and sponsorship deals with well-known players and professional sports teams.

Puma and Adidas were once owned by the same company, Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, established by Rudolf and Adolf Dassler. The corporation disbanded after a feud between the two brothers, culminating in forming the two well-known sporting brands, Adidas and Puma. Adidas is Europe’s largest sportswear manufacturer and the world’s second, behind only Nike, with annual sales of over 20 billion euros and a brand value of roughly 16.5 billion dollars. Adidas will employ 62,285 employees worldwide by 2020. Adidas, like Nike, sees footwear as its most significant segment (Mordor Intelligence, 2020). The footwear segment produced more than half of the Adidas Group’s net revenues in 2020.

Puma, another well-known athletic brand, intends to be the globe’s foremost appealing sports lifestyle company in the long term. Europe and the Americas are Puma’s most profitable markets, accounting for more than 75% of the company’s consolidated sales in 2020 (Statista, 2020). With partnerships with fashionistas such as Alexander McQueen and Sergio Rossi, as well as artist Rihanna, Puma has been attempting to add more edge, originality, and distinctiveness to its creations. Cooperation with celebrities and fashionistas is a typical technique these big sports businesses use to retain their market share by widening their product offerings.

Nike Porters Five Forces

Rivalry/Pre-Existing Competition – High

The rivalry is fierce due to several worldwide level corporations that compete directly with Nike. Nike’s main rivals are Adidas and Puma, making the battle fierce. Nike is the top big player in sports apparel in America with 18.3 percent of the market share, followed by Adidas with 6%. (Statista, 2020). Nike continues to dominate the sports footwear industry in America with a 21.1 percent share, while Adidas lags with a 5% share of the total market (Statista, 2018). Competitors are spending a lot of money building a brand and obtaining more market share to take the lead, which makes the rivalry fierce.

Substitute Threat – Moderate

Consumers have a great variety of sports footwear choices that may replace Nike’s athletic footwear since there are many other firms in the same sector. On the other hand, Nike mitigates this danger due to the high quality of their sports footwear. Nike’s primary rivals are Puma and Adidas, although other smaller local businesses also create and sell shoes, clothes, and accessories at cheaper rates. As an alternative, fake athletic shoes threaten to reduce Nike’s profit and sales margins (ABC News, 2016). Customers who purchase low-quality counterfeit Nike sports footwear may harm consumers’ perceptions and Nike’s brand loyalty. Nike’s substitution threat is modest.

Threat of New Entrants – Minimal

New entrants are quite prevalent in the sports footwear sector. On the other hand, Nike has a substantial market share in this business and may employ scale economies to lower prices. The growing popularity of internet commerce raises the prospect of new entrants into the industry. Nike additionally mitigates these risks by using learning curve efficiencies. Nike has learned and developed successful cost-cutting tactics for manufacturing, marketing, and distribution throughout time. This makes it harder for new competitors to participate. It took them a long time and a lot of money to get to where they are now. Those same resources may not be accessible to new businesses. The danger posed by new entrants is minimal.

Threats of Buyer leverage

Nike has a big customer base. Thus, individual customers do not constitute a significant danger. Customers of Nike experience minimal switching costs when moving from purchasing Nike products to one of their rivals’ goods, which increases the danger. Generally, buyer leverage poses minimal risk.

Threat of Suppliers leverage

Nike’s clients have little to no bargaining power. Its competitors are not insignificant if not many. In addition to Adidas, there are other competitors, such as Puma. Nike is up against a slew of various local and international rivals. Customers’ switching expenses are negligible. This force is mitigated to some degree by the caliber and marketing of Nike’s goods. Nike prioritizes performance and design. Because of this, it has been capable of establishing consumer loyalty. Consequently, individual buyers’ negotiation power, which is presently low to moderate, is lessened.

SWOT Analysis of Nike

  • Nike is a highly competitive corporation that manufactures items for the world’s greatest athletes.
  • Nike is an internationally renowned brand that is well-known around the globe, making its brand stronger and superior to other brands. The brand is of the highest quality, has a long lifespan, and outlast other brands.
  • Nike distinguishes itself from the competition by allowing consumers to personalize sneakers to their liking, meeting customers’ wants/needs.

