“Who Moved My Cheese?” By Spencer Johnson Essay Example


Who Moved My Cheese? was written by Spencer Johnson, an American author of bestsellers that are popular all over the world. It is a book about a group of former classmates that gathered for a reunion, and one of them wanted to tell a story about two mice named “Sniff” and “Scurry”, and two small characters that were very similar to people named “Haw” and “Hem” that found their “Cheese” in a maze that represented happiness.

However, things started to get complicated once it was gone, and two of them were able to accept the change right away and moved on, one needed time to deal with his thoughts, and the last one was in a denial. It ends with a discussion of this tale by people of different occupations, but most of them had a similar opinion about this story, and all of them agreed that it can be life-changing.



There are major principles in this book that should be noted, and one of them teaches that a person should look at the situation from other perspectives sometimes, and should understand when it is necessary to get ready for the inevitable (Johnson, n.d., p. 16).

Also, it may not be easy to let go of something that one is used to, but it should be understood that it is necessary, and time is very precious (Johnson, n.d., p. 18). The last one and the most important principle indicates that it is easier to make a transition once one knows about his or her goals, and it is possible to achieve them (Johnson, n.d., p. 20).


It is not that easy to admit, but I have to say that my personality at the moment is quite similar to the one demonstrated by Hem. It is a challenge for me to accept any changes, and I meet them with resistance. For example, I did not want to go to school in the past, and it is not surprising because it is quite hard to learn about the necessity to go somewhere each day after one has enjoyed years of complete freedom.

Also, I should have seen the need for changes that would improve my relationships but I was satisfied with what I had and did not even consider making attempts to affect some situations. However, it should be said that most people in the modern society are like this, and the ones who have learned how to face such challenges can quickly adapt to any environment. This story actually made me think about opportunities that I might have missed in the past.

Change in Approach

Now I understand that time should not be wasted on things that are not productive whatsoever if one wants to achieve success in this life. If I have an idea that it would be paramount for me to do something, I will do it and I will no longer be afraid of change that may come afterwards because it is not as scary in reality as one may imagine in his or her head. I agree that my current approach to such situations is not very wise, and I must not think too much.

It is necessary to understand the correct time to take an action that would determine the future of an individual. Also, I plan to be much more active and not just follow somebody. My perception of the education also needs to change, and I should pay attention to every bit of knowledge that is provided. Also, I like how mice have foreseen that such situation would occur, and I have to say that sometimes it is not easy and hugely depends on the experience with such circumstances.

I have learned that just accepting your fate and doing nothing is simply not wise and most likely will lead to nothing. It is necessary to understand that some changes may actually be for the worst, but it is not as bad as it seems because we learn from our mistakes. There is no better learning experience than a questionable decision, and it is important for one to be able to laugh at his or her missteps.

Also, many do not want to have any responsibilities, and just thoughts about them cause some to tremble and be terrified. Indeed, it is quite challenging to force someone to do something that he or she does not want to do. I liked the way one of the main characters has come to a conclusion that people need to accept the changes themselves, and there is no way someone would be able to do it for them.


It is imperative to understand why both characters were resisting the change. One of the issues is that both of them had significant assumptions that prevented them from making any progress (Kegan & Lahey, 2001, p. 88). It is important that the first aspect of overcoming this issue is observation, and it is what Haw did, and he was able to proceed to action (Kegan & Lahey, 2001, p. 88). The second human-like character did not even try to consider this as a problem that needs to be solved.

It is indeed hard to do because comfort is something that is cherished by many, and most do not want to step out of their comfort zones. One may be satisfied with the way things are right now, but it cannot last forever. We have to face changes in every aspect of our lives. Resistance is not a great idea in most cases and only extends the time that is spent on non-productive activities, but one must understand when something is inevitable. It may also be explained from the physiological perspective.

The biggest barrier that should be addressed is the way our brain functions. Its primary purpose is to guarantee the safety of an individual, and it becomes problematic if one considers a change to be dangerous because complex-thinking is negatively affected as a result (Pawliw-Fry, 2009, p. 7).

A human mind is very complex, and it is rather hard for anyone to do something once one idea has been set in stone. It happens because everyone strives for safety, and some activities are intentionally avoided if one thinks that changes would be dangerous in one way or another.

