At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, many hardships had to be overcome, causing great grief to most of the population. Faith was lost, patience was tried, and a blanket of oppression covered the people of Europe. As new inventions began to arise and facilitate the mass-producing of goods that supply the people of Europe, nearly everyone was forced to begin a new career within a factory.

The reverberations of these new inventions caused a dramatic plummet of the life expectancy of an average citizen to an alarming 15 years of age. Women and children are expected to work up to 16 hours a day and doing labor that could cause serious injury, like carrying extremely heavy loads. For their work, they are being paid ridiculous wages, women around 5 shillings per week, and children about 1. One can easily recognize the negative aspects of such a dramatic event. However, if one views the revolution as a whole, he will notice that the positive aspects completely out- weigh the negative aspects.

The revolution began as inventors introduced their creations to improve the way people were producing goods. Machines such as the cotton gin, water Ramee, power loom, and spinning jenny allow textile products to be produced in mass quantities. These techniques of mass-production make other methods such as cottage industry, where families produce by hand, obsolete. As a result of this, people are working in factories with these machines. Factories have become so dominant that eventually the cottage industry will no longer play a part in people’s lives. These factories have positive and negative aspects.

The work conditions are very dangerous and many have to work long hours. However, due to the mass production, many bobs are available, and the prices of goods are considerably decreasing because of the extreme availability. The job opportunities and price decrease definitely improve the lives of the people, giving them a chance to be a part of the society and be able to purchase products at a price that is not too bad. People have realized that there are solutions to some of the problems and hardships that they battle every day. Unions were formed 15 years ago in 1824. A union is an organized group of people working for a mutual cause.

Unions create laws and regulations that are making work less dangerous and rule, and more sanitary. Consecutive acts are also being formed; their purpose is to lessen the amount of hours that women and children can work in the factories. Safety and sanitary regulations have also begun to be enforced. Recently one act has really benefited the rules of labor for children; this is the Factory Act of 1833. This act states that children have to be over 9 years old to work in factories, and children 9-13 years old cannot work more than 9 hours, and children 13-18 years old cannot work more than 12 hours.

These are the positive outcomes that have derived from the industrial evolution and have affected the workers. Further more, people’s lives outside work have also changed. One very important aspect is that there are many more goods available because of the mass-production. Due to this mass-producing, the goods also dropped in price, which considerably benefits those who are financially struggling. Along with the mass-producing comes more employment opportunities, which allow some of the less fortunate people to have a chance of getting a job. The increase of new ideas and inventions are leading to an increase Of the quality of life.

Medicinal products are becoming more plentiful and transportation is improving. People are beginning to find themselves with more leisure time. Wages have increased and health benefits become available. These are just some of the many aspects of the revolution that benefit the people as a nation, which make them happier, and make the government safer from rebellion. As can be seen, some are struggling and sacrifices are being made, however at the same time people are gaining more benefits, and their lives are becoming better. Thus the hardships and the turmoil of today are increasing the benefits of the tomorrow.

“Being Old” Short Story

This review explores the impact of aging on our perception, considering its cognitive, physical, and social aspects. It also examines how older adults are treated in the United States and questions if this treatment truly appreciates their value. Furthermore, it investigates the potential positive and negative effects of societal messages on older individuals.

The physical manifestations of aging, including hair color, hair quantity, and wrinkles, play a role in defining old age. Nonetheless, there are additional less apparent physical transformations. Four categories of biological theories elucidate the physical aspects of aging. According to the wear-and-tear theory, the body gradually declines akin to a machine that eventually breaks down. This theory may also account for age-related ailments.

Next is the Cellular theory, which explains aging by focusing on processes that can lead to the buildup of harmful substances or the deterioration of cells over a lifetime. The third theory is the Metabolic theory, which focuses on aspects of the body’s metabolism to explain why people age. Caloric intake and stress are important factors for this theory. The fourth and final theory is the Programmed cell death, which suggests that aging is genetically programmed. Now that we have covered the fundamental physical attributes of being old, let’s explore the cognitive factors.

As people get older, their cognitive abilities, including reaction time, memory, and wisdom, decline. Research suggests that older adults generally experience a decrease in attention and reaction time, except for tasks involving a simple search and sufficient practice. Additionally, older adults perform worse than younger adults on tests measuring episodic memory – the ability to consciously recall information from a specific time or event.

