“A lot of children spend more than 40 hrs per week using some type of media” (Anderson & Bushman) children use the computer at school and at home to do their school work. With today’s society everything is computerized. They also use computer to play games and play video games on TV using consoles. Due to the increase in crime and child abduction, parents prefer for children to stay indoors so they can be safe. Because the children stay indoors there is nothing much to do other than watch television or play video games. Parents are too busy to take their children to the park to play instead they purchase video games to keep the children entertained.
Some parents use these video games as babysitters instead of spending time with their kids. Children are parked in front of the TV all day long. There is a lot of peer pressure to have the latest video games and electronics. The children want to have what there peers have at school so they don’t feel left out. Some parents believe that video games are just harmless fun, they don’t correlate that with repeated exposure to violence children can become just that ” violent”. Ignorance is the worst mistake that parents make when it comes to purchasing games for their children. They don’t take time to investigate or research the content of the game.
They don’t even look at the ratings of on video game.” Many games involving violence by cartoon like characters are classified as appropriate for the general audience” Anderson & Bushman). Just because it has cartoon features on it does not appropriate for kids. It is the parents responsibility to make sure the game is appropriate before purchasing it. Video games are very highly marketed.
“The most heavily marketed and consumed games are the violent ones” (Anderson & Bushman). This is what attracts many parents and teenagers to purchase the game. Video games can be good too they are not all bad. Some games can help the child learn patience because they have to one step at a time. One goal has to be accomplished before they can advance to the next step in the game.
Video games are also said to have a greater potential for education a claim made by MIT educator Henry Jenkins(Jagodzinski). Playing video games can also be fun they help relieve stress. Video games also make a lot of kids smarter by enabling them to search for new solutions, to problems, meet challenges of technology form and test hypotheses (Jagodzinski) Video games have a lot of negative effects too. To start with video games have become more realistic and sophisticated. Some connect to the internet which can allow children and adolescents to play online with unknown adults and peers”(AACAP 2006) When playing online children have no idea who is on the other side of the screen.
It can be a child molester or some kind of perpetrator pretending to be a peer. This may lead the teen to release some personal information endangering not only themselves but their whole family. Because of the realistic measure of the games, some children after playing for long periods of time they cannot differentiate what is real from what is unreal. “Studies of children exposed to violence have shown that they can become immune or numb to the horror of violence, imitate the violence they see and show more aggressive behavior” (AACAP 2006). This might be the reason why there are so many shootings in high schools, colleges and universities around in the country.
For example the shootings at columbine high might have happened because these teenagers spent numerous amounts of time playing video games. “Violent media increases aggression by teaching observers how to aggress, by priming aggressive cognition, by increasing arousal or by creating an aggressive affective state” (Anderson & Bushman). Children learn by watching and observing. They also learn by listening and doing. When they are exposed to the repeated violence in the video game they can become immune to it. They will think that its normal to be aggressive to their peers because of what they see when playing the game.
Most games encourage aggression one has to kill the opponent before moving to the next stage of the game. “Video game experiments show that graphic violence such as that including blood, realistic portrayals of violence and rewarded violence are likely to increase aggression” (Shibuya, Sakamoto, & Yukatawa). Children’s brain is like a sponge it absorbs everything that it hears or see.
Their brain is still developing and learning a lot in the process. Given that the danger of physical pain drops out when playing a video game, the risk holds no bounds. Video games enable vicarious experience to take place: the thrill with no danger(Jagodzinski). Some teenagers will not know how to leave the virtual world behind and continue with the real world one they are done playing. If they do the same thing as they were doing in the virtual world there are consequences to be held. If they go out there and shoot someone they will be held accountable and have to spend most of their life in a jail cell. That is a life wasted just because they were not able to separate fantasy from reality.
Some children are addicted to video game. They only feel alive when playing the game but not when they are participating in regular activities (Jagodznski). They become antisocial all they care about is playing the game. Their grades at school might drop because they can’t concentrate on school. All they think about when they are at school is when they will get home so that they can play the game.