Favourite Quote

Johnson (n.d.) is able to grab attention of all the readers with a line that said “Haw did not know it, but he was running behind because he was weighted down by his beliefs” (p. 15). In other words, the little human was not ready to accept changes because he was genuinely afraid very did in his mind, and could not understand it. This is my favorite quote because it displays the power of thoughts and how negative ones can affect the actions of an individual.

One of the most important aspects that should be noted is that one should not doubt his or her strength once the decision to accept and face changes has been made. It is understandable that one wants to feel safe during the process and to have an ability to go back if something unexpected happens.

However, the decisiveness is one of the most paramount personal qualities among successful individuals, and it is important to strive to be like this. Overall, it was very entertaining and motivational, and I want to improve myself so I can be a better individual, and I hope that I will be more like Haw.


In conclusion, this story is not as simple as it may seem at first, and one may need to read it few times to fully comprehend because there are some small details that are hard to notice during the first read. It can be said that this story has helped me to understand the issue that currently affects millions of people all over the world.

It is hard to imagine how many talented people did not chase their dreams simply because they were afraid. Motivation is crucial when someone attempts to change his or her life, and it is hard to do when one does not have a complete understanding of the benefits that are provided. Overall, this was an excellent learning experience for me, and I hope that I would be able to utilize the principles that were listed in this book.

Recording Observations In Field Research


There is a close relation between field research and qualitative research. However, the observations made while conducting field studies may either be presented as quantitative or qualitative data or both. The data recorded by field investigators are highly dependent on whether it is qualitative or quantitative.

Qualitative observation

This is detailed data recorded in a field study at a particular time. Qualitative observations may also be referred to as field notes. The precision and nature of these notes vary considerably depending on the type of studies conducted. There are six important elements that must be incorporated into field notes (Monette, Sullivan, & Jong, 2010). These include:

  1. Running description: – this is merely recorded information concerning the variables that form the basis of a study. It does not include analyzed information.
  2. Accounts of episodes that came prior: – these are sets of information that might have been forgotten before by the investigators in previous investigations. I remembered while in the field, researchers are compelled to note them down.
  3. Analytical ideas: – these are unprecedented occurrences experienced during a study. They may include speculations and important observations. Investigators have to note them down as a reminder during data analysis.
  4. Personal feelings: – these are investigators’ own sentiments concerning their study. This information has to be noted down as a measure to shun bias-instigated results. The impressions are important because they are presented according to the perspective of researchers.
  5. Notes intended to provide more information: – since the recorded data may not be comprehensive, researchers are normally compelled to write down their own details concerning specific things like forecasted observations or those that need more attention.
  6. Methodological notes: – this is information that concerns the techniques, procedures, and methods applied in the actual data collection and observation. It is important that these procedures are noted down as a way of reminding the researchers on the actual methods and techniques used to obtain specific information.

Researchers have to carry with them note pads whenever they leave for the fields with the aim of obtaining data. It is only through this that the investigators are able to make note of certain observations when they come across them in the fields. That notwithstanding, researchers have to know what to record as data too (Monette, Sullivan, & Jong, 2010).

Quantitative observation

This is always specified and clarified information obtained during field researches. The data in quantitative observation is coded or characterized into a specific number of classes or groups. This is normally done on coding sheets. The coding sheets are merely forms that are used to assist in the categorization and grouping of variables as a way of facilitating analysis. Since the coding sheets are used to categorize variables of a given study as it occurs, different studies are bound to use completely different coding sheets (Monette, Sullivan, & Jong, 2010).

It is important to note that coding groups are derived from hypotheses under investigation. Some hypotheses may have variables that seem quantifiable. However, a substantial level of subjective interpretation is incorporated such observations in a bid to come up with the most viable observations. For instance, however, many hypotheses may seem quantifiable, coders are bound to make rational decisions of whether a given reaction is negative or positive. Additionally, the investigators must verify whether the reactions obtained during a study are a sign of antagonism or solidarity. In conclusion, therefore, quantitative observations are difficult to obtain but give comprehensive scrutiny of a given study (Monette, Sullivan, & Jong, 2010).

Disney World Company Interests


Corporate social responsibility is becoming increasingly important in the modern society where companies are under pressure to give back to the society. According to Soule (2010), companies get all they need from the society in terms of customers, employees, security, and research services among others. It is only fair if they engage in activities that are focused on appreciating the benefits given by the society. In this proposal, the researcher has identified Disney World as the company interest that will be used in the research. The researcher will analyze stakeholder’s role in the company when it comes to promoting corporate social responsibility.

