A country’s manufacturing sector can suffer if the international community imposes sanctions on the market that it serves. On the other hand, social trends dictate the buying behavior of consumers. Today, the global market has different views regarding the features that a good smartphone must possess (Page 2014, p. 15). Indeed, variations in consumer preferences force manufacturing companies to implement changes that they have never envisaged.

Political and technological environments are likely to impact the smartphone manufacturing industry. The political climate influences policies that govern the manufacture of smartphones. On the other hand, the technical environment dictates the viability of the gadgets produced. The exit of Britain from the European Union was a political decision that can affect the country’s previous relations with other economic blocks.

Vertu positions itself as a company that manufactures smartphones that comply with contemporary fashion. As a result, the company has established an exclusive market. It does not encounter stiff competition in this market. On the other hand, Bullit Group manufactures smartphones that are best for industrial setups. The company’s smartphones are mostly used in the construction industry.

The move to focus on the building industry has given Bullit Group a competitive edge. A majority of smartphone manufacturing companies target the traditional market. An analysis of the smartphone manufacturing businesses which operate in Britain shows that most of them are new start-ups. The primary advantage is that individuals who head the manufacturing plants have vast experience in the production of smartphones because they are former employees of major companies like Apple and Samsung. The leaders can help the companies to develop smartphones that can compete in both the local and international markets. All that the leaders require is formulating the right strategies.

The Interrelationship Between Leadership And Management

Introduction

Management and leadership are two key success factors of an organization. It is imperative that all individuals who are willing to take leadership positions to understand their superiors and subordinates. This would assist them in understanding the various leadership styles to apply in different situations. Ultimately, this would result to greater efficiency and success in the workplace. Tasks would be achieved in a shorter time and much more diligently (Bittel, 1974).

Body

Some of the main lessons learned in the week include; the interrelationship between leadership and management. Effective leadership cannot be achieved without the individual’s clear understanding of management skills. Though people may have the traits of a good leader, they may fail in managerial positions if they do not understand their participation in management functions.

These include controlling, organizing and planning. Secondly, excellent managers must understand how much they can depend on their subordinates. This can be identified through planned tests. A manager may ask their subordinates questions to which they know the answers. This would expose their skills and knowledge of the tasks laid before them. Thirdly, leaders must understand the different leadership styles to apply in different situations.

Some subordinates may call for a direct approach while others may perform better under the indirect approach. In other cases, a manager may use the “guided democracy” method. This involves giving chances to subordinates to participate in the running of some areas of responsibility. Though their suggestions may be solicited, they may not be involved in the ultimate decision-making (Bittel, 1974).

The importance of the three main lessons exceeds the mere usefulness in the every day running of the organization by a manager. They are the key success factors that distinguish between legitimate managers and incompetent managers. The knowledge of the interrelationship between leadership and management is of importance to me because one cannot thrive without the other. In the workplace, I must exhibit outstanding leadership alongside adequate controlling, organizing and planning.

The knowledge of subordinates’ skills is of importance to a manager while delegating authority. Some employees may perform better than others while others may have specialized knowledge in a given area. As a manager, I would assign tasks based on the skills of each employee under my supervision. Finally, differentiating between the characters of different individuals would ensure that the manager applies the most appropriate leadership style to manage his workforce.

Where subordinates show responsibility in the workplace, I would adopt a “guided democracy” leadership style. This would involve soliciting for their opinions and views in the completion of different tasks. Such knowledge would ultimately guide me through a successful term in my leadership; resulting to optimum results.

Conclusion

The three main lessons are applicable in the daily performance at the workplace. In times when I will hold managerial positions, I will maintain a balance between exemplary leadership skills and management functions that I may be required to fulfill. The knowledge of subordinates’’ skills will help ensure avoid inappropriate performance of tasks. I will ensure that all members receive as much responsibility as they can handle. Finally, before embarking on guiding a set of employees, I will take time to study their unique characters to avoid clash of interests in the process of completing tasks and assignments.

The analysis seeks to understand how the organization interacts with its environment. This understanding helps in improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness through increased capacity of the organization to deploy resources intelligently (Chapman, 2013). Organizations should be careful when interpreting results from the strategic analysis. Friend and Zehle (2010) posit that one of the important aspects of “strategic analysis is choosing the tool to use to achieve the objectives of the analysis” (p. 112). The study also involved perusing some of the company documents, magazines, and websites to gather relevant information. This report has been compiled using the information that was gathered from those sources. Therefore, it is limited to the case of Arabtec and its subsidiaries. Currently, prices of construction materials are going up, which is attributed to global inflation and the increasing cost of energy. Consequently, construction projects are becoming expensive. The company needs to look at these issues because it can be a burden to the clients or reduce the profit margin.

Environment

The construction industry has not been quick to respond to environmental issues. However, there is an increasing concern and hence regulation towards the reduction of wastes and carbon emissions. These regulations are forcing companies to improve their operations while also, many clients are demanding responsible design approaches. Environmental responsibility is relevant to all companies regardless of their sizes and areas of operation.

  • Due to the increasing regulations forcing companies to improve their operations in planning, construction, warehousing, and operation management, the company should strengthen these aspects to ensure full compliance with statutory requirements. The resulting benefits would be improved reputation and minimum risk in operation
  • The company should properly manage its logistical operations so that the costs of operation are minimized. This move would protect it from responding to the escalating costs of materials by increasing the prices of services. Therefore, its services will remain competitive.

Conclusion

Strategic analysis entails research to understand the environment of operations for an organization. Through strategic evaluation, an organization can identify the necessary corrective actions and the best time to apply them to bring back the performance in line with business objectives. The tools used in strategic analysis include the PESTEL analysis, which analyzes the business environment and the SWOT to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of an organization, and the Porter’s Five Force analysis, which analyzes the market entry forces.