  • Nike’s revenue is based on the footwear sector, yet many individuals are price-aware and are unwilling to pay Nike’s pricing.
  • The majority of Nike’s revenue comes from sales to retailers. Retailers frequently offer the buyer a comparable price. Retailers attempt to get Nike to cut their pricing to make a profit.
  • Nike receives poor exposure due to their hostile working circumstances abroad, which provides Nike a negative image of their brand.
  • Furthermore, the company has a limited presence in new markets, owing to worries about pricing, counterfeit, and patent protection.

  • Nike’s significant potential is to begin selling in regions such as China and India, where millions of new customers are increasingly interested in current trends.
  • Nike has developed accessories and other goods apart from its footwear section, which will aid Nike in generating money outside of its footwear area.
  • Nike can provide high-quality items at affordable costs while still making a good profit and maintaining revenue.

  • Nike has to enhance their image of labor circumstances abroad; many people will not buy their items because of these labor conditions, which have given them a negative reputation.
  • Nike must stay up with other rivals; they are performing well so far, but they must not falter; Adidas is proving a major danger, causing Nike’s sponsors to transfer to the Adidas brand.

Analysis of the Nike Value Chain

Nike Primary Activities

The primary operations in Nike value chain evaluation are firmly tied to product generation and delivery. They are classified into five major areas by Porter’s model, which includes:

Inbound Logistics (IBL):

Nike’s success is built on the principles of sustainability and quality, which are mirrored in inbound logistics. To provide high-quality goods and services, Nike maintains a supply chain that comprises suppliers, shipping, internal distribution, and quality control. Nike products are manufactured in 567 sites in 42 countries. Nike is also serious about environmental protection and emissions reduction (Edrawsoft, 2022).

Manufacture, assembling, packaging, and testing of goods are all part of operations, including equipment maintenance and repair. It demonstrates the significance of operational operations in creating value and establishing a competitive edge.

Outbound Logistics:

Cover all of the firm’s operations to store and deliver commodities to consumers while ensuring that the products are accessible to consumers immediately as possible.

Sales and marketing:

The promotion strategy, salesforce advertisement, pricing, and channel distribution are essential aspects of Nike’s sales and marketing operations.

Clients’ retention and a pleasant customer experience are dependent on services provided before and after the transaction. As a result, the business has a massive number of happy customers. Nike has several efforts in play to maintain its customer happiness. Nike’s loyalty program, for example, had over 100 million customers in 2017.

Nike Support Activities:

They perform an important function and are found in many organizations. To offer a fundamental foundation, most of these support activities encompass all areas of elementary activities.

Business infrastructure operations include quality management, legal relations management, finance, planning, accounting, and strategic management. Nike’s infrastructure projects help the company optimize the whole supply chain (Edrawsoft, 2022). These processes increase efficiency, lower overhead costs, and ensure that the system flows efficiently.

Nike employs around 80,000 personnel worldwide in various roles. The organization creates a healthy working environment and encourages people to develop their abilities and connect with its diverse and inclusive culture.

Technology Development:

Research, technical innovation, and quality of products are critical since Nike promotes itself as a pioneer in revolutionary sportswear. Nike has made technology and researches a priority in product development, as well as in its equipment, machinery, manufacturing techniques, and waste disposal.

Nike’s Global Procurement team oversees the procurement process. They choose suppliers who can deliver high-quality materials at a cheap cost, as well as those that share their values of sustainable development and environmental protection.

This Nike Inc. research demonstrates that the firm has the necessary qualities to sustain its worldwide dominance in the athletic footwear, equipment, and clothing markets. Nike has a well-established brand reputation that is well-liked by most of the market. It is a symbol of luxury and class, and it has benefitted from significant celebrity sponsorships that let each purchase participate in something larger than themselves. Nike’s purpose is to emphasize stakeholders’ issues as part of its corporate sustainability strategy (Nike, 2022). However, if the organization refuses to adjust to the times, high prices and difficult working conditions may generate problems. The company must address concerns about competition, working conditions, imitation, and patent protection. Therefore, Nike Inc. should reconsider its strategies in these areas. The company must also collaborate with government organizations to address the issue of patent protection. Expansion into developing markets and the expansion of product lines may create a potential for future growth. Still, failure to outperform the competitors and handle important brand issues may result in significant obstacles down the track. Overall, Nike is a fantastic company that will have to work incredibly hard in the future to remain successful.
