There are several events that redefined the future of the United States from 1400 to 1865. One of them was the Civil War that took place during the early 1860s. Many scholars acknowledge that this upheaval was catalyzed by the burning issue of slavery. The war was between the Confederate States of America and the United States. During the period, it was evident that eleven Southern states had already withdrawn from the United States of America union in order to engage in slavery. The Civil War remains an important historical moment since it led to the establishment of a united country and promoted new laws and frameworks. Such regulations continue to support the welfare of every American citizen today. This paper discusses, evaluates, and analyzes the implications of this turning point.

The Civil War: A Significant Moment in U.S. History

I believe that the American Civil War was a defining moment in the history of the United States. This is true since it changed the way many citizens envisioned their country (Hummel, 2013). After the end of the conflict, the United States of America was now seen as an indivisible nation. The problem of autonomous states that wanted to be recognized was addressed. Consequently, the United States was created as a sovereign state governed by appropriate laws and regulations (Important from Montgomery, 1861). Many historians also acknowledge that the event catalyzed the establishment of new values that would define the country for many years.

The passage of several constitutional amendments after this upheaval made the United States stronger than ever before. For instance, the XIII, XIV, and XV bills were passed to ensure that all states were combined to form a single state that focused on the rights of all people. Murphy (2015) argues that such amendments led to the abolishment of slavery, equal protection, and provision of voting rights. From this analysis, it is evident that the selected turning point created the best environment for nurturing democracy and strengthening the United States. If it were not for this war, chances are high that the country would have disintegrated even further. This kind of disunity could have given rise to several independent or autonomous states.

Causes and Events

The main trigger of the Civil War was the desire of southern states to retain their autonomy and engage in the illegal trade of slavery. However, several events and causes are known to have catalyzed this war. The first one was the end of the infamous Mexican War. This occurrence led to the passage of the Compromise of 1850 by Congress. This meant that California was now a free state. The second issue was the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 (Hummel, 2013). This law empowered and guided abolitionists to address the problem of slavery. A book titled Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet B. Stowe was published in 1852. This text persuaded many northerners to view slavery negatively.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 encouraged the territories of Nebraska and Kansas to decide if they wanted to engage in slavery or not. Violence broke out in Kansas due to this issue. During the same period, Preston Brooks attacked Charles Sumner on the floor of the Senate due to the critical issue of slavery. In 1857, the Lecompton Constitution was passed with the aim of allowing the territory of Kansas to embrace the idea of slavery (Reid, 2014). Voters in the region rejected the document in order to ensure that Kansas remained a free territory.

In 1859, James Brown (a radical abolitionist) was hanged for starting an uprising that focused on the issue of slavery. His trial and death are referenced by many historians as one of the movements that set the stage for the infamous warfare. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected to become the country’s president. Following his win, South Carolina and the other six territories (states) decided to withdraw from the Union (Civil War, 1861). As the new president, Lincoln declared that slavery would not be extended to new states that had become part of the Union. A new rebellion emerged in the south as more territories seceded to establish the Confederate States of America. The president and his supporters marched southwards to suppress this uprising. Such an initiative would also result in the Civil War.

Changing the Course of History

Doyle (2017) acknowledges that the Civil War changed the course of American history forever. The first outstanding transformation was that the conflict led to the passage and ratification of the 13 amendments or bills. Such laws were cited to abolish slavery forever. Although many African Americans continued to suffer at the hands of their superiors or landowners, the war created the best environment for promoting civil liberties. The infamous Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was fuelled by this historic conflict. The end of slavery in the 1860s made it easier for many citizens to pursue their economic and social goals.

The bloody conflict taught every American citizen that fighting was an inappropriate method for solving national challenges. This was the case since over 600,000 people died during the war. Consequently, future challenges and problems in the country would be addressed using evidence-based measures. Another change that reshaped the future of the country was the establishment of a powerful federal government (Sexton, 2017). This move compelled different states to remain part of the Union. The constitution became a significant document that supported the rights of all American citizens. The establishment of the United States as sovereignty was the ultimate price.

Sexton (2017) goes further to indicate that the Civil War was the beginning of a new journey that would eventually bring equal rights and opportunities to many African Americans in the country. Although this goal was not achieved within a short time, the upheaval transformed race relations in the state. It also made it easier for all people to pursue their economic, educational, and career objectives.