Researchers have found that wisdom is not linked to age, despite the common belief in the intelligence of older people (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2007). In addition to examining physical and cognitive aspects of aging, we will now explore how social influences shape our perception of old age. The intriguing aspect about social factors related to “being old” is their connection to values such as importance, reverence, and ensuring the well-being of senior citizens.

Societies acknowledge the significance of investing in senior health care benefits, social security, and senior citizen facilities to support older individuals. Nevertheless, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that there are notable deficiencies in society’s treatment of the elderly. Well-planned, well-managed nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities with adequate staffing and knowledgeable professionals can provide considerable advantages for older adults and their families. Unfortunately, this is frequently not the scenario as nursing homes often turn into storage places for older adults who need more time and attention than their caregivers can deliver.

This is a critical situation for elderly adults as it worsens in these facilities. Without regular monitoring and reporting by local officials and loved ones, the elderly are vulnerable to neglect and different types of abuse – physical, sexual, and emotional. To illustrate this, my own experience with my grandfather comes to mind. He had been admitted to a rehabilitation facility after suffering from a stroke. During his stay, he lost his ability to communicate verbally; however, after a few weeks, my family observed that he would exhibit aggression towards the staff whenever they entered his room.

Through research and unexpected visits, it was discovered that my grandfather had been neglected and left in his bodily fluids all day, leading to the formation of sores. The staff’s excuse for this neglect was that they hadn’t gotten around to addressing it. This discovery sparked a thorough investigation, which uncovered additional individuals who were also enduring similar mistreatment. This incident highlights the fact that even those who live independently can be susceptible to financial exploitation. An example of this occurred in San Francisco, California when six gang members confined an 84-year old woman in her apartment and utilized it as a location for drug trafficking.

According to the district attorney, elderly abuse is a highly significant concern for law enforcement nowadays (Doyle, 2005). These examples merely reflect society’s general sentiments towards older individuals. Upon evaluation, it is evident that these actions do not align with a society that appreciates, honors, and prioritizes the well-being of the elderly. Such mistreatment can only result in adverse consequences and convey negative messages to older individuals. Consequently, people strive excessively to maintain their youthfulness and vitality using any means necessary.

People are engaging in various methods, ranging from exercise and vitamin intake to resorting to surgery and receiving Botox injections, in order to retain their youthful appearance. Our society has conveyed a notion that youthfulness holds the key to happiness, while implying that as one ages, they become frail and vulnerable. Within this analysis, I have delved into the cognitive, physical, and social aspects that collectively form our society’s conception of “old age”. Additionally, I have examined the treatment of older adults and explored whether this treatment reflects a societal worth placed upon them in the United States. Lastly, I have evaluated how these messages, whether positive or negative, influence older individuals.

I can honestly say that the notion of “you can show me better than you can tell me” applies to both how older people are treated and the thoughts and feelings of society towards them. The only question that remains is how one wants to be treated when they become old, as getting old is inevitable.

Hansen had a point. Gal’s CEO could do every job in the yard better than the best employees on his payroll. He was also right about GAS”s Position of the market leadership. He thought employee empowerment is going to be a tough sell with Hansen. After all strip away the bombast and what the CEO is saying: why fix what isn’t broken? ” Put yourself in Luke Aurora’s place, you are the new quality director and you want to convince your new boss with the benefits of employees’ empowerment. How to convince Mark Hansen to change his mind?

First of all will talk about management definition: to do things through people. May be the CEO can do every job better than his staff because they are not satisfied and do their jobs with very low performance as they are not feeling part of the organization and not participating in the decisions affecting their jobs. Will try to convince the CEO that not to rely on this as it is not good sign. GIS position in the market as number one may be entitled because there are no competitors or it is the only one company produces this product in this area.

Employees not involved and empowered will feel insecure and not satisfied which will reflect on customer satisfaction and employees turn over will increase. Empowering employees will result in energize them to work hard and do it right leading to reduce cost. As per Helen Keller famous saying goes: alone we can do so little ;together can do so much so Collaboration and sharing knowledge tends to be high in organizations have employees empowerment culture. Retention and organization citizenship is a function of employees’ empowerment.

GIS is one man show model and can’t survive if there is any expansion in the business. Also any emergency or situation of CEO absence from the firm will result in threat that the business will lose direction as the system is depend on one person and he is not there. As example Toyota now is number three in automobile market as a result of its philosophy in believing that every employee should to take ownership in the company by identifying quality defects and improve efficiency.