There is also an increase in obesity because children are spending most of their time sitting on the couch playing video games. There is no physical activity at all. Even though some gaming companies like Nintendo and Microsoft have new games that involve some movement when playing. This does not compare to the exercise kids get when playing outside. When kids play outside with their friends they build their social skills which are important for their future.
Another benefit kids get from playing outside is the fresh air they get and the stress-relieving endorphins that are released by exercise. Some video games can be hazardous to their health. “ small print warning on some game packages state explicitly that epileptic seizure can occur from overuse and eye strain” (Jagodzinski). Most consumers do not read the fine print and manufacturers know that.
That is why its in fine print so that just incase something does happen such as a person suffers a seizure while playing the game the manufacturers will not be held accountable. Playing video games has its positive and negative effects. The negative effects tend to be higher than the positive effects. Everything has to be done in moderation so that means that kids can play their video games but not all the time. Parents need to set limits on how much time kids can play the game per each day and make sure to follow through with consequences if rules are not followed.
Consumers need to be educated about the consequences of playing video games. They can make smarter choices by researching the content of the game before purchasing it. They can also look at the rating of the games before allowing their kids to play it. Just because it has a cartoon character on it doesn’t necessarily mean its safe. Parents can be proactive by being involved in their kids’ life. Learning what is wrong, what they are thinking or doing, being involved in their school to get the whole picture of their kids life. They can also play the games with their kids so they can have a clue what kind of content is in the game.
The Impact Of Violent Media On Children Today Depicted In Whodunit-The Media, An Essay By Maggie Cutler
Video games are causing behavioral problems in children, they see the violence and they think that is how real life is. In the first paragraph Cutler gives some evidence how violence in the media is affecting children. Some of the evidence Cutler given is that the television council accounted that per-hour rate for violence and sexual content had triple from 1989 to 1999.
The violence and sexual content that is shown is having a big impact on children in a bad way. It is causing children to act out and do crimes because in their minds they think it is right. Also television is responsible for about 10 percent of violence in young children. Also about 250 murders and 12,000 other crimes are from video games and television alone. The crime rate keeps going up because of the crime children see on tv and games. Cutler gives some good evidence but as she mentions in the essay that some evidence about the true fact. The facts she given estimate evidence that she had did some research on.
Also Cutler said some believe that the video game Doom had inspired bloodbath at Columbine but researcher are not for sure. In second paragraph some studies shows that boys are tend watch
tv with violence in because it is more fun to watch. Some studies think that kids seek out shows
to express feeling that already have (686). The violence shows and games that are played are to believe give kids an adrenaline boost while playing. If games and television are given children and adrenaline rush children are most likely are going to do the crime they see. Also Cutler mentions that violent in the media is making it seem glamorous and righteous. So if violence is seemed as glamorous and righteous children are going to see it as normal to do.
Some believe that violence of the media is not affecting children. Instead they believe it is the way children were raised and how poor or rich they are. Some studies believe that poor kids are more likely to harm by graphic violence then a rich kid. Some studies believe that rich kids have a balance in their lives and a poor kid doesn’t. I believe it don’t matter if you are rich or poor violence of crime and affect you. Rich kids play violence games and watch violence of tv just as a poor kid would. Violence can affect any kid no matter who they are.
Cutler gives some studies from The American Psychological Association’s Commission on Violence and Youth and how they think early parental abuse and neglect and poverty put a child at a much a higher risk for violence (686). Also that APA believes that parental guidance will help reduce the exposure of violence (687). If parents can help reduce the problem then the rates of crime will slowly decreased.
One of the biggest problems of the violence in the media is that what the violence media means to actual kids is. It is hard to determine what type of violence to kid’s actual think it could be because it can be differed for every kid. Also some studies are known from Winick and Winick that kids from 6 to 10 are learning to deal with the media much as an adult do (687). Children still get confused is crime a fantasy, reality or just adverting they still do not know but violence is not always obvious to children.