Synopsis of the Company

Disney world, officially known as Walt Disney Company, is the world’s largest entertainment complex. Walt Disney World traces its history to Disneyland, the parent company, which was founded in 1955. The construction of Walt Disney Land, which started in 1965, was meant to expand the services offered at Disney World. The complex was finally completed in 1971. It is important to note that Walt Disney, the founder of this company, died before this project was completed. The figure below is the current official logo for Disney World

According to Bouzarth, Harris, and Hutson (2014), Disney World is one of the most visited theme parks in the world. In 2013 alone, it received more than 16 million visitors from all over the world. It is estimated that since its inception, the park has received over 650 million local and international visitors. Contrary to the popular belief that the Park is popular among children, the truth is that Walt Disney World is designed to entertain both adults and children. Although most of the visitors who visit the park come with their entire families, a good number of people visit this park as individuals without being accompanied by children.

The company employs over 65,000 people directly within the park, with many more working as contractors or independent business persons benefiting from the large population that always visit the park on a regular basis. The location of the park is very strategic. It is connected to other parts of the world with airports, roads and railways. The park sits on a 27,258 acres land which houses over 37 resort hotels. Currently, George Kalogridis is the president and chief executive officer of the firm.

Rationale and Reason for Selecting the Company

Walt Disney World is one of the biggest brands in the world in the entertainment sector. A number of factors influenced the decision to select this company for the study. The first reason was the fact that a study by Amita (2009) found out that many entertainment parks across the world were avoiding corporate social responsibility claiming that their activities were not as harmful to the environment as manufacturing and transportation firms. This is one big fallacy that should be avoided by any corporate body that seeks to achieve success in the modern business environment. Every single firm has the moral authority to engage in corporate social responsibility as long as it is a for-profit organization.

As mentioned above, Disney World receives an average of 16 million visitors every year. These visitors use various products wrapped in plastic papers which do not easily decompose. That is a threat to the environment that this company should be responsible. The 16 million visitors and tens of thousands of employees working for this firm come from the society. The benefit they give to this firm is worth appreciating by engaging in corporate social responsibility.

Disney World is a community within a community. Although the directors abandoned the original idea of the founder of creating a future city within the park, some aspects of this idea can be seen in this park. This was another reason why this park was chosen. The management of this firm can easily claim that its responsibility is to the community within the park. However, it is worth noting that the internal community within the park heavily relies on the external community in Florida and the entire United States of America. According to Foglesong (2002), the management has been doing a lot to ensure that the internal community is operating optimally. This is done by keeping the compound clean, planting trees, and developing unique appearance to please all the visitors. However, it is important for the firm to go beyond its own community to the society that supports it in its operations.

Stakeholder Role in the Company

For the last ten years, I have been one of the most loyal customers’ this firm has ever had. I spend most of my holidays in this park alongside my family members. Sometimes I would visit its resorts over the weekends without other members of my family. I may not be in the managerial position at the firm, but I have been making regular feedbacks about the services offered at the firm and the improvements I would prefer to see in the future. I have received ten mails from the management appreciating my regular feedbacks about the services offered by the firm. This means that my opinion counts and that the firm is willing to take them into consideration. As a loyal customer, I intend to use my influence to encourage this firm to engage in corporate social responsibilities.

As customers of this firm, we are part of the internal stakeholders who directly contribute to the success of this firm. We must find a way of making this firm responsible to the society. Other important internal stakeholders are the top managers. They must appreciate that it is their role to come up with plans on how the firm should engage on corporate social responsibilities based on the advice from employees and customers. Junior employees at the firm should collectively encourage the management to engage in social responsibilities within Florida and many other states in the country. They should also be willing and ready to participate in these activities when they come up. The government should also collaborate with this firm in such activities.


Walt Disney World remains one of the most popular destinations for people looking for entertainment parks in the global society. The firm has recorded impressive growth over the last few decades and it is only fair if it increases the rate at which it is engaged in corporate social responsibility. The management of the firm should not view this as a financial burden but rather as a perfect opportunity to advertise its brand and products to the regional and global market in a very unique way.