Impact on Today’s Society

The Civil War can be described as a major event in the history of the United States that continues to impact the lives of many American citizens today. The idea of racial equality is something that defines America’s modern social and economic issues. This is a debate that has been embraced by citizens for many decades. Most of the liberties and rights empowering many minority groups borrow a lot from the ideologies pursued during the Civil War period (Doyle, 2017). Many minority groups such as lesbians, women, and gays use similar concepts and arguments to fight for their rights. This means that the future of every American society will be dictated by the ideals of this upheaval.

Another impact of this turning point is that it made the United States an industrial nation. Many people appreciate various goods and services produced from different sectors of the economy. Before the Civil War, a number of states in the South mainly focused on agricultural products such as cotton. However, the upheaval opened up such regions to the wave of industrialization (Doyle, 2017). Consequently, the country’s economy grew and diversified within a short period. Consequently, different sectors emerged and thrived, thereby making the country politically stable and improving the lifestyles of many citizens.

The formation of a federal government made it easier for resources to be shared proportionately. Appropriate laws that could support the welfare of every American citizen were also passed. Such achievements continue to dictate or influence the lives of many people in the country. It is also evident that the United States has remained a strong country for many years after the Civil War. This kind of unity made it easier for this state to emerge victorious during the Great War and the Second World War (Sexton, 2017). From this analysis, it is evident that the infamous Civil War is a major event that has impacted every aspect of today’s American society.


The above discussion has indicated that the Civil War is a significant moment in the history of the United States. The reason for this argument is that it led to the establishment of a country composed of like-minded states. The event also encouraged many leaders to abolish slavery. Consequently, it catalyzed numerous changes such as the enactment of new amendments that continue to protect the rights and liberties of many American citizens. This war also promoted positive race relations, economic performance, and desirable living conditions in the United States.

The True Meaning Of Integrity


Abstract thinking skills enable people to define and operate ideas and objects that do not exist physically, and they play a significant role in culture and value systems. Being an abstract noun, the word “integrity” is widely used in different contexts (including professional ones) to define a set of positive qualities that a person is expected to demonstrate to deserve trust and make good decisions. In this essay, I define integrity as the ability to remain consistent, sincere, and adhere to one’s principles in any situation.

Main body

All words are interconnected, and the knowledge of the etymology of the chosen concept can become a good starting point in shaping its definition. The word “integrity” was used in Old French and Latin to express “soundness, purity, and blamelessness” (Kang). The Latin word “integer” (an adjective) can be literally translated as “untouched”, and the concept under consideration reflects this meaning in a certain way (Kang). The origin of the word points at its relation to such concepts as wholeness and, to some extent, atomicity.

Integrity can be used to define the state in which a person is able to apply his or her system of values that is well-established in order to solve different tasks and make decisions in case of moral dilemmas. In this connection, integrity is related to the use of one and the same principles in different decision-making processes or being consistent. Just like many modern researchers, I believe that the development of integrity belongs to the key processes in psychosocial maturation (Goldman and Goodboy 72). The opinion on the connection between integrity and consistency follows from my personal experience. When I was a school student, my classmates and I were supposed to prepare a project together, and I was expected to fulfill the role of a team leader and evaluate each member’s work. My best friend who was in my team failed to perform his tasks properly, and it was the moment when I needed to choose between consistency (evaluate all people’s work using the same criteria) and partiality.

Apart from consistency, integrity involves independence from external factors and the ability to reduce the impact of personal interests on decision-making. A person who possesses integrity tends to rely on certain moral principles or beliefs when making decisions instead of choosing the most advantageous alternatives. In this connection, excessive flexibility and opportunism fully illustrate the absence of integrity. The readiness to squander opportunities to stay honest deserves respect, and I know a lot of people who live in accordance with the above-mentioned principle. For instance, one of my friends who lives outside of the United States works as a school teacher, and she can receive bonus payments if many of her students get high marks during classes that she gives. Despite that, she makes no attempts to simplify tasks or remain blind to minor mistakes when evaluating her students’ works. To me, her willingness to stay disinterested acts as a great example of integrity.

There is one important thing about my definition that I would like to clarify. To me, the fact that a person strictly follows all service instructions and does not perform morally inappropriate actions is not a sign of true integrity. An individual who possesses integrity does not do the right things due to the fear of punishment or the desire to be in line with public opinions. Instead, true integrity comes from self-honesty and encourages people to make appropriate decisions even when there is nobody to judge them if they violate their principles.