The Issue Of Media Violence In The Modern Era
Media Violence has been a hot topic for many decades. Now it has become a problem because of the many technological advances. This can be an arguable debate between different people. Some argue that media violence has no harm but others disagree. The facts are stating that the television is turned on for more than eight hours per day and children spend two to four hours watching it. There are other media sources that most children have access to like movies, music, video games and internet. When children turn one years old they have already seen 200,000 acts of violence, including 40,000 murders. Most of our time is spend on media devices then other activities.
Media can have good affects one being fast and easy communication. Media Violence does affect us by making us more violent, more aggressive and teach us the wrong messages. It’s a proven fact that indeed media violence can make you more violent. Seeing violence on many of the products we use today makes us think that it is acceptable to use violence in real life. Through the click of a mouse you can get beheading videos, execution images, accident pictures, and gruesome scenes. That’s just form the internet, and there are still many types of media that are not listed. There are four types of violence that can be shown. Those four are unpunished violence, painless violence, happy violence and heroic violence.
Some may be better than others but all of them show violent acts. “We’ve heard it for years-a violent culture begets violence” (John-Hall 1) This question has been around for years but now it has become a problem because sources of media has dramatically went up. Violent media affects everyone, no matter what others think. There are people that do not agree that violent media causes violence in real life.
“Some people point out that violence is a fundamental part of human life, so media will necessarily contain it because media reflects reality.”(Nakaya 3) There is a lot of violence going on in the world, and the media just wants to paint a clear picture, for those that do not see what is going on around them. Reality should be shown but not in a way that people are disgusted and do not want their children around it. Reality should be put in a way that is appropriate for everyone. Aggression is also a problem connecting to media violence. Some parents complain that their children have become more aggressive after starting to play violent video games.
There is no way to prove that violent video games are the cause of that, but there are other evidences that show how violence media makes individuals more aggressive. “They contend that television and films can induce aggressive thoughts, provide models of violence to be imitated…”(Miller 2) This is not just someone’s opinion but its research done which shows that aggressive thoughts can come from violent media.
It is true that young people are playing violent video games that are not suitable for them. If parents can control and support their children, violent video games can be a way to decrease aggressive thoughts. “And parents are using video games as effective tools for raising their children.”(John-Hall 1) If parents can take responsibility for what their children play then the children can have fun and the parents can teach them something on the way.
It’s like putting a medicine in an ice cream. The kid likes it and the medicine gives its effect. Increasing violent acts are shown on the media that make some people believe that’s its ok to do those acts in the reality. For example a husband beating her wife in a movie can trigger a husband in the real life to do the same thing. People can learn different things from witnessing violent acts on media.
While some understand that media is a way of entertainment some do not and take in the wrong message. “All the major health organizations…have signed on to the position that media violence leads to real-world violence.” (Kevin W. Saunders, Pg.7) In the future this can be even a bigger problem because technology is ground by every hour. Soon, for some people media will be the only entertainment option. This will cause more violence in the real world. Others can disagree on this topic as well. Some say that violence in media can have two reasons. One of the reasons would be money. Many video games and movies make money because they include violence in their products.
They get big profits for just using some violence, they do not care how that violence is interpreted. Their purpose is for entertainment only. Some say that violence in media will show us what is going on in reality. “Some people out that violence is a fundamental part of human life, so media will necessarily contain it because media reflects reality.” (Henry Jenkins, pg.5)
Media is another source that will show people what is going on in reality. People that believe that violence is for the good, they think that when people watch violent acts, they will try to stop it in reality. This has been a hot topic for quite a bit. As technology grows this topic becomes even hotter. Going back two decades this problem wouldn’t have been as big as a problem then now. While some still think that showing violence would actually help, but it’s been researched that watching violence can cause aggressive behaviors which will eventually lead to violence. Violence in media has also dramatically grown over the past few years. There is no way to stop it now, but we have to learn how to control it and understand the right messages that its sending.