To sum it up, integrity presents a widely used concept that can be explained in different ways. In my opinion, integrity is opposite to partiality and opportunism since it encourages people to reject advantageous offers and miss helpful opportunities in order to stay loyal to themselves. Also, true integrity is not just about making the right things, it involves an understanding of why certain actions are right or wrong.

The Role Of Time Management In Leadership


Modern leaders pay much attention to time management as it is one of the constant and irreversible things in the work of any organization. Once it is wasted, it can never be returned or used again. Therefore, the task of any leader is to make sure that time is properly and thoughtfully used by employees and themselves. The results of the Time Management Assessment show that I am, like most people, in the middle of my time management success. I am able to understand my needs to manage time. Still, there is always someplace for improvement. In this paper, recently learned concepts would be evaluated to identify which leadership theory best describes my style and skills, compare leadership and management qualities, and recognize how to this knowledge to the work environment.

Time Management and Learned Concepts

Among a variety of responsibilities, leaders have to understand that time management is a crucial step to be taken. It is a priority that cannot be ignored in professional nursing organizations. Leaders have to give work back to people, communicate with stakeholders, embrace change, and manage risks (Hornstein, 2015). The list of practices is long indeed. The information obtained from self-assessment proves that time management is not only a necessity to develop plans and organize people and tasks every day. People have to learn how to communicate, cooperate, and share their visions with each other. Therefore, general management that includes time management, personal skills, critical thinking, and strategic planning are perfectly interlinked with leadership demonstrated by healthcare professionals, nurses, and other stakeholders (Pihlainen, Kivinen, & Lammintakanen, 2016). It is expected that individual management competencies and leadership qualities have to be integrated through special styles and theories.

Leadership Theory

Today, there are many leadership theories and styles that people can choose regarding their background knowledge, skills, and abilities. Some leaders find it necessary to support and motivate employees, proving that servant leadership theories can still be effective in the modern work environment. Many professional healthcare organizations work under authoritarian leadership when leaders introduce policies and goals without the evident participation of employees. Finally, some leaders prefer to follow transactional or transformational styles and establish trustful and partnership relationships with employees. Leadership theories focus on understanding common working processes that are characterized by certain time spans and hierarchical levels (Dinh et al., 2014). I believe that, regarding my current success and achievements, trait theory developed and improved by Stogdill, Mann, Kirkpatrick, and Locke at different periods of time best describe my style of work (Ghasabeh, Soosay, & Reaiche, 2015). Its main assumption is that people are born with a number of inherited traits that can be partially suited to the chosen leadership style in case they are properly developed and combined.

Trait theory is focused on the promotion of such traits as an adaptation to different situations, cooperation, ambitions, self-confidence, and a high level of responsibilities. Leaders should learn how to develop various skills, including creativity, persuasion, sociability, and diplomacy, to become successful. This theory helps to understand what qualities of mine should be developed or even removed. At the same time, this theory inspires me, showing my progress and potential.

Leadership and Management Comparison

To continue my professional development as a leader, I should also understand the existing differences and similarities between leadership and management. Both healthcare leaders and managers must develop competencies and skills that are required for the organization of tasks and work in hospitals or other clinical settings (Pihlainen et al., 2016). However, the main distinctive feature between these two concepts is that leaders usually have people who are ready and eager to follow them, and managers only have people who can work for them. It is not enough for me to have a team for work. My goal is to work with people who will be ready to follow me one day and share my ideas.

Application to the Work Environment

Not many people understand how leadership theories and time management knowledge can be applied to the work environment. There are many different situations and personal qualities that promote a possibility to develop a variety of scenarios and outcomes. However, it is the strength of any leadership theory and management strategy – to create common templates and follow mutual steps to achieve the required goals and success. This week’s concepts, including theories, time management assessment, and professional nursing organizations as the main setting, can improve the work in the chosen environment by creating effective guides and recommendations for new workers, as well as experienced professionals.


To conclude, it is necessary to say that leadership qualities and management strategies have to be investigated by all students and nurses who want to become good leaders with time. Though it is not always possible to find followers and share personal visions and values, it is not the reason to stop trying and improving the already gained level of knowledge. Nursing leaders and managers have access to different theories and frameworks. Specially developed assessment tools can be used to identify which practices are the best for particular situations and settings. This week’s project helps to realize that my current time management skills are appropriate to become a good leader over time.
